- Ever wondered "How do cars get to the dealership ? Here is my Autorack unloader short film. From OTR trucker of all 48 states with 100s of thousands of miles under my belt to an Auto Unloader. Here's a Behind the scenes look for any railfan or person interested in how their car reached their driveway, showing you how we were unloading autoracks with new cars from an Autorack car carrier railway... one Rail after another. It took MANY MONTHS of photos and filming all of these scenes... Made even harder by the vast amounts of men that quit quickly after being hired because it's a very laboring job... in all weather... with rails that seem to never end. These were just random pics/vids in my phone and was intended to be just for my personal memories like every other job. That new smell of getting in and out of 50 to 100+ vehicles every day was amazing(Except U-Hauls đ€ą) lol and the fact that you get to drive them before almost anyone else. I work in a rail yard in Illinois doing the same: dropping and loading cars, chocks breaking and tying down, dropping plates, moving ramps, bay tagging, you name it. Also doing at least 12 hours daily. Nice video!

@@Entre1099 So far the turnover rate is below average... we keep at least 60% of the workers, the rest either quit or are fired mostly for attendance.

@@Entre1099 once a plate was not placed the right way, it flipped up and ripped off clean the muffler of a minivan. BTW, what is the most expensive car you have driven in your workplace? I drove a Lexus LC 500, worth $112,000.

Yeah when we were down to a handful of workers... Long hours. Good pay tho for an all day total body workout when OT hits lol. But yeah we got those vehicles on the road... Car production doesnât stop. It just backs up.
Those chocks are a pain at times. Sometimes they wonât hold the vehicle properly then sometimes you canât get them off. I canât tell you how many pairs of steel toes I went through lol. Thx for watching

I be starting mined unloading job soon . I can't wait I'm small guy so it be a breeze for me . Don't tell me it's a hard job. Been in oil field and manufacturing positions. Want to move up to be supervisor so I can train the guys the right way.

Holy shit This video gave me some good memories, I did this job and quit on my 2nd week lol. This job is super physical demanding and super long hours including weekends and non union which sucks. People donât last no more than 2-3 week.

I did this job for 13 years In Janesville Wisconsin before the GM plant closed. I loved it! Still have my tools for removing the chalks.

Ohhh ok. I loved the job too. I had to leave when it slowed down tho. It got so bad we were only making like $300/wk. Then I had a +1hr drive back and fourth to work. I worked so much the manager had to tell me I couldnât come in lol. It was easy as long as youâre physically fit and not too tall. I think youâre the 1st person that commented they have done this job beforeâŠ
@@Entre1099 I imagine right now the car industry is hurting! The car dealerships are empty! Tall came in handy if youâre doing bi-levels lol. I got 13 stitches in my head one time going between cars on a tri-level on the bottom deck. Yes it is very physically demanding on the shoulders and knees and back for sure! Opening and closing some of those train car doors sucked! Moving the plates between cars was not fun either. By the time I had those 13 years In I was getting to the point where I had enough seniority to get off the trains and just drive the suburbans,tahoes and medium duties up from the plant and park them. That was a gravy job!
Nice you could drive from the plant! I wish I could have done that. I also have a Class A CDL so driving duallyâs through the rail cars was easier than putting on shoes with straps instead of laces lol. I was 1 of the few people who didnât look for someone to drive the duallyâs or Uhauls etc off the rails. I was considered for being one of the supervisors but I passed on it. I loved doing what I did as a member on C Team. Couldnât see myself telling anybody what to do or driving a van all day lol. Trying to hunt down people in the parking lot and shit lol. I would do it again if I could find a place near me. The one I worked at in Dixiana SC got shut down. Very high turnover rate and we constantly had lonnnnng days trying to keep up with production. But dang you meet some of the coolest people on those jobs lol. We used to see who could close a whole train the quickest like before the van returned⊠Those doors are no joke when theyâre stuck by 1 tiny little thing lol. Brings the man outta you

Seen autoracks derailment Altoona Pennsylvania. Cleanup they were scooping up brand new F150âs with a front end loader and dumping in a dumpster. Some looked brand new .

I just started as a unloader at Interail transporting in San Bernardino all I can say is the scariest part is dropping the plates great video btw

Right⊠man I can only imagine the type of chocks they have now. We used to race each other breaking them in those hot ass rail cars. The only chocks I didnât mind was the ones on the bi levels. But those Triâs⊠smfh. I took all day. Back be all fuxked up by the time you swing down to the next level.

