How about the 4mil concert by TwoSet? Would love to hear your opinion. Especially about the part where you gave Brett the tips for improving his fingerings. And maybe also the cadenza! đ And any other part you'd like to comment on, honestly.
Funny thing is the guy in the gray suit in the first movie, Richard Southgate, is actually a trained violinist!
Chinese drama Love scenery when the student plays Tschaikowsky violin concierto in D (I know it's fake, but I like the drama and the soundtrack). I will look for the episode and time if you want to review it. Also The Piano because I love the soundtrack.
Nodame Cantabile please, either the live action or the anime! đ
Amadeus movie where he corrects Saleri!
Ray isnât quite as ruthless as Brett and Eddy when he rated violin scenes.
I agree! Brett and Eddy will always crank the roasting knob when talking about violin in movies!
It's because he doesn't have Ling Ling Insurance yet!
@@zazazebee petition to get ray lingling insurance
actually Ray gave a much lower score to the violinist in Le Concert than Brett & Eddy
@@jimmywu6471 I agree!!!
Ray is picking up where Brett and Eddy left off with their roasts
picking off
True!!!
@@brookev2371 picking up*
âŠand im ALL HERE FOR IT
Brett and Eddy did a rotisserie of these movie musicians! Thatâs how bad they roasted them.
I remember when TwoSet made a recording of 'what it would have actually sounded like on set' for the first movie. I almost died
Whatâs the video called?
"Le concert" is actually a really good movie, I'd recommend it.
This violin soloist gets asked to play Tchaikovsky with an orchestra that was disbanded years ago because they stood up to the political regime in Russia. They've all gone their own way, and haven't practised in years. But the conductor gets them all back together, however they dont rehearse begore the big opening and thats why it's absolutely horrific at the beginning, but once the soloist starts to play, they all slowly come together.
The movie is about the magic of coming together through music, putting aside any differences, and reaching for perfection.
Absolutely recommend it, well worth the watch, and the main actress (MĂ©lanie Laurent) is amazing. Granted, violin skills aren't great but the acting is top notch otherwise :)
Wow this is super insightful! Ok but what about the super annoying guy? Whatâs his role?
@@RayChenViolinist so basically he used to be in the orchestra that was disbanded, but then he kind of went back to his family and didn't play professionally anymore. Many of these musicians are quite poor and end up playing on the street or with groups of Gypsies.
This guy in question is definitely annoying, and the context is that the orchestra members have been basically partying in Paris instead of rehearsing (because they get a chance to travel there for the first time in their life). The soloist (the woman) is annoyed that they think they don't need to rehearse and questions their competence.
The guy starts to show off to prove they can still play.
Obviously at the end, on he day of the concert, it starts off awful because they haven't played in 30 years lol. But they all come together and deliver an incredible performance in the end.
I don't know who scored it but it was awesome! Except they had to cut part of the concerto to make it a bit shorter. But they still left a long 15-20min scene of the actual concert at the end.
@@Lindraella Thank you for your well explained summary! I also love this movie and in fact, I LOVE the "super annoying guy" hahahaha! He is a very respected gypsy violinist, Anghel Gheorghe. Menuhin only allowed gypsy musicians when he was eating out in restaurants, and I am sure he would approve Mr Gheorghe!
@@kw3560 awesome, I didn't know that! I'm going to look him up now :)
@@RayChenViolinist by the way, I just realized this movie is available for free on CZcams (in the US), in case you ever want to check it out or have time to kill!
David Garrett played Paganini in the Devil's Violinist and he made the musical arrengements too. In Le concert, the guy playing the Paganini No. 24 is an actual violinist. His name is Gheorghe âCaliuâ Anghel , comes from Romania , he belongs to the Romani people and is the director of the band "Taraf de Caliu" which was founded as replacement of "Taraf de HaĂŻdouks" (fun fact: Menuhin was fan of them) .
