I've got this beauty on loan from Galaxy Kayaks UK, it's the big brother of the Sturgeon/Alboran FX and over the next few weeks I'll be doing a series of videos on this larger than life fishing kayak.

I was out on Thursday so hopefully I’ll have that trip uploaded in the next three or four days. It’s a big kayak but I managed to get it on and off the van without too much trouble. How did it compare!? How was the speed but also how was the movement? It it easier to just go back and forth with your feet, rather then the circular motion!?
@@TheNikegolfer10 I preferred the pedal prop to be honest, simply because I found it easier. Speed is about the same. The kayak itself is bigger and heavier so I’d love to see how the smaller wahoo moved with its pedals.
@@onthedropfishing interesting, I have not tried either, I sit In my conventional kayak and just imagine being able to lure fish while I pedal around and I find myself doing the actions of the pedal and fin kayaks. I always decided that the motion of lifting my legs into the circle seemed harder but I guess I am not strapped to the pedal or aanything. Its a shame there are not many reviews on here as comparisons would really like to see the speed differences between either of the foot powered yaks to the standard paddle while out at sea
Recently found your channel and love it. Really well put together videos and light hearted too. I'm in Cornwall and looking to purchase the Supernova Kayak. Having seen your video it definitely fits the bill for me. Keep the videos coming and if you don't mind, could I request some possible content. The first being how you fit your fish finder and the clothing/safety equipment you use. I've competed in white water slalom canoeing and love fishing, so thought why not combine the two and get my first kayak, hence why i'm interested in some of the other areas. Thanks again for sharing your channel, oh and some really nice fish too :) nicely done!!
Hi Lee mate, yes the supernova is a lot of kayak for the money. It’s heavy but unbelievably stable. The fish finder fit on a supernova is so simple it only takes a minute. I filmed it a while back I think it’s in a vid already but I can’t remember, I’ll have a look.
I’m gonna do a set up vid soon anyway I think. When the rain stops!

So I’m going to be buying the supernova fx next month to use on the canals near where I live along with the Garmin striker 7sv and the appropriate fishing permits and rod licences and waterway licences and I have to admit this video is the only one stopping me from getting way to excited and being unable to sleep as I can watch and imagine it’s mine lol !!

Great vid Chris. So nice to have a Supanova vid on CZcams that’s not in Spanish or french. Be interesting to see how well this travels on the roof rack, especially with the battery hatch opening into the wind, hopefully doesn’t fly open in transit. Think it’s time I upgraded from the Galaxy Cruz. This vid has been really helpful thanks.

If you haven’t already you can get the stands I use in the vid from B&Q, about thirty quid if I remember correctly. Really useful for setting up. Tight lines mate 👍🎣
Looks great, next time you are struggling to put the blocks on the seat try some washing up liquid should help it slide on without as much hammer work

I can’t wait to get it out, just looking on the website there they are doing finance these days. There’s a finance button for “New Pay” No idea of the terms or anything but it’s definitely and option 👍🎣

Hi mate, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I don’t think think they sell the motor anymore but I know a lot of folk who have made their own mounts and added their own motors. It looks fairly simple to do. I bet it’s a little warmer in Spain than it is here in rainy England today!

It would be less than 30 seconds long on this one Dermot, there's literally nothing to do! 😂. I'll do one on the Sturgeon though when I swap the ff back over 👍🎣

Looking forward to how the new kayak goes. I might be wrong here and I'd love to hear the actual situation but I believe Galaxy kayaks are made from Low Density Polypropylene rather than high density that Viking et al are made from. PS I wonder what the weight is with all the motor etc attached. I'm guessing the C-tug is going to struggle to put it mildly.
I’m looking forward to it as well, I’ve had two Sturgeons paddle and a pedal and they’ve been awesome. It’s fine on the C-Tug with the pedal drive in. I haven’t tried to pull with the motor/battery yet 👍🎣

Hi Chris, amazing videos, I have had boats before, but would absolutely love one with a pedal drive like the one in this video. I am just a bit worried how stable they are, and if you were to tip over or fall off, for what ever reason how easy is it to get back on ? In a strong tide how is it with the pedal drive against tide, I would imagine it is easier than rowing. And last question is with the dry suit you have on, does it act as a floatation suit as well or would I also need a lifejacket. Sorry for all the questions. Hi Chris, both the Supernova and the sturgeon I use are very stable. I booked a course on self rescue before I first took to the water on my own. Touch wood I’ve never had to use those skills in anger! If you look you’ll see I’m also wearing a pfd (personal floatation device) also known as a buoyancy aid which unlike a life jacket is designed to allow you to swim/self rescue. I find both the flipper and the pedal drive easy to use personally but obviously you’ll need a basic level of fitness. I wouldn’t go out without my vhf either (waterproof and floating)
If you can find an instructor or kayak place near you, or join a local Facebook group someone will let you have a paddle around to see how you like it.