Iâm 21 years old, skinny, but tough. I recently applied at Inter Rail near my house. Start pay is $17 an hour. I am currently at Tractor Supply. Dealing with customers isnât for me. Especially $12.50 an hour dealing with them alongside moving heavy farm equipment around. I donât mind working in heat, cold, rain, or snow. I do realize people my age arenât willing to work anymore. I do realize there is a high turnover rate for the Inter Rail near my house. Itâs nothing at all with the people or managers, but rather the work itself. I donât mind working hard, and I donât mind taking a risk in doing this job, because, I need money, and Iâm trying to save for a better vehicle than what I have. Thanks for this video Entre đŻ
Man I apologize for the late reply. Youâre absolutely correct. Not many ppl want to âwork hardâ nowadays. But can you blame them? Lol everyone is built different. Physically and mentally. Over time I learned that I myself am built to work hard. I learn to love shit that I hate. Makes the process easier plus secures your position.
Also, turnover rate doesnât mean anything when it comes to a worker. A worker will more than likely excel at the work, which means you wonât be included in the turnover rate. Except when you move on to the next career. With the work ethic you have, consider starting a business broâŠ
Great video! I've been working at a dealership for many years. I handle all of the vehicles coming to us via transport. I'm surprised I don't see more damage on them because those are some pretty tight areas. You guys do a great job. Mostly what I see is vehicles that have jumped chock at some point during the rail trip (front and rear bumper damage). Do you guys also have to note the damage and code it out or is that somebody elses job? Again, thanks for taking the time to make this video.

Yeah most of the damage was from vehicles jumping chocks etc. As far as paint⊠Most is probably from rubbing up against the vehicles in all those tight areas. The supervisor would note it and take pictures if any had damages then we would take it upfront to be handled by someone else. As far as I know, If they had damages they were put in a section of their own. Iâm glad you got to see a good bit of the behind the scenes because I never intended on making a film out of the footage⊠It was only to remember the cool job I had lol.
I'm a loader and we take care of damage at our vpc prior to loading so it should theoretically show up undamaged unless something happens in transit or at one of these unloading yards. This guy does the inverse of my job and I'm not gonna lie if something gets lightly damaged we're gonna ship it because we know someone else is picking up the bill haha! I'm sure that's the industry standard. I do notice when we get fresh rail cars there's frequently chocks that were never removed so somebody had to have jumped em.
Man I'm looking to get into this job but I'm kinda nervous. It seems really cool though and better than dealing with customers daily! I think I'm more oriented to doing physical things so hopefully I can get into this job!
Yeah I know how that can be dealing with customers daily lol. I wouldnât say make a career out of this but it is a good good physically. We had one big guy out there who worked with us for some months and lost a lot of weight. Like 40+ pounds easyâŠ

Hey Mike⊠Keys were left in the vehicles in a certain places once they were offloaded and parked. That goes for when they were loaded also. We definitely left the windows up lol but sometimes being in the groove on a hot day⊠We would forget we let down the back window and rain just so happened to start falling. As far as lockouts, they were pretty common because sometimes the loaders would forget to leave the key in the vehicle so when they arrived we had to break into the vehicle and manually push them off the rail cars. Other times the vehicle was there but the key wasnât because the loader hopped out with it in their pocket lol. And the keys werenât labeled with the vehicle position number or vin etc⊠So it was a complete lost. A new key had to be ordered and the vehicle would be parked in a certain section on the yard. Dead batteries were treated the same. Hondas were notorious for having dead batteries. Some rail cars were even broken in during transit and had vehicles with missing batteries lol. Itâs crazy what vehicles go through just to get to us. Thx for your comment⊠hope I explained it well enough

Nah. We were mostly CSX. I was in Cayce SC at that time. They ended up shutting down that location

I didnât. I drove semi trucks so that was easy as hell for me. Most of the time only me and like 1-2 more guys would unload the duallyâs etc.

I work at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky and I have been there since 2021, my cousin is a full timer loading the rail (They load Ford pick up trucks and Chassis) and he got me hired on as a Casual, the Casuals drive the the trucks from the truck plant to park them on a lot for the ford workers to come and fix the minor issues that the trucks have, other times we take the trucks back to the Truck Plant for the rail loaders to load them, and itâs normally 20-30 people and we get transported by a bus
Sounds nice. I met a few drivers that used to do something similar. Always a good feeling to be the first to drive a brand new vehicle

I always assumed that the Police Cars weren't put on autoracks, first time I ever seen video/pictures of them inside one.
Oh they were⊠By the rail cars. We had one day where it was at least 6-10 rail cars full of them. Top to bottom. We never had any of the SUVs though⊠Only sedans. They usually always came in groups then you wouldnât see any for a few days etc
Way late to the party but that was a cool video. Another job thats never thought of but so vital for how this country runs every day. I live near the Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio and they park their vehicles the same way in the yard. Driver's side tires ON the yellow line. Why is this? To ensure the vehicles are spaced well?

