- Here is the 2014 E case assortment for the Hot Wheels Retro Entertainment line. I open them all up for a closer look this time! Not only that but I do some comparisons with their basic counterparts. The models in this case are:
'77 Custom Dodge Van representing
Anchorman, The Legend Of Ron Burgundy
'67 Ford Bronco for Zoolander
Lotus Esprit S1 representing
James Bond 007 The Spy Who Loved Me
The Homer for The Simpsons
'65 Mustang representing
Beverly Hills 90210
In the 2014 Hot Wheels Mustang 50th 5-pack, Mattel made a running change to the '65 Mustang. They made a casting change and the opening hood was gone. No opening hood and the base was changed to plastic. The Retro version shows that Mattel still has the metal base and opening hood tooling for the adult collectibles.
The '77 Custom Dodge Van has always had the large sunroof. In it's place for this release, they tooled up a roof rack and also used a metal base. The '4 KVWN San Diego' tampo is on three sides with the #4 on the roof rack of this news van. I showed a basic release that also had an Action News livery before. It was 2010 Collector #117 in the basic range.
The Zoolander Bronco was interesting. I wonder if it is the first release of this tooling. I have showed the Nose Art '67 Ford Bronco and it was not the same. Neither was the Custom Ford Bronco. I showed the 2012 Offroad Series and the Stunt Circut 5-pack versions.
I compared the 2014 New Model Homer with the Retro. It uses a metal base and got some nice tampos for collectible details.
I also compared the 2015 New Model Lotus Esprit. Very different from the Retro!

The Lotus Esprit is indeed a submarine, and it is known to fans as 'Wet Nellie' (James Bond's lethal autogyro in the movie 'You Only Live Twice' was called 'Little Nellie', so this was an homage to that). The side parts are diving planes, and each works independently. The rear is quad propellors and twin rudders. The mast is the periscope, and the indent on the driver's side is the missile sight. The windows are covered with armoured shutters, and there are four small surface to air missiles in tubes in the rear window area. The vehicle was a real physical prop, which actually worked. The sequence where Bond (Roger Moore, R.I.P.) escapes a hostile helicopter, by driving at speed, off a jetty into the sea, is still pretty spectacular, even for a movie (The Spy Who Loved Me), made in 1977. Oh, and you can be sure I'm getting a couple of those 'Anchorman' vans. Cheers!
Man, The Homer looks 1000 times better than the basic version, I gotta get my hands on that for sure!

GHOSTJERKER I would have thought that Homer would be my favorite but when it came to the end of the video, the simplicity of the Bronco and those wheels just stood out.

The Mustang looks like a high quality showroom collectors prototype. I'm not much of a Ford person, but this Mustang looks just like the real thing. But my very favorites in this video are: The James Bond Lotus and the Homer Simpson car.
The Homer is on my wish list for sure. I'll be looking out for that one, always loved that car.

I noticed the RE Lotus has only one rear view mirror at the driverside and the basic has two. Love the Lotus, it's a very cool casting. Nice vid.
The Ford Bronco And The Homer Are My Favorites From This Mix
I find it a little disappointing that the Retro Entertainment BEVERLY HILLS 90210 '65 Mustang has the windshield that isn't flush to the hood, the same problem I've had with other recent releases of the '65 Mustang convertible in premium lines like HW Garage and Cool Classics, yet the cheapened closed hood and plastic base version of the convertible from the newer shipments of the 2014 Mustang 5-pack as seen here has the windshield attached much better than the version I pay several dollars more for (well, several dollars more if you divide the cost of the five-pack by five, I know).
I believe the front wings on the Lotus submarine are supposed to be elevators for diving and rising while the back ones are for steering, hence why the front ones are connected to each other while the rear ones move independently of one another.
Also, I think that's supposed to be a periscope on the roof, not an antenna.
I don't mind the plastic wheels. If I'm spending ~$5 on a Hot Wheels "car", I want it to roll. I don't think I've bought any Retro Entertainment vehicles that don't at the very least roll.

i'm serpised that metal didn't raid the old castings, years ago corgi brought out loads of james bound stuff, one of them being the lotas, it was pritty much like that only more british, and it was before tampo's back in the day you had paper sticker tampo's which to find on 70's and earily 80's matchbox and corgi is quite rare

I'm a bit disappointed in Mattel's execution of the Anchorman van... especially when compared with Greenlight's version. I do, however, like the 007 Lotus.

Greenlight released the zoolander bronco and anchorman van in the same assortment last year.
Kyle-noel I seen that. I don't know anything for sure but it is not unusual for different companies to get the license to do the same cars. As you know, GL had the license last year and apparently Mattel has it this year.
out of all the retro entertainment vehicles I don't have a favorite but out of the whole line up my favorite car is the back to the future one and I just picked up the homer (love it) and I also picked up the lotus esprit from the spy who loved me and I was wondering dose the lotus esprit tiny wheels roll or are they just for looks
This is the saddest case outing for Mattel, that I've seen, so far. They showed us that they took the opening hood Mustang out of the basic line just so that they could stick it to the customer. They showed us that if we want a Homer we better get the more expensive premium cause the basic version was very limited when they released it. They took the James bond car from the basic line up, put tiny PLASTIC wheels on a premium car. And they made two VASTLY inferior castings in the Anchor Man Van and the Zoolander Bronco, Green light made much better models for the same price.
This case shows us how greedy and careless Mattel is.
Hmmmmm I like the bronco lotus and mustang but since I buy stuff on budgets I am not going to pick up all three I will pick up the one I see if I find this assortment great video :)

I'm in Canada and the Homer has shown up again in the most recent International mix to hit Canadian Walmart stores, although Walmarts in the Ottawa area seem to be several case codes behind the USA at the moment (it's the same mix as the Greenwood Corvette Super, however long ago that was).
(At least the long card mix, the short card mix now showing up at Canadian Walmarts and Targets is the one with the '69 Corvette Stingray Super TH.)

I like the bond mainline best..Kid at O'Reilly's auto parts sends for HW when I ask him they send around 20 same day! That's how I get most good cars. They cost $1.60 though...Wonder if the finned bond will be a mainline? Like how you do the links. Tomorrow I go to the pawn shop honey hole and get to pick through about a hundred older main line's! Will put pics up on HW collectors. I'm signpro there,

Franco Kellerman Yes, loose cars would be worth less than if they were still in the package. That being said, I can appreciate the cars much better loose. Finally, if a car was worth $4 in the package and by opening it up, it was only worth $2 now, am I really going to miss $2 in value? No. I like the cars, not the 'value'.

Akash Raj Dahal Retro are more expensive because they will have nicer features such as rubber tires, metal bases, added paint details or even added parts as with the Anchorman van. Some are actually 100% brand new as with the James Bond Lotus Esprit.

Alvaro garcia The Homer has been in several assortments over the past six months. It is even in my recent 2015 F case unboxing video. The reason is that it is hard to find is because they keep getting bought. Personally, I have enough of them so it isn't me this time LOL