Thanks for the sub it’s much appreciated. I use a railblaza camera boom that fits into the railblaza fittings that come with the kayak. You’ll need a railblaza mount for the GoPro itself as well to fit into the boom. Hope that helps 👍🎣 (don’t forget the discount code if you get a Galaxy OTD5 😊)

I’ll be using it mainly in Rivers (I fly fish for Pike mainly, but love a bit of perch action too). Who knows, I might even try and do a bit of sea fishing out of it... always fancied having a go at some mackerel and bass on the fly 👍🏻

Hi Chris I've just purchased the supernova fx, what are all the straps on the seat for can't work it out, and how would you travel the wires for the electric motor, other than that beast of a kayak and can't wait for the winds to drop down here in South wales.

Hi mate, happy new kayak! Hope you remembered the channel discount code! The straps buckle together to provide a bit more support under the seat. You can adjust them as you feel necessary. I’ve just had the wires go under the chair at the mo and made the connection on a Tupperware box. If you look in front of the seat you’ll see a “template” same shape as the connector for when you feel brave and want to fit it permanently. The wires then would go through the yak and come out inside the battery box. I should have the first motor trip up in the next 48 hours (hopefully tomorrow) then you’ll see what I’ve done. Hi mate, the motor is the one that came with the kayak, they’re not available at the moment as they’re being redesigned. I believe they’ll be out in November 👍

Hi mate, I love the FX, it’s lighter than the supernova but then again the supernova is bigger! They’re both very stable. I have only had one trip on the supernova but I loved it! It’s a tough call, the supernova is bigger and slightly more stable (the Sturgeon is still very very stable) but is heavier and harder to car top. I’ve probably confused you even more there 🤣 if you do buy one don’t forget to use the channel discount code OTD10 for 10% off at Galaxy Kayaks UK. My first supernova trip will be up on the channel this evening 👍🎣
Did you ever compare performance of flipper and prop?
Personally I preferred the prop - not much in it but I found it a little easier👍🎣

Hi Martin, yeah it’s been great, sometimes I use the sturgeon when I’m in a hurry though as it’s lighter than the supernova but overall I like it. Hope that helps 👍🎣

How much of a benefit / convenience did you find it switching from a paddle led kayak to a motor / pedal driven Kayak? I'm enjoying my Kayak fishing but part of me is always not looking forward to how exhausted I am by the end of the session. I'm debating making the switch across to something like this type of kayak but I wanted to here first hand the experience people have had when switching? Was it worth it and any regrets? thanks
It’s made a huge difference to me, the pedals made it about 30% easier and the motor was just a game changer. As you’ll know sometimes you need to travel a good distance to get to the good ground and the paddle out (sometimes a couple of miles into the tide) was becoming a killer it was having a negative effect on the rest of the session. It’s also almost unbelievable how much dryer the whole event is when you not using a paddle and sitting in a stadium seat instead. I’ve got a motor on the sturgeon as well now and I wouldn’t go back! 👍🎣

Out of curiosity I had a look at the required battery. Galaxy recommend a 110AH battery. A quite search... £150 for a lead acid weighing in at 24kg! or £500 for a Lithium one at a mere 12kg. The sting of disappointment hurts. Love to know if a more reasonable battery would do the trick.
I have a 100ah lead acid leisure battery in my camper, that’s going to have to do for now, I’ll still be well within the weight limit as I’m about 85kg. I’ve seen liFePo 100ah batts around the £300 mark. If I owned it I would definitely go for the lithium as you can use 90% of the charge as well as opposed to about 50% of a lead acid.

I personally think you get a lot for your money, my first sturgeon, a 2015 model, is still going strong today. My pal Brian has fitted a motor to it and it fair speeds along!

Hi Carlos, I’m keeping the Sturgeon as well. I love them both, I probably prefer the Supernova pedal system and comfort if I’m being honest. The Supernova is bigger than the Sturgeon and very stable. What method of loading on to your vehicle do you use pal with such a beast of a kyak
Hi mate, when I use the Supernova I load it from the rear of my camper. I stick a big cushion on the roof and slide it up that way. Turn it over once it’s on the roof. Sounds complicated but it’s just the same as loading from the side 👍🎣

Sorry to bother you, but I just wondered what wheels/trolley you use to transport the supernova (if any). My kayak will be arriving in the morning, and I thought I best get some ordered….
I know it’s a heavier kayak. I have been looking at the C-tug wheels, and also the Conwy scupper trolley, but would appreciate your input greatly!
Thankfully, I won’t be needing them on my first outing, as I can park 2 feet away from the launch!
Hi mate, C-tug is the only option for the supernova really as it’s quite the beast. There’s a bit of a knack to it though because of the hull shape. Just make sure it’s right in the middle of the pads and that the strap is really tight 👍🎣

