  • I just purchased a brand new 2023 KTM 890 Adventure R. Why? Because the Yamaha World Raid is an EU product only. Because the Honda Transalp doesn't come with knobbies. Because 105 HP. Because cruise control. Because I like throwing away my money.
    On the 890:
    Vanesche Side Stand Dongle
    Vanesche GPS Mount
    PerunMoto Billet Rack - small
    Rottweiler Performance Can Delete
Some cheap ass Chinese levers (just... no)
    Doubletake Mirrors
    Mosko Moto Nomad Tank Bag

"If the 890R was as reliable as a Honda, everyone would be riding one". Truer words were never spoken! Great review. Keep us updated, please, as things progress. I have 1,000 miles on my 23, no issues yet, though I worry about the bike stranding me if I take a big trip with it. But like you correctly stated, no other ADV bike has the features or performance to match this. The Aprilia might be closest, but the dealer network issue is very real. Keep up the good reviews, we appreciate it.

No issues on my 890R so far either except for a leaking front tyre (wheel sealing, valve or tyre bead). I had a warning flash about fuel level sensor, that was fixed with a software update at 1000Km service and semed to change how the range are presented as well compared to friends 890R's that had not been on service yet. I did not have any problems with the 790R either before i traded it in for the 890. As said, keep it up and congrats to a very nice bike to ADV on. Cheers guys 🍺

@@Braapncamp I wonder if it’s an issue with where or when they were assembled then? I’ve had lemon vehicles before that I had to just cut my losses after the car (BMW) was in the shop every other week for a new issue every single time. But the fact that he said If you have one issue with these bikes, you should immediately take it back and get your money back or get another one, makes me want to steer completely clear of any KTM with electronics. I guess I just like the simplicity of the T7, even though that comes at the expense of the performance of one of these monsters! I’ve ridden my buddy’s 890 Rally, and it’s an absolute savage. I’m glad you haven’t had any issues, and hopefully never do. Keep it pinned brother!

I wanted a small light weight ADV bike to ride in my 60's. So I bought a KTM 390 in Dec. The throttle would just go to idle while riding. Sometimes 20 times in 10 miles. KTM replaced the bike. The new bike did the same. In the end, it was a bad throttle position sensor. It took me 3 months to get a working bike, but I am so happy I stuck it out. The 390, despite critics, is an unbelievably capable bike both on and off road. I am leaving in a week to ride the NMBDR with a friend. Stick it out, John, it'll be worth the effort.
But, come on KTM, get your quality under control. Maybe you need to fire some people and hire a Japanese Six Sigma expert! Seriously!

No jumps or fast single track is in the plans for it, just forest roads, mnt passes and highways. It handles the baby heads and ledges really well in stock suspension form and I don’t ever worry about its reliability. The ‘Whew!’ at the end of the video when it started was classic.

I’m looking into getting into biking. Never had a motorcycle before. With all your experience, would you recommend a drz 400 as my first bike? Looking for something bombproof to explore north Idaho’s backcountry forest roads on. I hear the drz 400 gets good reviews for off-road and dependability as a first bike to own.
I will add the Ktm 690r and 890 look like a fun bike to play around on. I was looking at the Ktm 690r but have recently turned away from that idea given I’ve never owned a bike before and don’t want to spend that kind of money until I get more experience

I also hope KTM gets things sorted out. All the reviews I have watched have claimed that the KTMs are incredible when they are running properly. Last year I researched mid-sized ADVs to decide on what to purchase in the spring of 2023. I went back and forth between the Tiger 900, the KTMs and the Yamaha Tenere 700. In the end I made my decision based on the two most important factors to me: Reliability and large dealer network/parts availability. I bought a 2023 Tenere 700. I can understand why you went with the KTM. When running properly it is unmatched.

