  • Dawn Hughes, the psychologist hired by Amber Heard's legal team in her defamation trial against her ex-husband Johnny Depp, faced tough questions from Depp's attorney during cross-examination. Hughes was challenged on her methods of testing and asked about using a number of tests with different parameters than how they were designed. Hughes defended her actions and said there is some leeway to use these tests in different ways.

      It worries me how she presented her credentials to the jury + admits to not fill out the tests completely and reasons out that it was 'redundant' to answer the tests since it's all indicated in the 88-page report + defensively replies to the attorney.. all in one sitting..
      It's similar to saying "No need to fill out all of the questions in the test even though the instruction says so.. since I have the info in my super-comprehensive-88-page-report full of words that most people do not understand and abbreviations that most people haven't heard of"..
      ..not everyone has the patience to read an 88-page report, not everyone understand what the heck it means.. geezuz 🤔🤔

      And when you hear her say what boards and committees and w/e she's on it clicks as to _why_ .... because, regardless of what she is saying, such behaviour smacks of someone who is past their prime, sees scant, if any, direct clinical scenarios (I have no issues thinking that when she says she does "clinic hours" that she is, in fact, just auditing students or new clinicians, and claiming it under her hours as that's what happens in other medical specialities so I assume it happens in psych), someone who no longer "has the time" to keep up to date with the literature and progress in the field and who, because she is a big cheese, thinks that stuff is all beneath her. If you cannot admit your mistakes, and you instead fall back on tests and measures that are out of date by 30+ years, and you trying to aggressively browbeat not only the cross examination but the _jury_ with your confusing word salad, thinking it makes you sound impressive and believable?? Well.... let's just say I don't have my money on such incompetence, and I hope her colleagues and any superiors she has left are seeing this for what it is: someone who didn't know what they were doing, didn't read the notes, and thinks they can bluff their way thru the most intensively scrutinised civil suit this side of the year 2010.

    As I have mentioned in previous posts of mine, I am a retired psychotherapist who has administered countless psychological instruments over the years I was actively working. I had conducted psychological evaluations of many patients that were both in my care and in the care of my colleagues. The cross-examination of Hughes, PhD. was very accurate in that she didn't follow proper procedure in reviewing all test results prior to developing a concrete diagnosis. Only the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) can stand alone in developing a medical diagnosis and not the other psychological instruments that she claims to have used at the time she gave her first diagnosis. This was pre-mature on her part and clearly indicates to me that she had a preconceived opinion that went well beyond just a hypothesis that needed to be tested. She was making an actual diagnosis without the completion of all of the psychological instruments. Therefore, in my opinion, she had an agenda that was beyond medical science in deriving her findings which is unprofessional on many levels. Apparently, in my opinion, she gave the opinion that she was paid to render, rather than the opinion that the psychological instruments and her professional interviewing and assessment of Amber Heard led her to determine. I would appreciate any other mental health professionals providing their opinions on my post here and on the testimony that doctor Hughes provided.

      Hello! I have a few genuine questions about the practice in relation to the video. If a patient presents themselves as possibly having PTSD in relation to IPV, but that IPV happened over a year ago, how much can that skew the results of the CAPS-V? It seems to me that the CAPS-V, in relation to asking how often a specific event happened in the prior year, is acting as less of a diagnostic instrument than it is a gauge of the extent of the IPV that occurred in the recent past. Is the CAPS-V as a whole meant to measure the estimated severity of the patient’s trauma-related symptoms at the time of administration? I wish these questions would have been asked in examination because if that is the case and were explained more thoroughly, it would have highlighted how important the other instruments’ results are when considering the results of the CAPS-V, and especially to the jury who I imagine have a very limited range of knowledge in terms of the nuances of psychiatry. I’d imagine that it could be acceptable to have a patient answer the same questions in relation to the time frame of when the IPV was occurring, but that it should definitely not be considered in the analysis of the CAPS-V’s results.

    • @essolunapapa
      @essolunapapa Před 2 lety +12

      @@askmeaboutsugma You posed some well-thought-out and intelligent questions, Dylan, and I will try my best to answer them. Let me first say that I am not an expert in assessing the domestic violence of adults, but I am an expert in assessing the abuse of children and adolescents. You are correct, that the CAPS-V provides the therapist with a strong indication of the onset of the trauma, the past and current effects of the trauma on the patient, and provides the therapist with a diagnostic tool for diagnosing the patient with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) if it does, in fact, apply to that patient. So, with this in mind, if the patient truly did suffer trauma (anything considered outside the normal expected life experience) the CAPS-V would be able to evaluate the effects of that trauma on the patient regardless if the trauma occurred last week, last year or 20 years earlier. True trauma stays with a person throughout their lifetime. The more severe the trauma, the greater the effects it can have on the individual depending on the individuals coping mechanisms. I hope this helps to answer your questions Dylan.

