  • Scottish Premier League match, 21st October 1989. It's the Davie Cooper show...Tom Boyd hits the opener, but Michael O'Neill draws United level. Motherwell are reduced to 10 men early in the second half, when John Philliben sees red, but a touch of Cooper magic wins his side a penalty, which he duly converts. O'Neill scores his second soon after, but Cooper plays in Dougie Arnott, who ensures the Steelmen have the final say.

I could greet watching that. What a player Coop was. His reaction to the crowd when he won the pen is priceless.

That reverse pass from Coop to play in Dougie for the winner is one of my favourite memories of the great man.

Remember this game well. My favourite moment was Coops winning the penalty. Amazing skill.

Genius Davie 11 Cooper On Wing every time got ball knew were going see magic Always said wouldve liked seen Davie Cooper play as Central Midfielder .If had good ball winner ,grafter to do dirty work & feed Cooper ball wouldve opened up even great AC Milan defence with every type pass Terrify opponents if ran them had perfect vision when & were put ball no doubt wouldve picked corner ,netted few special goals .Scotland's Diego Maradona as happens left footed also.Souness admitted let Davie Cooper leave too early wee Tommy McLean pulled off master stroke signing Cooper & also Bobby Russell who doesn't get credit deserves Ibrox & Firpark Today both be worth millions

Tommy McLean played Cooper as a central midfielder, with Tom Boyd providing the 'legs' for him. Having seen what Cooper could do as a central mid, I think you're right. He may be a Rangers legend as a winger, but they may have actually been wasting his ability playing him there.