I'm currently deciding whether to go back to Beemers or an Africa Twin now we are moving to Scotland. so no more trail riding hence my 300 rally going. However, I did find multiple wires in various places pinched. The entire bike runs through a CAN Bus communication protocol system, which is quite sophisticated, and makes me nervous if I ever have to troubleshoot it. I looked into buying a scanner, but they are ridiculously expensive. I do plan on trading mine in for a 2024 890 R model next year, assuming they get all the bugs worked out by then. My 22 ktm 500 is endless fun, and now that you have an 890, you already appreciate their engineer's capacity to make bikes fun, it keeps surprising me. Like you, even with a $600 seat upgrade on my 500, it can be tough on longer road stretches. In the end, it's how much dirt vs how much pavement, bottom line. Since I'm in the dirt a lot, the 500 can't be beat, it's near perfect for my skill level. My buddy who's ridden his whole life is dumping his T7 and ktm 350 for a 500 after riding mine while we're out. He does long stretches including the continental divide. This is by far the best bike I ever owned. Keep making vids about what is happening with you bike, document everything and force KTM to make it good on those 15k you gave them. See it as an opportunity to learn and create good content for your viewers. Once sorted this bike will serve you well.
KTM seems to have a bit of a quality control issue. Mine is perfect for now (500 miles in) and my buddies who bought maybe 10 KTMs in the last 10 years only had one with a bunch of problems, all the others have been very reliable. Seems you're playing a bit of a gamble everytime you buy a KTM. Not very reassuring, but if this can help, my buddy who bought all those KTM now loves his latest who had all the problems. It took a while to sort out everything, but he got through it and the bike is now as reliable as all his others.

I have recently thought about the plain Adventure as an option and Ian from BRM bought one for extensive testing and just released his first ride report today. It will be fascinating to see how he goes over the months. I was a KTM avoider until 2019when I bought a 500 to convert into an adventure bike but like you, dislike it’s road prowess and bought a 690.
For me, age is the No 1 factor so weight has become the main obstacle and the 690/701 is now my weight limit. Here in Australia you can get an electronic cruise control for it so with a modified seat and screen it’s half a thing on the road. Keep up the reporting as your style is pretty unique and very relatable. One other thing, the fact that Nomad sent that tank to you indicates your standing as the world’s pre eminent 450L owner.

Kudos on your vid and review. Spot on. I upgraded from a 2020 790 Adventure to a 2023 890R. I had the Tech pack and heated grips installed. Love the suspension and handling improvements over the 790. Only glitch is that I'm getting more mileage out of my Motoz Adventure tires than my clutches. 11565 miles since February with at least 50% of that dirt. Just installed my 4th clutch pack while on the WABDR. I've checked the oil jet and drive shaft check valve and seem to be getting good oil flow. (790/890 clutches are a wet/dry clutch that rely on oil from a jet wetting them rather than sitting in an oil bath. I bleed orange. I'm using the clutch the same as my other 4 KTMs. I went with the Recluse Radius X (manual clutch) hoping to get better service. It lasted 672 miles. To Recluse's credit they are replacing the clutch pack under warranty. I'm continuing with the 890 trying to ride keeping the revs up (higher oil pressure and less strain on the clutch) and turning off the electronic assist when off-roading. Regardless, on any long trip, I'll include a spare clutch pack just like the spare tubes we carry.

I too went from a Honda to a KTM about 12 years ago and had nothing but problems at first. After working through the issues with the KTM the bike has been extremely reliable for the past 10 years. Don’t give up on the KTM.

You’re doing a good job John - I’m sorry for all youe troubles but you seem to take it with a smile. I have a T7 with Rally Raid suspension so I’m happy with it, but it’s heavy when it’s upside down in a ditch 😁 like all ‘middleweight’ adv bikes.

LOL. They're all heavy when they're upside-down in a ditch. Just yours will start right back up after you right it. The 890? Eh, 50/50.

Sorry to hear about your issues just bad luck, I have the 22 s model and it’s a great bike, ok I’ve had as few issues but so far nothing to stop me riding the bike. Very slight leak from rear damper which seems to have almost stopped! And rear brake binding which I think I’ve solved. My biggest problem is wind buffeting which I’m still trying to solve.