The historic Paganini mostly toured with a guitarist not an orchestra
David Garrett is a horrible violinist! I would never hire him to play anything, LOL!
@@ondinehd6889 OK, who are you?
@@Visitkarte You want me to tell you who I am, on the internet??? LOL! I hope you know well that we are not supposed to do that for the safety of all of us. But I'll just say this: both my parents have had long, and successful international performing careers , my father is a concert-violinist, and my mother is a concert-pianist. They also taught respectively at two of the most prestigious music conservatories in the the world, and my step-father was principal cellist of one of the most important orchestras in the world for many years. So, I do know what I am talking about.
â@@ondinehd6889 the question was who are YOU, not who are your relatives.
Funny thing is the guy in the gray suit in the first movie, Richard Southgate, is actually a trained violinist!
To illuminate the spotlight in the 18 hundreds. That was actually possible at the time, not in that modern color tone but it could be done. You would reflect a strong lamp through a lens and mirror contraption. Loui the 14 used this in some of his stage plays even earlier when depicting the sun god. Though it was a heavy, cumbersome and expensive apparatus. Unlikely to be in a place like the one in the movie and itâs light would have been less focused and very jellow.
Again - learning from you history buffs
I think that's supposed to be limelight. It was discovered in 1820s, was used at Covent Garden Theatre from 1837 and became widespread in 1860s at theatres. So it couldn't have been used at that concert but it's not that far off either.
How this man can do so many entertaining things yet with so much quality. First soloist, not bad, then Tonic and now (along with others) getting active again on a youtube channel. Giving free masterclasses on Tonic and still being so classy, brilliant, kind, polite, funny. Is this man for real?
Iâll definitely watch a movie where Ray plays a violinist đ
I've already added to my list in Netflix đđ
Me too
i love the editors for Ray's and Twoset's videos. they're so...
A M AAAAAAAAAAAA Z I N G
We saw you yesterday in concert in Wiesbaden. It was amazing! Our 11 years old son was so sad when you sad you need to save energy for A Dur later. He wanted to see more of you. But we had to leave during the break. Too late for our son Yunis. Thank you for a wonderful performance â€
Ah! Next time!! đ«
@@RayChenViolinist Going to Singapore anytime soon? I know it's not going to happen for Malaysia. đ„Č
@@Y3llow_Submarin3 Ray Chen came to Malaysia in 2018, I was there, it was Symphonie Espagnole, truly beautiful piece played by him. I don't know when will Ray come to Malaysia or Singapore anytime soon tho, he also went to Singapore for prokofiev violin concerto no 2 in 2019, I was also there lol.
We need ray to have ling ling insurance so he can be more ruthless with the roasts! đđđ
I like that Ray seemed to rate the actors on how well they could make him suspend disbelief and enjoy the show.
for the devil's violinist scene, paganini was supposed to be on stage and the piece they were supposed to be playing was concerto 1. that's why the orchestra is there and they looked befuddled. paganini walks in late and decides to do caprice 24 instead. that's why it looks odd unless you watch the previous couple of scenes.
I'm happy to see "Hank" again. He's so easygoing despite the fact that you got all the music talent in the family. Maybe Hank is a math whizz?!
Is no one going to talk about Ray composing the music for the movie.. you are amazing!
From the movie "Le Concert", the violinist playing in a circle and than switching to paganini is Caliu, a very talented violinist from Romania and I would love if you would react to his music and band called "Taraf de Caliu" because he trully is a master!
And if you search the internet you find Johnny Depp talking about their music, they got to know each other during the filming of the movie "The man who cried"
Also search for "Taraf de Haidouks"
I love his humble titles "professional violinist" instead of the more accurate "world class soloist." That's why he's the kind of guy we all want to be friends with. Haha.
Thanks Ray Chen. You are one of the great violin stars of this world. Full movie list:
High Strung (2016) 0:58
The Violin Teacher (2012) 5:40
The Song Of Names (2019) 7:19
The Concert (2009) 9:10
The Devils Violinist (2019) 13:31
I wish Hollywood would make a movie starring Ray Chen! It would be amazing to watch him rock out on his violin on the big screen.
