Dude, she has an *amazing* voice. Her mother did too, but she was a soprano. She hit those high notes like nobody's business, but her general singing style is quite high and breathy. I personally prefer a lower register and Maya's more soulful alto (contralto?) voice. The fact that she can sing that well and be funny at the same time, to me, is quite impressive!

I just found out by this very video title, that Minnie Riperton was her mom.
I'm sure she's probably tired of people asking her that question. You can just listen to her speaking voice and know she has a lower pitch voice than her mother had.
whistle register has nothing to do with ones voice type or range! Anyone vocal type with any range can have a whistle register! Whistle notes are still to this day not understood entirely. Some can hit them due to nodules like mariah and minnie and some can hit them due to vocal frying and pushing out air and some can hit them by extending their headvoice until it flips into the whistle register! The last one is the msot healthy one and to me personally the most powerful one and more pleasing one in general. I know people who cant even sing with horrible crackeling low deep vocies that can hit vocal fry ish whistles and i know people who have really really high voices who cant hit whistles so its not range or vocal type related in most cases! Hitting whistle notes by extending the headvoice is the only type that does correlate to vocal type and range but all the other methods of hitting the whistles are not! Im a guy tenor and i use my headvocie to hit whistles up to G#6-A6. But i can also go really low up to E2....... So you see with singing its ot always that cut and dry. My voice is rather light but when i go lower it actually sounds very deep and when i start belting or mixing i can sound like a woman belting jsut like the whisltes will sound like a womans.
mage13011988 thats right, whistle register can only be taught to women by extending their range to the max, but man can only use it due to natural low vocal fry and cracking and thats where that comes from, because betty wright has a low voice but its rapsy and cracky
I have to both agree and disagree. Yes, some singers can access whistle notes due to having had vocal trauma like Mariah and possibly also Morisette Amon. The vocal folds as a consequence can’t come together properly and air is pushed through a tiny opening that is left, creating a whistle pipe like sound. This is a process which is very unhealthy for the vocal folds. To correct you about Minnie Riperton being able to reach whistle notes because she would have injured her vocal folds and gotten nodules, I can’t find anything supporting that claim on the web. It's a common missconception unfortunately that singers like Minnie Riperton and Deniece Williams (once her backup singer) are using some whistle note configuration when singing in the sixth octave, but both those singers actually are singing in full voice/mixed voice. Minnie Riperton had an incredibly high full voice range that she sadly is often not recognised for, but she is more often mentioned in the same instances as Mariah as if they sing in the same kind of configuration, which they aren't. and you will hear Minnie reaching first a F#6 in her full voice, which she is able to bring down to her chest register with no vocal break and then she sings an incredible A6 shortly after, also bringing down that note to chest. This only proves that she could sing her whistle notes in her full voice. She probably sang some in a super head voice configuration too, but these two as Illustrated are unmistakingly in her mixed voice. She deserves to be recognised for the stellar and effortless sounding range that she had.

I think if Minnie was still living, she would've trained her to hit high notes. In a documentary, it said that even Minnie studied with an opera teacher and developed her range at a young age. So just simply saying "I can't" is a cop out. Yes, we are all born with certain characteristics and traits. However, some of them are expressed at an early age and others may be expressed later in life depending on their own individual environmental factors and life experiences.
She’s not saying she can’t hit the whistle register but that she can’t sing like her mom which is true because she can’t. No one can.
You are wrong, that's a misconception. Everyone has different voice types, natural voice types are different. And that's not how it works. Some children of singers sing too. I know of children of amazing singers who do not sing at all and others who have very different genres and voice stylings.
