I LOVED My Building Apprenticeship with BCITO // New Zealand

- I had worked in the hospitality sector since I was 16. After doing a stint as a roofing laborer while traveling through North America I fell in love with construction. Upon arrival back to New Zealand, I signed up for a building apprenticeship as a 24-year-old and never looked back.
I worked under an old school builder and we did everything ourselves, from digging foundations to installing the roofs. This gave me a wide range of experience and exposure.
I have since moved on from being a hands-on builder to running the business side of things, but this apprenticeship has given me a good grounding, and life long skills.
Too many people are going out and getting university degrees and I would definitely recommend the trades if you're considering this.
I studied on the job with BCITO

Hey Josh. Really enjoying watching. Seeing your vids makes me see similarities as i also took on building apprenticeship later in life. Fully relate to that sense of satisfaction at seeing a finished job. Also plenty of random small tasks teachs us as builders to roll with faults in design or methodology. Great to see you doing this from roots up.
That is awesome, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment Captain :)

Great to hear your thoughts Josh, currently considering a carpentry apprenticeship at 27. After gaining some experience fencing and working at a boat building company this feels like a great path. Let's dig some holes!!

Im 95 percent done with bcito apprentaship... Anybody have any tips about the professional standards unit standard and what needs tp be uploaded. Little bit stuck on what it means.
Hey Josh awesome video. How is your carpentry knowledge if your doing a building app.
Building = Carpentry :)
Hey Josh, great videos I've watched a few now. I'm really interested to know what your experience was like on site in terms of learning to take charge and forming a level of confidence of certain roles to get them signed off in your apprenticeship. I've been an apprentice for 4 years now and just spent 300+ hours building my first home by myself which has been a major learning curve for me but the point in sharing that is to say I'm not green at all. However I'm only 29% signed off after 4 years. My main issue is I'm not getting opertunities onsite to do a lot of the jobs I need in order to prove I can do them myself for Bcito. What was this side of the apprenticeship like for you? And were you given those opportunities, or was there another way to sign modules off in terms of practical competency.
Cheers 😊
Hey Dan, where abouts in NZ are you based? In my experience with BCITO it did all come together at the end really quickly, and unfortunately there's lots of units that you can't get signed off until you've had the experience
I know some apprentices go and do a slab or a retaining wall with another crew to get particular units signed off.
When I was going through it I made it really clear to my boss and Training Co-oridinator that I wanted to be proactive about getting signed off, keep asking and pushing to get those units sorted and it will come together :)
im 29 and looking to get an apprenticeship. not sure if building or carpenter. ive been a chef all my life really. i did roofing labourer for a little bit .and painting but painting is boring as f haha. and easy
offer to work for a builder to get some work experience, its definitely rewarding being part of the entire build process start to finish
Nice
Thanks :)
Is it possible to full time work and become an apprentice or maybe pay rent and be an apprentice
Hey are you based in NZ? Best people to chat to about apprenticeships would be BCITO

Hey Thanks for reaching out Quinn, awesome that you want to be a builder! A few people have asked the same question so I am planing a video on this topic soon, Keep watching and sub if you haven't already :)
Hey Quinn check out my most recent video about apprenticeships :) czcams.com/video/2dAN6zbOxOc/video.html
@@nzbuilder thanks for your videos mate, 17 now just got an apprenticeship starting next week
how did u cope with working + study?
Hey E, great question, my trick was to pick a regular night of the week to do book work, I think it was Tuesdays. Every Tuesday I would sit down, open the books and do a little bit, sometimes it was only 15mins, other times it was a couple of hours, but it was regular, and this meant that I was always chipping away at it 👍🏻
Mean mahi josh looking at doing building we’ll see what happens... lol
Cheers, check out my other apprenticeship video here czcams.com/video/2dAN6zbOxOc/video.html
Go for it mate! I wish I'd started mine years ago :)