Any video you create with Brett and Eddy is sure to be a winner! But I know they are busy getting ready for their tour.
I think you should really watch "Le Concert" the scene makes absolute sense if you know the story line. And in addition, it is hilarious. Of course, the actor of the conductor was not really conducting, but the musicians got trainers to be able to act realistically.
The guy from the "The concert" film is a Romanian violonist he's from my country and he is very popular aroud here đ
đ€Łhaha Ray let Hank out. He must be practicing on Tonicđ»
Eagerly waiting for the regular uploads! đ
Thanks you for introducing The Song of Names to us @7:19, and a short clip, Violin Teacher scene, from Parental Guidance (2012) @5:45. In addition, the full Violin Teacher scene clip can be found on CZcams 20th Century Studios UK.
Glad to see Hank again.
đ More please! Always happy to get notifications from your channel Ray! đ
Ray, you' re doing great.đ
I love your violin even over CZcams, the beautiful sound comes through.
Lol your so much fun Ray! I love it!
So good to see a musician of your level with this happy sense of humor. Greetings from Brazil
Absolutely incredible scenes... Very enjoying this fresh approach to spread classical music knowledge through entertainment
Ray is hilarious and the movie review was fun and insightful! Looking forward to more vids from Ray
Fun video! Glad to see you're back regularly. :D
What about Arcane? That guy seemed to know what he was doing. And the syncing was flawless.
Wunderbar! More more more!
Ray replicating the music is too wonderful
Did Ray just play flight of the bumblebee in less than a MINUTE? Holy macaroni
"Violin's Ray Chen" He belongs to the the violin now đ
Honestly, not trying tease, it just struck my funny bone! ("How do I introduce myself again?")
Very good ratings overall! It was enjoyable to watch.
Liked and subscribed. I love your analysis. I haven't seen these films either.
I love these videos and need MORE PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
Super! Loved the video!
I've seen you on the Queen Elisabeth Compétition! I've been a fan ever since. Greetings from Belgium!
Very interesting, thanks :)
How did I miss the notification for this? Thanks for the fun video!
Really brilliant , cheers
I have listened to your music but never seen a video. You're great, certainly am going to watch more of them. This is a lot of fun!
I'd love to see you react to "TĂĄr", the Todd Field film with Cate Blanchett.
This is a great episode. If you haven't done another review. For the red violin, I would love to see it.
Hey Ray, you performed the score for that movie, NICE!đ„đ Also, I am with you regarding that bow hitting scene. Whether a hobbyist or professional, people sacrificially spend (what is for them) a lot of money for their violin and bow so you donât play around with either.
When you showed the pic from the movie of the violinist and the dancer, I knew that I was already done. I would not hold my violin like that around anyone, including my husband!đ
Ray's reviews are so cute and polite đ
Would recommend Chinese film ćäœ ćšäžè”· which has very very realistic violining and a joy to watch as a musician (:
In the last clip, from Legends of Tomorrow, it seems like the actress, Tala Ashe really played the violin, as she has practiced since young age.
Youâre great đ
I like such videos a lot. You should definatly do more of those.đ
Kudos for editor-chaaanâ€
LMAO Can imagine the whole video just by the cover
Feeling super excited as a Twoset&Ray's fanđ»
Same! TwoSet/Ray Boi fan here!
This was pretty entertaining! You should do more- Lestat scene form Queen of the Damned is a grate place to start!
9:52 Is the supposed editor of that video, who is sliding in from the left, actually Taran Van Hemert @TaranVH from LMG?
I really like rayâs cute response đđđđ and you really answer my questions when I am watching those movie. I always wonder r they really playing đ
I would love to see Ray review the Chinese movie âTogetherâ đ
He was too generous in giving the scores.
