I was thinking the exact same thing. She is speaking in English and they can't even the tackle the pronunciation of one last name. And if you only know one language it feels kind of wrong to make fun of someone for speaking a second/third language with an accent.

I agree with you, in that Sofia was not offended and it was all in jest, but I think the point he was trying to make was by using negative words to describe someone’s accent it could lead to other’s saying it in a less jokey tone and a more derogatory, offensive manner.
Celebrities have to be more careful and considerate in the words they chose, because others will follow.
Dylan Bergeson That’s fine in their personal, private interactions. The point is, Latinx people who aren’t friends with Ellen will be watching it, and they’re not in on the joke. It needs to be understood that there’s subtext to these comments. You’re dealing with people’s cultural identities, and for minorities in this country there’s a great deal of sensitivity around “foreignness” indicators. I’m not personally offended by her comments, but it’s not my or Ellen’s job to decide that Latinx people shouldn’t be just because one Colombian woman isn’t.

Sofia is an extremely intelligent woman. She knows her accent is what makes her funny and exotic to the Americans. She'll never lose it. Even though her appeal has sooooo much more to it, but the accent is the added bonus.

It does matter, phonetically speaking you will only hear the 'b' sound from native speakers. The only exceptions are people from places where there is influence from other languages like Catalán or native languages.

As a person who speaks English, French, Italian, it is unbearable to listen to jokes of this type regarding accents, because in general they are people who do not speak a language other than their mother tongue. This woman is bad because she never does that with other foreign actors she always does with Latinos especially with Sofia Vergara.
