Warden Hill & Up Hatherley to Gloucester NHS Hospital via Airport, Churchdown & Elmbridge [35 mins]

Joining the shared path on Caenarvon Road, the route uses the shared path around Up Hatherley Way and Grovefield Way to leave the Reddings on a quieter country lane. After a very short section on Badgeworth Road, Elm Garden Drive provides a traffic free route, turning right at the end to Bamfurlong Lane. Turning left, the next section is the least comfortable of the route, with a short section on a busier road (many people choose to cycle on the path to the left of the road), but shortly after the M5, turn into the airport, rejoining the shared path. Pass behind the parking and follow the shared path around the airport boundary, and continue on the dirt path (not under the A40). The next section is 'fun' with a gravel track passing under the A40, but you'll soon be back on the flat towards Churchdown recreation ground (and bike pump track). Pass through the car park, and turn onton Parton Road through Churchdown village. At the traffic lights, merge onto the shared path on the far left of the junction. The shared path runs through Churchdown and out towards Elmbridge Court along the B4063.
After the underpass continue on the shared path to the lights. Whilst there is a narrow cycle lane heading towards Gloucester, this is tight and poorly protected. The quieter route crosses at the junction to the left, and follows Nine Elms Road to Elmleaze, and at the end turns right then left then right onto Merevale Road. Continue on this to the end to emerge at the peak of London Road. From here, you can join the green cycle lane (a significant missed opportunity that it isn't segregated) towards Gloucester, before turning into Hyde Lane to access Gloucester Hospital NHS.

Why have they spent a fortune putting a cycle lane along the main road when this route already exists ?

Because it's stupidly long and not appealing to new cyclists as there is some on-road sections