I was speaking to Graeme from Galaxy Kayaks earlier, as the side handles didn’t arrive, and I mentioned my worries about loading etc. He asked me if I had spoken to you, as you had talked about putting a video up on how you load yours… lol.
I advised that you had recommended the C-Tug trolley, and I’d be ordering one today. I had planned on getting them from Amazon as they were listing them cheaper than anywhere else, and without any hesitation, Graeme offered to price match them, and get them out to me (with the side handles) next day delivery! You can’t ask for better customer service than that!!!!
I’ll be taking mine out for its maiden voyage on Friday…. I’m hoping the wheels will make it easier to load onto the back of my pickup. I really don’t want to have to go out and buy a trailer for it, so wish me luck 😂👍🏻
Mate I get mine on my T5 solo so you’ll be fine with your pick up, just slide it up in stages from the rear of the vehicle on a pillow or I made a “roller” out of a drainpipe and some lagging. A pick up will be easy as you can do it in stages if you know what I mean onto the tail then on to the roof sort of thing. 👍🎣

I just thought I’d let you know that the maiden voyage was a complete success (other than one issue I had with the rudder system…..😒)
I don’t know what I was worrying about! Managed to get it on and off the pickup with no issues at all. Slid into the canal like a dream. Went through a canal lock for the first time ever, and down onto the river.
I was worried that the flow might have been a struggle to pedal against, but it was almost as easy as going downstream which was a nice surprise!
Missed a perch on my first cast, and then continued to get them one after another (nothing big though unfortunately). All whilst standing with ease, and no stability issues whatsoever 😁👍🏻
I did realise that I’ll need an anchor for definite, so that will be getting ordered soon, as well as an anchor trolley system 👍🏻
Literally can’t wait to get out again, once I have fixed the rudder issue out. EDIT - I just wanted to add that after having fixed the issue, it seems that maybe the small grub screws were just not tight enough. Because the wire is plastic coated, and the grub screws weren’t tight enough, they just stripped the plastic coating and the whole steering system became loose. I’ve now tightened the screws down onto the bare wire, and I also added a crimp to prevent it from slipping, in the event that the grub screws come loose over time. It feels real solid now 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Hi mate, Galaxy do a slot in motor for it. It just goes in where the pedal drive sits. I’ve used one since September last year and I’ve enjoyed using it. If you’re in the UK OTD5 will save you a few pounds if you were to go down that route 👍🎣

Yeah they’re spare parts you don’t need them for the set up. It’s really straightforward you only need to do what I did in the vid 👍🎣

Great video as usual Chris. One thing though; you showed us how the pedal mechanism retracted for beach landing but we didn't see how the motor retracted or did I miss something?
Thanks Chris, It’s not on a hinge or anything so I assume you just lift it. It does come with straps to secure it to the yak, we’ll work it out once I get it in the water 👍
Can the galaxy pedal drive reverse?
You can pedal backwards on the prop drive of the Supernova but not with the flippers on the Sturgeon 👍🎣
How long the motor life?
If I use a 100ah lithium battery I easy get two full trips between charges 👍🎣

They haven't provided the correct seat for this kayak, it seems they've just 'made do' with a seat from another model. The seat fits into the runners at the front but there are no runners at the back- why is this? Also there are adjustable straps on each corner of the seat but nowhere for them to strap to?
There are no runners at the back on this one mate plus the seat wouldn’t fit the front runners if it wasn’t the supernova seat - I know this as I took the sturgeon fx seat by accident once and it’s not wide enough. Sounds like you do have the correct seat there. Tight lines 👍🎣

Bought this kayak took it fishing within ten minutes the kayak was flooded water coming in from the peddle drive and flowing in through the skupper holes, after an hour my paddle drive came loose very cheap construction, my rudder started Sticking, I'm 6'3 and had issues paddling it was like a child's go kart. in my mind this is not a premium kayak 😭 not like it cost £300 I have a £300 kayak and it's twice the kayak in my mind not worth the cost
Hi mate, sounds like you had a nightmare, did you put the plate with the tray/blank thing in the gap after you put the pedals down? I’d get in touch with Galaxy if you haven’t already, their customer service is good. I personally didn’t have any issues with the pedal drive, I preferred it to the flipper drive.

Hi, had mine a year now. Great peice of kit, stable, plenty of storage, travels through the water nicely. I also have a moken 12.5 and it compares very well.

Watched your unwrapping the supernova video. The first fishing session on it , and the wildcat ones several times . Could not decide which to go for . From the 1st to 15th march galaxy had a 20 percent off offer. So nearly out of time to think I've just ordered the supernova fx . Love the orange n black together . The wildcat was out of stock in orange . Think I prefer the wildcat paddals push back and forth over the traditional pedals but that's my only fault find with the nova. But im excited to receive delivery now and coming from an old moken 12.5 I'm hoping for a more cumfy paddle 😊