Other diagnostic tools can be used to determine other issues or needs of the patient, for example, a Three-phase Bender Gestalt test to determine thought delays and or cognitive impairment of the patient. There are hundreds of mental health tools available to a mental health professional in assessing a patient. The MMPI is the only accurate tool that is accepted worldwide that provides the clinician with the insight to make a medical diagnosis for problems addressed in the DSM for personality disorders.

    Her statement that smoking is an example of static risk factor is flawed. In this case, risk is calculated by number of cigarette packs smoked per day. Therefore this risk factor may increase or decrease over time as an individual smokes more, less, or quits. This is not a static number, in fact it's highly variable dependent upon frequency of use.
    It is logical to assume the CAPS-5 researchers had specific, evidence-based reasons to include frequency as a required field in this exam.
    Frequency typically correlates to severity of risk. Including this data point collects a clearer clinical picture and support for analysis. Furthermore, she left the dates of events blank. Forcing someone to list the dates keeps them accountable to 1) report the true number of incidents and 2) gives credence to document each event for a more accurate representation of behavior.
    Particularity in IPV with only a 1- sided story, in a high profile case, all data and documentation is vital to support your diagnostic statements. Dr H, with her extensive expertise in this field and experiences in court, should absolutely already know this standard of practice. "Document or it didn't happen!".
    It appears she choose to comment on something outside her typical scope of practice, erroneously stated smoking is a static risk factor, to validate her poor documentation practice. Additionally, the arrogant and condescending tone used while explaining this example highlights her ability to sound intelligent, like she knows what she's talking about, when she is in fact wrong.
    Again, without supporting documentation, she sounds like she's grasping at straws to keep her assessments valid. From my perspective, she has lost all credibility as an expert. I cannot trust any of her previous professional opinions or statements moving forward.

    She also fully named every test she did the first time, then when saying which ones have the methods for detecting lying, she abbreviated the names so you couldn't tell what's what anymore.
    She also completely mis-represented how the previous tests accounted for lying which I found incredibly interesting so I paid a lot of attention to and noticed how incredibly badly she tried to misrepresent how it showed that.

    The bottom line is she performed these tests in a way that was incredibly easy to manipulate. I convinced my counselor I needed ADHD meds as a 13 year old cause I wanted them for the wrong reasons. The test he gave me was to click a computer screen each time I noticed a dot move on the screen. So I easily realized someone with ADHD would get distracted. So halfway through the test I pretended to get distracted briefly by the bookshelf in the corner rather than click the screen. After the test I asked what he thought. He said "I have no doubt you have adhd". I do not have ADHD, this was confirmed a year later when I got a different counselor and was ready to stop bullshitting. Point being, a good psychologist runs tests that cant be easily manipulated that see past manipulation attempts and a psychologists bias. A bad one pretends nobody would ever manipulate a test cause that makes your job a lot easier. This Psychologist was played like a fiddle. Shes worthless to her patients and certainly treats based on her preconceived notions instead of using tested standardized tools. And again she does that because it's easy pretending you know best so you are infallible. If she had any sense she would recant and do a serious inventory of all her defects of character so she can keep them from effecting her paitents, work and future diagnosis.

      Damn that’s pretty insane they just gave you a diagnosis with only one test administered. You would think that someone who went to school for psych would be more observant lol. In my experience its pretty easy to get a bad psychologist. I had a similar situation where a psychologist said I have ADHD because I was taken there as a angsty teenager and I didn’t want to answer their questions. I looked around the room and gave the shortest answers I could. Not being rude or anything just not letting this completely stranger know my entire life story in the first hour of meeting them. For some reason they thought this was so outside the scope of reactions they said I must have severe ADHD. I swear that because ADHD was such a popular diagnosis at the time, that it was probably easier just to pin us with a diagnosis than to actually test for what’s happening with their patients.

    Not only did Dawn Hughes use the danger assessment checklist in the wrong setting (created by ER nurses for victims in that setting ) , SHE FILLED IT OUT , HERSELF!! On top of that , she didn’t fill it out in a standardized form needed for the forensic evaluation by other experts who will be testifying , as well as the court/jurors.

All of the people testifying for her will be lucky to still have a job and/or any clients remaining after all of their blatant perjuring of themselves. Hope she was worth it people! Anyone who would go to her for a true dx is nuts. As someone who suffers from PTSD on multiple levels, I find her fake dx to be absurd. I can name off a list of reasons why Amber doesn't have PTSD by her actions she's spoke on in this trial. Now if ya want to be labeled with a dx of your choosing, then for the right price, this "clinician" will gladly label you with your chosen dx. Sad. This is sad

      As someone who doesn't have PTSD I can't say I know what it's like to experience. I'm curious what did you think when this Dr basically said people with ptsd aren't incapacitated and they still go to work etc? From my my little knowledge on this I feel if you had PTSD to the degree Amber claims then you would be pretty incapacitated.

