  • Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is bordered by Canada to the north and the United States to the south.
It is also the third-largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, after Lake Victoria in Africa and Lake Huron-Michigan in North America.

Lake Superior has the largest surface area of any freshwater lake, but Lake Baikal in Russia has a larger water volume.

I grew up in Sault Ste Marie Ontario. Superior is extremely clean and yes quite cold. Many beaches are very shallow and tolerable for swimming. You can literally walk out until you barely see the beach. Lots of sandbars and drop offs, but all of a sudden you could find yourself in trouble with current and undertow close to the shipping lanes. I don't believe that it has the largest surface area of the Great Lakes but is the deepest and has the most volume of water. I could be mistaken.

First the narrator says that Lake Superior is the largest lake of the Great Lakes and then says it's the third largest freshwater lake in the world after Lake Victoria and Lake Huron. In reality, Lake Superior at 82,100 square km is the largest Freshwater lake in the world with Victoria being second at 59,947 square km and Huron slightly smaller at 59,590 square km. Since lake Huron and lake Michigan are at the same level with just a strait connecting the two, Huron Michigan are really just two arms of the same lake, this is technically the largest lake in the world being 117,000 square km.

Actually, a tragic history with copper. A huge strip of the eastern side of the Keweenaw Peninsula is covered with mining waste. It's visible via satellite. Was dumped into Lake Superior for decades and storms gradually spread it down the beach. Looks like a moonscape, heartbreaking.
