I was born a year before she died. Brought up with her recordings! I am now 71 and to hear this clip is so fulfilling!

As if her magnificent singing weren't enough, after hearing her rich laughter in her delightful cavorting, I am now madly in love with her!
What absolute talent, unsurpassed even today. She could entertain at any level from Music Hall to Covent Garden. Why was this wonderful creature taken from us so awfully, so young?
Very regrettably she smoked a lot. Cancer killed her. Sad story.

my favourite Kath story goes back to when she worked as a telephonist in Blackburn. Her boss frequently told her off for her antics, sometimes to the tune of, 'Miss Ferrier, would you kindly refrain from doing cartwheels down the corridor!'. I love this recording, showing off Kath's terrific piano skills as well as her humour - just brilliant stuff!

+Caz I live not 15 minutes from her birthplace, number one Bank Terrace Higher Walton, a modest end terraced house sporting a blue plaque, further down is a small memorial garden, I visit it often, she was, by all accounts a lovely person, I had the pleasure of meeting her Goddaughter recently at a museum exhibition, it featured her famous blue dress, [which if memory serves me right was run up by sister Winifred from old curtain material], I may be way off the mark there but I will stand corrected, a lovely, down to earth Lancashire lass, after one recording with Sir Thomas Beecham she waited until the final notes had been recorded and asked, ''Was that alright luv?' A lovely lady lost too soon.
Absolutely glorious, great to hear the fun and mischief in her voice whilst singing for friends.
It's so refreshing to find the Great talents of our Age being exquisitely Human.

i cant believe that nobody thought to film her in a stage performance.we can hear her recordings but can never see that beautiful face singing.
The GREAT Contralto. Probably not the best recording but listen to her only known(?) live recording of Gluck in Amsterdam in 1951. Unsurpassed and likely to remain so.
Shows a real capability as a pianist - reading Wikip she apparently 'won numerous amateur piano competitions while working as a telephonist with the General Post Office'. Didn't take singing seriously until aged 25!

According to her sister's biography Kathleen Ferrier was at first a fine pianist and became a singer almost by accident. Some accident!
Kathleen's husband dared her to enter the singing competition: He lost his bet when she won! I love her humour, Kath was no snob. If that voice didn't come from her soul, I don't know where it came from. Pure magic!
I live not 15 minutes from Kath's birthplace, Bank Terrace, Higher Walton, Preston, Lancs, on the road to the house, tucked away in the corner of two roads is the Kathleen Ferrier memorial garden, a lovely lasting tribute, a couple of weeks ago my
local museum put on a 'Klever Kaff' exhibition, one of her dresses was on show plus letters, photo's, film, records etc., I was there as the exhibits were being unloaded into the museum, eager to show my knowledge as the photographs were being unloaded I would say, for instance, 'That is Kath playing Orpheo in Glucks Orpheo et Euredice, trying to be clever, one photo showed Kath with Benjamin Britain and Peter Pears poring over a large book, 'Oh, says I, that will be the score of the 'Rape of Lucretia', up spake the deliver of the artifacts, 'well, says he, that is what we all thought until we blew up the photo, they are actually staring at a telephone directory', exit one deflated Kath lover.
Listening to this recording and reading your words let so many emotions and memories go through my mind. It was my wife, an English teacher, who loved your country and opened my eyes for England, nature, people, culture, language, humour... And now this exceptional recording of one of England's greatest artists, and your comments. - My wife died of cancer. I certainly need not say more. And shouldn't.

BBC radio, of course, has a Hit Parade of pop songs. Her "Blow the Wind Southerly" got to number !. Unusual for a classical singer.

She was a great character. So spiritual in front of the mike, so cheeky and playful off it. Pity there is so little film footage of her. Her BBC radio talks were probably wiped. However, I found a few film clips of this party and posted it on my channel (Richard Ahearn - "Kathleen Ferrier - comedienne". With your permission, rayangreene, I'll add your posting to it. Tricia Power I bought a double album here in USA in the Hollywood Bowl shop. I did have it posted on my site as stated above but removed it. I'll try and dig it up and let you know the details as soon as possible. Glad you are doing a feature on her. Pity she was before my time and dead: would have dated her like a shot. I heard that previously, she was a telephone operator. Pervs, as you may understand, grooved her voice and gave her heavy breathing calls. When she spotted one, she'd switch on her most sexless Lancashire accent. She gave many talks on the BBC. You could try to find a BBC radio program called "Desert Island Disks". Almost anyone who was anyone was a guest on that program. I suggest you contact them though sadly, they've wiped out so much material in an economy drive in the 70s. What I fail to understand is why there is so little film footage on one so celebrated.
The disk I mentioned makes rather nasty remarks about her sexuality. Firstly, because her marriage was brief and annulled. Secondly about the contralto tones of her voice. Don't understand that. The big love of my life had exactly the same speaking voice as Ferrier, yet she was pure female animal.
Richard Ahearn Oh, ever being the opportunist, if you are in show-biz, you may wish to read a radio play script of mine. The final scene fades out with her tremulous voice singing "Abshied" (Mahler) as "The sun begins to rise and a bird sings". In spite of my silly and rude satirical sketches, I can write serious stuff.

Such a wonderful insight into the character of this heavenly contralto. How I would have loved to be at her cheeky evenings! (Incidentally, I am at present undergoing radiotherapy at UCLH where Kaff spent her last days. Our waiting room there has a lovely memorial to her.
It's on a CD called 'Songs my father taught me', it's the very first track.
I didn´t know, that she was funny as well.