    • @Lexielouwho
      @Lexielouwho Před 2 lety +2

      @@rachaelbeaver780 thanks for posing the question. I went back and relistened to her comment at 1:21:30 to 1:23:10 and I have to agree with her. Now I don't remember how Dr. Curry worded that to say whether she is wrong or not so I won't comment on that unless I can find it and review it. My experience is PTSD differs depending on the severity and the complexity of the situation. For instance, a person can be traumatized by being bitten by a dog and they'll have extreme reactions anytime a dog is anywhere near them or possibly even just mentioned. This scenario would not necessarily render them incapable of working as it has nothing to do with the cause of the trauma. Now, if a person were in a building that a gunman came in and shot up, thereby killing numerous people, then that person would very likely have trauma that would be triggered by being in doors, by just the smell of gun powder, by a firework exploding, by a random person who might look like the perp. See why I said it depends on severity and complexity. I don't feel safe making this personal so I haven't listed what events caused my trauma but I will say I was dx by a major hospital and I took countless tests and hours of interviews to come to my dx. I was able to work without incident because my areas of PTSD had nothing to do with my chosen profession. However I will say that someone with PTSD is also likely to be dx with GAD or some other form of anxiety and this will make them highly anxious and their fight of flight mode constantly on edge which does effect even working even though it's not associated with the traumatic event. I'm trying to answer you in as rounded as I can without writing a book, lol. I personally don't see any anxiety in Amber. Nobody with PTSD from DV or IPV as they are now coining the term, would ever:
      1. Gift their abuser a large knife and engrave it with the saying she did
      2. Provoke them as she's admitted to under oath.
      3. Taunt them by laughing and saying "tell them Johnny, tell them, I as a man am a victim of abuse, see who believes you!"
      4. Belittles them by emasculating them as she did calling on his manhood.
      5. Laughs to their face when they slap you across the face, not once, not twice but three times unless they are asking for a beating
      6. And this one really goes to the PTSD. No one who claims they are so fearful, barracades themselves in a room our of fear of their perp and then renders themselves unable to fight back should he barge in by taking sleeping pills. NO ONE.... I know this first hand. I don't sleep and I've been medicated all to hell with strong prescription drugs to try to sleep and my perpetrators don't live with me, don't have access to me, aren't on the other side of a bathroom or bedroom door like she claims. It's been over a decade and I still can't relax enough to sleep like a normal person because I'm always listening for any ques. So no, I do not believe a damn word out of her mouth. And I don't believe any clinician after listening to these tapes would ever believe she truly suffers PTSD or IPV as her own testimony is not congruent to her actions. She's doing a huge disservice to true victims and that angers me. She weaponized a movement for her benefit to exact revenge on her victim. And that sets the movement back as well. So there's my thoughts. I hope they help answer your questions.
      6.

I don't believe Heard has this but I do believe that she has been the cause of many people having been in her company over her lifetime that could be diagnosed with that. She is a disgrace to other abused victims. In audio that was recorded of her taunting Mr. Depp is all the proof the jury needs. PTSD victims don't keep mouthing on trying to incite violence.

      I have BPD and PTSD and I am BEYOND offended!
      The amount of people I see slamming actual people with BPD because of this fake is absurd. BPD is literally trauma responses learned after dealing with abuse and narsassisric behavior. The BPD "rage" episodes are our way of protecting ourselves the only way we know how. Very rarely will an individual with BPD ever hurt anyone other then themselves. We might yell and verbally defend ourselves but it's always after a trigger is hit and we feel threatened. I'm not excusing verbal abuse, because at times depending on the type and person with BPD it definitely can be abusive.
      To see her claiming PTSD is another issue entirely. Not being able to leave your house, being afraid of men, being afraid of even going to work...it's not easy and it's not okay. I struggle daily with having to work around men. Any time a man moves too quickly or talks too loudly I completely break down. This isn't something to be glorified. I literally work as a caregiver because there are too many people in every other profession and I can't handle that. I was working fast food for over 10 years before the events that gave me PTSD occurred. Now I have a hard time even sitting down to eat in a restaurant. I have to be careful on the clients I take because I break down when aggressive men are around me.
      If she had eaither of these things she would NOT be acting like this. She couldn't. The only diagnosis I believe in that she got is narsassisric personality disorder. All she's doing is making people like me, who are desperately trying to claw our way out of our trauma to build something better look abusive. I hate it here
