What Is Cystic Fibrosis?

- This video presents information about cystic fibrosis (CF), which is an autosomal recessive disorder. The video outlines the basic biological principles behind CF, along with an overview of the disease and available treatment options. The video begins by mentioning the genetic mutation to the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulatory (CFTR) gene on chromosome 7 which is the main cause of CF. Subsequently, the video entails the symptoms of the disease, including increased perspiration, pancreatic insufficiencies and lung infections. The epidemiology of this disease is also mentioned as the video states that 1 in 3600 children born in Canada is affected by CF. Furthermore, a significant portion of the video explains the organs affected by the disease and any treatment options that patients have. It is thoroughly explained that CF affects multiple organs including the lungs, pancreas and intestines. Many of these complications are due to blockages caused by the buildup of mucus. For instance, blockages caused in the intestines due to mucus buildup creates inefficiencies in digestion, specifically for fats and proteins. Considering there are multiple body parts affected by CF, there is a wide range of treatment options available to alleviate the condition of the disease. A majority of the treatment options serve the function of removing buildups of mucus and the blockages that occur. A patient with CF will most likely experience lung infections which are often treated with different types of antibiotics based on the severity of the disease and type of bacteria that is present. Other medications, most notably, bronchodilators, are also considered as treatment options for this disease. Lastly, there are also physical treatments such as Chest Physical Therapy (CPT) which also attempt to clear mucus using physical techniques. Overall, our video attempts to explain the basic processes that cause CF, subsequently followed by its overall impact on the patient’s body and the treatments that are available.

im 14 years old and i have cystic fibrosis, it depends on luck and what medicines you are doing correctly and incorrectly on whether you are healthy or not. i myself have just came out of hospital two days ago because of my illness. compared to other people with CF i am very healthy even though i just came out of hospital. i know people who are the same age as me and who do the same medicines and medicines as me but he is very very unhealthy and is constantly going to hospital. so it literally depends on luck in my opinion.

I have it too. I had a double lung and liver transplant which has kind of cured me. I had jt when j was 21 and I'm 34 now. Best if luck with everything. Its hard I know.

CF is devastating. I had a teacher who had it to a less severe degree. He chose to not have children.
It is amazing how parents will not undergo any form of screening before considering whether they will have children or not. Worse yet there are parents who have one child with severe CF and wantonly have more children with little regard.
Not every parent thinks they need screening. Mine for an example. I have CF but there is no history in our family line of anyone having it. I’m the first. So they (understandably) did not get tested for CF genes.
It’s also worth mentioning that genetic testing is very very expensive and if your insurance company doesn’t think you need it (no history for example) then they won’t pay for it.

I have cf and my doctor said I need a lung transplant soon my lungs are getting worse i just got out of the hospital I was there for a week I’m on home ivy antibiotics and my breathing test was at 35 when I got hospitalized and now there better I don’t want a lunge transplant I’m scared

From what I know about nutrition. The person's with this disease must come away from prepackaged foods, eat grass fed & free range meats. And fresh organic produce. I discovered Africa has the best food's for nutrient value because they aren't dominated by Roundup or Monsato.

Yup. My brother had CF, asthma, stage 3 kidney failure, and type 1 diabetes. He weighed 90lbs as a 22 y/o. He passed in 2013.
I have cystic fibrosis and I have a lot of stomach issues. I take Enzymes to help me when I eat so I don’t have a upset stomach.

I do. Found out really late though. It wasn’t diagnosed till I was 30. I have a milder case but still got it.
Ended up in the hospital in 2018 for 8 days with pneumonia and a partially collapsed lung. They investigated why a (seemingly) perfectly healthy 28 year old came down with double pneumonia. Low and behold, CF!

@DemystifyingMedicineMcMaster As a 57 year old Cystic Fibrosis patient, may I ask you to please correct some of the things that are stated in this video. Although it seems to be a pretty informative video, at 4:57 you state that malnutrition "becomes a cause of the disease". This is NOT true. Malnutrition may occur as a result of the disease, but DOES NOT cause the disease in any way, shape or form. This is misleading and people hearing this may feel that by preventing malnutrition, they can prevent cystic fibrosis. NOT TRUE! Around 5:19 the video also states that "by implementing these techniques we can hope to continue lessening the incidence of this disease". Since there is no cure for the disease as of yet, when you say "these techniques" - you are referring to the treatments listed in the video that may help lessen the problems brought on by having cystic fibrosis. NOTHING in this video speaks to "lessening the incidence of this disease". Again, your information is misleading and wrong to say that anything presented in this video will "continue lessening the incidence of the disease". This is a cruel, autosomal recessive genetic disease and absolutely nothing you presented in this video has ANYTHING TO DO with LESSENING THE INCIDENCE OF THIS DISEASE. The things that are presented here can only attempt to make the horrible effects of this disease a bit easier to live with until we are able to find a cure - which hopefully is right around the corner! But until then, please, please - correct the mistakes in this video in order to correctly teach the viewers about Cystic Fibrosis. Thank you.

Every individual case is different in the severity of the disease. I wasn’t diagnosed till I was 30 and they gave me 20 more years for my current life expectancy.
It also depends on if you do just happen to get a really bad infection of some kind in your lungs as well as how much you follow your therapies, exercise, meds, etc.

I have it, when I was a baby I almost died because I couldnt breathe and also my sister died and she also had cystic fibrosis and she used to live in a poor country called Honduras and she died when she was 4 because she was sick and she couldn't breath and in that country the hospitals dont do anything they just give you a list of medicine that you have to buy and my family couldnt afford the medicine and she ended up dying
