I am a Korean. First of all, thank you for posting this precious video. I found the legend of two Korean marathons in this video.
3:43 4:53 No.273 he's name is Choi-Yoon-Chil (1928-2020)
He competed in the 1950 Boston Marathon and finished third place. And he finished fourth at the 1952 Olympics. He was in first place at the 1948 Olympics and withdrew due to a failure to control his condition
6:02 6:20 No.272 he's name is Seo-Yoon-Bok (1923-2017)
He was the winner of the 1947 Boston Marathon.
He is the first world champion in sports since the founding of the Republic of Korea. So his position in Korea was high.
The Korean people expect he would win a gold medal at the Olympics, but he also finished about 20th due to his poor condition.
Korea was the poorest country in the world at that time. It took a long time to arrive in London, and it was not easy to adapt to local climate conditions and food accommodation. Korean people still respect and are proud of them. Fortunately, they lived happily and healthily over the age of 90.🙂

@@whistleblower4570 1948년 올림픽에는 서윤복 최윤칠 두 선수만 참가했네요. 여담으로 함기용 선수는 아주 많이 불운한게... 보스턴 마라톤 우승하고 귀국한지 6일만에 한국전쟁이 발발 했다고 하네요. 그때도 스포츠 인재라서 징집은 면제 받았지만 마라톤 선수 생활은 포기하고 공무원이 되서 있다가 은행팀에서 마라톤 감독직 맡고 있다가 그만두고 은행 지점장까지 지내셨다 합니다. 아직도 생존해 계십니다. 가만보니 마라톤 레전드들 대부분 장수 하시네요. 오늘부터 다시 뜁니다😀

@@beorlingooh thank you. 😀 I didn't have any information about him. It's the first time I've heard of it.
@@beorlingo I just searched for information about him. And he already died in 2011. (1925-2011) He succeeded as an entrepreneur and lived a prosperous life. He was also a student at Korea University, a prestigious university in Korea, when he participated in the Olympics.
I was a marathon runner now 79. Running is special you have to do that on your own
Every marathon runner will say the same thing
In my running days I ran
Around 400 marathons
Now I still walk a lot.

What a bold, courageous effort by Etienne Gailly of Belgium. He almost reached his dream of winning Olympic gold. As it were, he was so exhausted at the end - he required ten days in hospital after the race to recover.
Huge respect for these guys, especially for the Belgian. His effort and sheer willpower bring tears to my eyes.
Got to feel for Gailly, he gave it all throughout the race.
This is a great piece of history, incredibly interesting to see how a marathon looked back then, plus have some peeks of London at the time.
Marathon, a sport that you should never ever underestimate.

Yes, many look like they has been through the trauma and trials of war, especially the European runners.
Etienne Gailly was a paratrooper with the Free Belgium forces and saw the devastation of his homeland and the continent first hand. He hated the Germans with a passion for what they did and resolved to win a gold medal at the 1948 marathon for the glory of his country.
The winning time was 2:34. Which just shows how much progress has been made since then. The aveage club runner would run that time now
