I run my 2011 grandsport in competitive mode mostly and you can have fun. I never turn it all off, ive had it save me from having a mustang moment on concrete intersections.
Good job explaining the different modes. Same on my 2013 GS w a LS3. We all want to have fun and push it hard but no one wants to end up in a ditch. I would always turn it all off w only 436 hp and 325's on the rear. Will try the competitive mode.
The Selection knob that you don't have, that you refer to as mode selector is for magnetic ride suspension. The selector lets you select the ride quality and performance of the suspension only. The knob is only offered on units that came with the mag ride option. Be glad you don’t have it because it is crazy $$ to repair/replace when needed and it is difficult to delete which involves ECU programing. I also have a 2006 Z06. 2006 is the lightest year of them all and the active handling is the most non-intrusive of all the years. The LS7 really comes alive with cam and headers. I make 544whp on a Mustang dyno and even with T/C on this car scares the hell out of me whenever you stomp on the gas.

Yeah I definitely didn’t use the correct terminology, I was referring to the Performance Traction Management system that was introduced in the ZR1 and was available in the later model years of Z06. PTM (as you probably already know) had 5 modes of its own: Off, Wet, Dry, Sport, Sport 2, and Race. The Road&Track channel has a really good video comparing those modes using a ZR1 if you want to check it out. And when I was searching for a Z I definitely was looking for one without the magride, I’ve heard the stories of the $$$ to fix stuff. Your car sounds like a beast though! Right now mines bone stock, but headers are on my list of mods for 2022. -Mike
I have owned a c5 automatic and now own a manual c6. You can really tell the difference in modes on the automatic. However in the c6 manual the differences are harder to tell, maybe if i would push it harder i could but my vette takes curves and sticks to pavement like its on rails...im just not willing to push it to any limits i may regret.
New comment but after seeing this I tried it on my c6 with traction off then competitive and gotta say it can get scary if you are not careful and help skid the car back straight but it was fun and never doing that again unless it’s a big open area 😂😅
Nice video, would be even better with a standing outside camera to see how the car behave from outside...would be easier to see the body movement of the car.
I am certain you can’t fully disable the stability management (yaw control) above a certain speed. I used to drive with all aids off (hold button for 5 seconds) in the rain on track and I lost the rear end at 140 on a slight bend on track and it caught it and stopped it from spinning.
Also happened to me. Was in 2nd running a trackhawk doing 60 then yaw control kicked in and made me change lanes damn near lol. i drive a 06 z06 and both active handling and TC was off

I don't have anything at all like what you have to practice your rubber shredding near me. About once a month there's an impromptu Ferrari & Lamborghini early morning race on a 1.5 mile long street two blocks from my house at 2:30am. Maybe I'll try something then. Be a big noiz, hang with the big boiz. Or perhaps just the parking lot of my local grocery store @ 3:30am. There's too many off duty police that live in my community to try anything in the daytime.

I have a cammed (+other mods) C6Z06 and have to say that even with traction control on, it is pretty wild in both first and second gear on the road, to the point I have wondered if TC actually does anything😊 I track the car as well occasionally on Hoosier R7's, so as you have identified, less accentuated with good grip, particularly on a high average speed circuit.
Yours sounds fast! I think TC back in the mid 2000’s was more lenient than it is now haha. New cars would never let you get this much wheelspin. Are you able to get good heat into the R7’s on track? I’ve heard mixed reviews on those for the C6.

I have done quite a bit of racing on both slicks and DOT's though so am well used to the heat build up routine and how to get them in the window. On the road its the roll on in 2nd gear that catches me out sometimes re TC. Asphalt surfaces = drift time every time. Other surfaces its a lottery😀
There's 'Launch Control' in my 2013. I think it's in Competitive mode, but I don't remember, been a while... Just have the wheel pointed straight, clutch fully depressed, mat the throttle and the engine goes to 4K rpm and stays there. Side step the clutch, the ECM will get the car to 60 asap by managing the amount of slippage. If I'm understanding this function correctly... I've played with it a bit but never dumped the clutch. Too abusive for my tastes...
My Cobalt SS limits when turning and sometimes it's really annoying. Right now we have a lot of snow and I usually drive with with tc off but sc on because the limit to the wheels sometimes bogs me down too much. I was going to say too I have that same steering wheel and a lot of people didn't like that they used it in both cars. I can kind of see that but it's also a really nice steering wheel lol :).
Yeah that’s the frame rate of the camera lining up with the frame rate of the display. In real life it doesn’t flash at all. Lesson learned while filming. Won’t happen again.
I just purchased a 05 and it has the control switch that you said wasn't an option until later. I have been trying to find info on it. I can't tell if it works or not. When I switch it there is zero said or any indicator saying what mode it is in?
I have recently had an issue with my stability control after putting a new set of wheels on. It will basically bring the car to a complete stop after a slide if you leave everything on. It didn’t do this with my old set of wheels. Anyone have any suggestions?
Correct, but it’s acts differently. With TC/ESC on, the car uses the brakes to reduce yaw. In practice, this means that if the car is sliding and you’re trying to brake at the same time, the ABS system gets overwhelmed and can’t apply the ideal full braking force. With everything off, the car doesn’t use the brakes and so allows you to brake hardest no matter what, with ABS still happening after a wheel locks. On track (or auto x) it just feels like you can’t brake as hard with the TC/ESC turned on.
Hey Adam thanks for the question. I did not consider the transmission as a factor when I was buying. I think the updated trans from 08+ can hold more power, but that was not important for me as I am not adding power. As for the feel, I really like how mine feels. It’s got a good “click” as it goes into gear and the gates are easy to find (both on the road and on the track). 5th can be tricky to find sometimes because the reverse lockout doesn’t prevent the shifter from moving to the right, only up. But 5th is also the least used gear so I don’t really care. All in all I would say don’t limit yourself based on transmission. The only things I think are important are the trim level (and that’s just so you get the better Bose speakers) and if you want MagRide or not. Hope this helps!
Adam, I prefer the T56 over the TR6060. The TR6060 is only rated 50ftlbs of torque more than the T56 but there are alot more aftermarket support for the T56 since that trans was in everything during it's hayday. I'm sending my T56 to a company that does full rebuild upgrades and it will be good for over 600ftlbs of torque. I'm running about 500ftlbs right now but plan on doing 150 shot of N2 down the road.
During this video I was on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S! I really like them for street use, although I since switched to Pilot Sport Cup 2’s with the track driving I’ve been doing.
There’s a product for that (that I now run)! They’re kinda hard to get but it’s called a TrackBox. Made by LG Motorsports. Turns everything off including TPMS.
I don’t doubt it! As soon as they developed the newer age of PTM (released w/ ZR1, and available in later model Z06’s) the average joe as well as good drivers where able to get so much more out of their cars. Road and Track made a GREAT video on this gen of PTM in a C6, in their video “How it Works: PTM in action” Unfortunately I have the older gen PTM, and only have the 3-4 modes in this video. They don’t do a great job of actually making you faster, and really just prevent a spin.

I have a 2010 Grand Sport and it stays in everything on mode. I'm 69 and I don't have the reflexes of a younger man these days lol.

Will competition mode still affect the slide of the car if your drifting around corners? As in how much slip do you need for it to step in.
any C6 ZO6 needs its heads rebuilt ,they are notorious for dropping valves

I have done this. It does not tolerate the grip levels well haha. It is much happier turned fully off.

I don’t know if it’s part of a tune I have on my Zo6 but I get “drag mode activated” when I downshift a certain way.