If I remember correctly, the tires are on the line to ensure the driver can exit the vehicle without banging up or door dinging the vehicle to the left. To be honest, parking on the line was one of the hardest things to get used to doing.

How do you get in the vehicles with such a tight space?
Gotta know how to maneuver lol. The tri level rail cars were the hardest. About a 4.5ft ceiling and only maybe 2ft you can open the door at times... You learn how to become snake like lol or literally enter the cars head first like diving in a pool lol. I never actually thought about how we did it. It was just something we did naturally over time. Good question tho
How long on average do the vehicles wait in the lot after unloading before being picked up by a semi car hauler?
Hey sorry I took so long on the response.
The average time was pretty short at that facility. Some days they would be picked up within a few hours after we unloaded them. The longest it would take is about 2 days. Most days we were actually unloading with truckers and hot shot drivers loading a few yards from us. When we were backed up sometimes 50 plus railsâŠ. Yeah we had some very long work days trying to catch up with only a few people. Hope that answers your question

Love the video, great insight. Quick question, I ordered a Ford truck which is currently sitting in at Ramp 12 in Jacksonville, FL. Itâs been there since 11/21/22 (today is 1/20/23). How do I contact them them to see why it isnât moving to my dealership? Ford or my dealership have no answers.
I honestly donât know for sure. But, if itâs supposed to be offloaded from a rail car, maybe theyâre backed up and havenât gotten to that rail car yet. At some points we would be 300-500 rail cars backed up with only 5-8 people unloading them from the rail cars. As far as contacting the actual rail service⊠Iâm honestly not sure how you would go about doing that.

Iâm glad I can help you out with at least some insight as to how theyâre transported. But yeah, Iâm honestly thinking it may actually be sitting on a rail car if the dealership canât even tell you. This part of the industry has a high employee turnover rate. If itâs not in a yard waiting to be unloaded then it would be on a truck. I drove trucks also and Iâm pretty sure no vehicle sits on a semi truck for 3 months lol. I hope you get your vehicle soon!

No definitely not as a career. More like a way to get your money up and get out to either start your own business or invest in something that sets you up for better financially. Not a bad job tho just not career material imoâŠ

At the yard where this footage came from, it wasnât very long. Literally a few days at most. Sometimes as soon as we unloaded a vehicle, the truckers/hotshot drivers would be loading it onto their rigs. Thatâs when we were really backed up though. But yeah⊠Not too long at all

I honestly donât know. We never had anyone come directly to us to pick up a vehicle. Only the truckers and hotshot drivers who took the cars to the dealerships etc. But⊠maybe someone in the comments will see this and have a better answer for you.

Dump trucks go up top only. Dually trucks arent bad but nothing is after stuffing modified units in a rail car.

I really think the pay depends on where youâre located honestly. Just like other terminals used to get the job done faster because they had way more people, better equipment etc. I saw about $800-1000/wk after taxes with 0 dependents when I worked there. But you must have stamina because you can easily do 70hrs every week. Especially when the rail cars are backed up. But my manager literally had to tell me not to come to work on my off days sometimes because I would work a month straight lol. I was just preparing for the son I ended up having not too long after I left that job

Yeah those plates are pretty high. And the 54s or 56s definitely have some weight to them. I canât remember what the number was but throwing plates definitely wakes you up lol.

What type of system did you have to identify what vehicle was parked in which spot? So when the transport company comes to pick up a batch of vehicles, how do they know where they are all parked?
It was a paper code. Paper codes were put with each vehicle for a diff spot on the yard. The process of coding the cars was done about the same time as when the wheel chocks were broken so we could drive them off. The car haulers would then use the paper code to find the vehicle. The yard had different sections also like Row A etc
@@Entre1099 That's lot more basic than I thought it would be. I was here picturing bar codes, scanners, etc, lol.
Youâre right⊠it does include that. But the scanners were a whole different job there. They would scan them into the system some time after we parked them.

