Applying modern political discourse terms to the cavemen jockeying for power is such a great gag.

For those wondering why there is an abundance of pokes at Mary Whitehouse, and had never poked too much into the history of the original run, she was a rather large thorn in the side of cast and crew during the 70s particularly when Tom Baker was Doctor, and because at the time a lot of the stories were much more darker in tone than had previously been tackled on the show. I wonder what she would have thought of the 90s Batman the Animated Series...

lol I'd like to have seen her reaction to s1 of space 1999. It made Doctor who look tame.

@@neptune04 Space 1999 wasn't meant originally for kids and families. Sure it had a family friendly producer attached, but it's like saying Skeksis hang out with Fraggles. one was made for a vastly different age range than the other.

I didn't know that honestly. Okay let me use a different example there is an old American cartoon called Inhumanoids that didn't last long due to low toy sales. It featured zombies, People dying in acid (while screaming it was eating his flesh) and coming back as zombie monsters, monsters from underground, and other monsters that were cannibalistic (which we saw on screen). She really would have lost it if she had seen that show.@@tipulsar85

It's a dang shame we're losing the awesome opening sequence from these reviews, but if it means the return of the actual reviews, so B it.

True enough, but I would love to see the opening updated since for better or for worse there are 15+ doctors.

An Unearthly Child is a REALLY strong start to the show. Love the incredibly gothic atmosphere and I took a shine to Ian and Barbara right away because they clearly care about Susan and her wellbeing and... rightly so seeing as the Doctor was a bit of a bastard to begin with. Shame that it was post poned due to some guy in Dallas getting his mind blown. It was the 60s, man.
    Edit: Hehe... Nice Whitehouse joke

Not-so-fun fact: The first episode aired the day after JFK was assassinated.

For historical accuracy I'd be more inclined to look up "The Life and Death of a Neanderthal" by Stefan Milo, but I do like this firdt story for other reasons. 😊
The show's first three stories slowly flesh out the Doctor and why he's so villainous. He would later change his tune to the companions in later episodes. Definitely is a different start to a show, but not bad.
The Doctor would still loathe numerous visits to Earth in the classic era, regardless. But he did warm to humans.

A lot of thoughtful comments. Although a big sci-fi fan I never got into Doctor Who. I was aware of it and watched a few episodes here and there, mostly of the McCoy and Baker era. I always found it a bit campy, I know that's half the fun for people but it just never connected with me. I do watch content about Doctor Who because the inception of the show and its lore is really interesting.

Ah. Having devoted nearly three decades of his life to Star Trek, Chuck now turns to the male half of the hieros gamos. The keeper of the Vestibule of Eternity.

I know you wrote this analysis a good thirteen years ago, so I'm extra impressed how well your commentary fits so well with the Doctor's time in the Division. This Doctor may not remember that period of his life, but he still carries a ruthlessly pragmatic instinct, in line with what we see from the Fugitive, yet Ian can talk him out of it -- for his entire history to follow! -- because he can no longer justify that instinct on thinking about it.

I always felt Ian and Barbara's reaction to the TARDIS interior was the most realistic. Despite standing inside and seeing for themselves, they adamantly refuse to believe any of this is real. Nearly all the other companions would be shocked for a few minutes, but quickly accepted what was going on. The flat denial is much more interesting.

That opening line from the start of the review has more poetry and life in it than anything I've seen of the more recent Doctor Who.
Heck, it's better than most of what Hollywood has put out in the past 20 years.