I am sorry for your plight and appreciate your videos. I was going to buy an 890 today, but after watching your video I changed my plans. At 66 years old I feel that life is too short to spend it broken down in a hard to get to place, or at a dealership service shop. I have a 2014 KTM 500 XC-W with no kickstand switch, an ignition switch that can be bypasses, but always works, a kick starter plus battery. It sucks that KTM has to make the 890 with so many points of failure. They need to learn the basic KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle. Thank you for saving my time and frustrations.

I didn't have to take your advice because I had already done it! Bought a '22 890 ADV July of 2022. I didn't have nearly as many electrical issues as you do but I couldn't get around the bike either not starting or only starting on 1 cylinder multiple times until I'd blip the throttle. And it didn't matter if the outside temp was cold or not. The bike didn't even have 200 miles on it. Butted heads for over 2 months between the dealer and KTM. They finally bought it back.
I found a different dealer selling another '22 890 ADV and bought it in October of 2022. It's got over 2,000 miles now and starts on 2 cylinders every time! It really depends on the manufacture date with KTMs. Their quality control sucks and it shows but it really is the best fun midweight ADV bike out there!

John I’m new to your videos - and really enjoyed this summary. Could you point me towards why you didn’t go with the African twin? You mention modifying a Yamaha, why not take the Africa where you want it similarly

Mostly just tonnage. It’s a great bike that carries its weight well. The 890 carries it better.

Great vid John, love your analogy's. I have a Ducati Desert Sled that's never missed a beat, was going to have a look at one of these today as want an all rounder. But poor reliability would do my head in.

I couldn't stop laughing at your analogy with the chick you use to date. Wonderful review Thank you. I'm really sorry you're having a hard time with this particular bike. Hope the dealers give you some kind of compensation for your troubles. Good luck and hope to see more content like this from you soon.

Sorry to hear about the issues. My 2020 R has been problem free for over 19,00 miles to date ever since they replaced the faulty brake switches at the 600 mile service. Must have gotten a good one, lol. Two things I hate so far; I had to pay $150 last week for an update of the firmware/software and the valve inspection. Even more, the actual shim swapping to adjust the gap is a royal PITA having to remove the cams and work in tight quarters, plus so much to take apart and re-assemble to do it! I'm glad that on average it is every 2.5 years with the miles I average.
At some point when the awesome performance is less important I'll probably go with a Japan, inc product and dial it back a bit.

  • @TravisN

I would bet the key issue is either a weak battery, or a bad connection somewhere. My 2013 tiger 800 had that issue for awhile... in the beginning I thought it was the RFID keyfob for my office that was interfering, as sometimes separating them for a bit before trying to start the bike would let it start normally. After being stranded one day, i went to disconnect the battery, only to find the negative terminal was loose and there was enough resistance in the weeks prior to heat up and melt the terminal. Once that was fixed the problem never came back, and my work keys didn't interfere with the triumph key. It might not be your battery negative, but maybe a bad ground elsewhere?

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  Před rokem +1

I’m 99% sure it IS the battery. New video to follow….

Wow, such a bummer, sorry. I was looking for a T7 for about a year, happened into my local dealer and fell in love with a slightly used 901, I know some folks had some issues with their Nordens ( your bikes cousin). In 3 months I put 3100 miles on it, never any glitches or hiccups, unfortunately Apr 30th a distracted 18 yr old smashed into me at a red light, smashing my 901 and my dreams. I've been watching tons of 890 videos lately, lots of happy riders reports . I certainly hope your bike turns around for you, I just hate to see people patronize a company with their hard earned money only to have problems. Keep up the great videos.

Welcome to the world of KTM ownership. As an owner of an 890 Adventure R and have had the same issues and one that you have not experienced yet, the KTM battery munching issue (battery going bad, on my 3rd in 18 months) I would recommend three things. A Garmin inreach , battery Jump Starter and a good friend with a truck. The KTM bikes are like a drug, you know you should not mess with them, but once you do your hooked. Looking forward to your next review.