How do you get into the vehicle inside the autorack
So on Biâs⊠The rails with only 2 levels⊠Itâs pretty easy because you can almost open the doors fully to get in easily. But when it comes to triâs rails(3 levels)⊠You have to slide in lol. Literally. The doors barely open enough for you to get in because itâs so tight. Sometimes you have to dive in head first, other times you may have to take a different route, like going through the passenger side because itâs a few more inches of room depending on how the vehicle was parked. After a while you get the hang of it though and youâll be able to slide into any vehicle with ease lol. The plastic seat covers help out a bit. It has its dangers. 1 guy fell from the 2nd floor on a Bi-level rail car. Luckily he missed the knuckle that holds the rail cars together. I almost got hit by the train as it was backing in one night⊠Crossing from rail car to rail car can be dangerous when breaking the chocks⊠As well as climbing the ladder all day. You have to watch your head almost all the time because nothing on the rail cars bend lol. Pure iron. Driving over the plates from rail car to rail car can be dangerous because if they are too short then⊠You know. Also setting the plates if youâre sore or tired⊠You may drop it. And you have to lift them pretty high. Same goes for dropping the plates down to the next level⊠especially on a Tri-level. Not much room for error or room to work since Triâs are so compact. But yeah it has itâs dangers but as long as you stay focused I donât think you would have any major problems.

What happens if a shipment of manuals come in and you donât know how to drive a manual?
Lol it was a lot of people who couldnât drive them. Those who can drive manuals just take over unloading until an automatic transmission pops up. Then we can all unload the vehicles as normal

I canât give a straight answer on that. What Iâve learned after posting this video and seeing all the comments⊠the job differs depending on which facility youâre at. At the one I worked at, I would say a solid 8. Thatâs if youâre in shape and know how to move efficiently. Our facility was always short staffed so it would actually be a 10 for someone who isnât active everyday coming out there. But never judge a job until you work it lol. Some workers make the hardest shxt look easy⊠Thx for your comment.
â@Entre1099 I took the job...I give it a 100 lol. We do 120+ railcars a day. This heat has been brutal. Tri levels are a different monster. Definitely not for the weak at all. A man's job 4 sho. We got 4 crews of 6. It's run and gun the whole day

I imagine cars and trucks get damaged all the time during loading and unloading. Is that the case?
Yep. Well not necessarily all the time⊠But it does happen often. If it wasnât caused from someone unloading the vehicle then it was caused from the train hitting the brakes, a loader not securing the vehicle to the floor properly, or the vehicle jumping the wheel chocks during itâs journey from the factory. Had a few vehicles that were almost sideways when we opened the rail car doors a few times. Before working there I never knew those things happened during a vehicles first 1-5 miles.

Whenever we had injured(lol) vehicles on the rail cars, they were parked in a damaged section for repairs. So yeah Iâm sure they were still sold as new as long as the damages werenât too bad. Other than that I think they were probably scrappedâŠ

I honestly canât remember. But we did get many opportunities to chat with the spotters for the train. Maybe they can hook you up with a position. I think you have to go away for like 6mo of nicely paid training thoughâŠ

Cool cool. The only thing I can say is be used to bending down breaking wheel chocks for the first few days. Thatâs what we had new workers doing until they learned how to drive through the rail cars. I think by the 3rd or 4th day they were driving with us. They also might have you coding the vehicles too for the 1st couple of days.. Thats putting the cards in the vehicles to tell you where they need to be parked

Iâm not sure what it is nowadays but back when I worked I would see at least $800+ checks. This was 2016-17. This also depends on your stateâŠ
Depends on the state from lowest I seen was 12.50 and the most was $19 but most workers from any site mainly makes 800-1000 a week

My terminal was in an area where a lot of ppl werenât built for the long hours and actual Work Work. I donât think every terminal broke chocks etc the same way. Or coding cars. Ppl just couldnât hang out there.

@@Entre1099 makes sense. Used to for 12 years at Lansing LDT Terminal. It wasn't uncommon to see everyone doing 20-30, sometimes faster thru the trains. By far, the most fun I've had at a job. Also the most annoyances.
Damn nice. I only worked there for about 10 months until it got slow. Probably the best job I ever had. I still hear the plates dropping and cars flying through the rails to this day. I fid this job after coming off the road for truck driving and now I feel like I can drive anything through anything lol.

Yes we had 1 female that worked with us when I was there. She was badass lol. Having experience driving manuals is a plus also because most people now days have no idea how to catch and drop gears lol