As a Ling Ling wannabe/TwoSet fan/Ray Boi fan, one word describes this - iNTreSTing!
Ray, i play three instruments and I'm in middle school but I cannot play trumpet on tonic. why are their limited instruments? I'm just curious. love your vids by the way!
I want to see you play the violin in a movie soon.

You need to watch The Concert in full. That ending scene is spectacular, the rest of the concerto sounds completely diffrent just after the opening. The guy playing Paganini is actually a famous Romani Gypsy music player, part of a famous band called Taraf de Haidouks
I was waiting for "Red Violin"
Ray please review Brett's Mendelssohn! Please!!
Ray great video, by the way was your T-shirt specially made for you or is it available as I would love one.đ
That perfect pitch
I didnât know Brett was here 16:22 đ
Chloe Moretz in If I Stay was pretty good in my opinion
that's Gheorghe Anghel from Taraf de HaĂŻdouks
he's great!
âRankâ duo is the best!đ
Hankâ€â€â€
I heard "I'm Violin's Ray Chen" and i gotta say it has a nice ring to it đ
The moment when the violin bow became the fencing swordđđđđ
Hey Ray, huge fan of yours from the UK here. Long story short to save your time: what's your favourite VIOLIN rendition of Bach's Chaconne in D (apart of yoursđ)? Thank you so much. R.
Here is a challenge for Ray: the movie "Un Couer en Hiver", a French movie from 1992. Beautiful soundtrack with music by Ravel!
THE RETURN OF HANK CHANG
14:22 twoset said that ray. đ
I was wondering if he was going to bring up Song of Names. Because I already knew he was in it.
first found Ray through his work on Arcane, and if it's anything to go by, he's the most qualified person EVER for this job
interesting because the clip from le concert that twoset reviewed seemed fine in terms of syncing... maybe it was your editor?
Ray-ting system đ€Ł
You should do one of these with twoset and get the trio back together
9:28 this guy is super legit. Anghel Gheorghe, known from Taraf de Haidouks. Excellent musicians from Romania đ
Hank is back! Ray, u gotta let him free!
I think we would love to see that you actually roasted them. You are too nice đ.
Cam you do a video explaining roman kim techniques?
Now do âHumoresqueâ from 1946, and Stewart Granger in âThe Magic Bowâ; but you must not only critique his violin chops, but also his sword fighting acumen.
Have an odd request for you Jill Violinist. She is 1: violinist in the Japanese gothic metal band Unlucky Morpheus AND 2:does solo and duet vids and 3: user reviews of advancing level student model violins (price points in lower hundreds of dollars in the Japanese market
2:35 is gold đ
Even though my bow is really cheap, I cringed!
đ đ đ đ thanks!
9:25 Thatâs Gheorghe Anghel Caliu, a Romanian violinist of rromani ethnicity from the lÄutari group âTaraf de Haidouksâ ;) He did not study music theory _*at all_*(and doesnât even know how to sight read)and plays all of his pieces by ear. The âdefinitely not Ravelâ music is in fact a traditional rromani piece played at Romanian weddings. Kind of a fun fact, Caliu did not practice the Paganini piece before filming, he hadnât played it before in his life; instead he listened to it 20 minutes before filming and was then able to play it, so mad respect to this guy. For context, the whole plot of the movie revolves around the life of a conductor for the Bolshoi orchestra in the communist period . He hired Jewish and rromani musicians during ww2 I believe and was fired for this. Now the conductor works as a lowly janitor but is given the opportunity to reunite his orchestra and perform in Paris. The character played by Caliu is a rroma man who did not receive any formal education and experiences hardships and discrimination from the classical musical society, thus mirroring Caliuâs own experiences with racism and elitism in the industry. If you want to find more about traditional Romanian/Rromani music you should check Taraf de Haidouks out, itâs definitely an acquired taste but this type of music truly reflects the dying culture of the lÄutari đ
nice
