  • A 1983 classic that paved the way for Golden age hip hop while painting the picture of the streets. Hit the block, bring out your boombox and let the message be heard.
    I put this up solely out of respect for the artist and because it was not uploaded on CZcams at the time.
    Released and owned by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and Sugar Hill Records

    This was back when they made REAL rap...before they started rapping about how many people they shot. Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Whodini, LL Cool J, Afrika Bambatta...those were REAL rappers!

    This song is like "The Message" x10 and the lyrics and beat is raw as fuck man. Once again my man Raheim come with some super dope and real lyrics and Melle Mel's verse on this track was definitely 10x as raw as his verses on "The Message" which we all know was super dope in its own right. Its a shame this dope record doesn't have more and views and renowned as one of the more dopest rap songs of all time. The lyrics beat and message all trump "The Message" in my opinion but hey the record was made first so I guess that's why it get's the credit that it get's and deserves.

    Its crazy how this song is almost 30 years old and one of the early stages of rap and the Hip Hop culture and still is hands down one of the rawest tracks I've ever heard. And most definitely The dopest New York themed song ever and probably never will be touched. Melle Mel killed this joint even more than his verses on "The Message." Super raw and some real real dope verses by the Grandmaster.

      @Amidat Před 10 lety +2

      this is definitely the most "conscious" NY themed song... but lyrically NY State of Mind - Nas is up there. Though Boogie Down Prod. - South Bronx is certainly right up there - but it's it's borough specific.

    • @araynova
      @araynova Před 10 lety +3

      I like how u put that brotha, borough specific. And those other two tracks u listed are right on par with this classic track, thanks for the education bruh. Nas and KRS are definitely two of the dopest MC's to grace the mic.

      araynova no prob... real hip hop.... sad the music now is so lame. NY has gotten so lame now too... sounding like they from the south. Sad.

      In fact, The Message, Rappers Delight and Planet Rock are the three most important songs in all of hip hop.....this one is a close fourth! This is track is crazy.....the music and rapping!

    Its been almost 30 years since I first heard this song back in 85 while living in Mexico..A friend that was living in Cali had brought a a mix tape from there and we were bumping these jams everyday popping and breaking in the town square. Good times!

    If only I could sleep just 10 more minutes, I might find the strength to make another day/
    If I didn't have to get up to do my thing, I'd probably sleep my whole life away/
    I messed up a nice dream somethin bout ice cream, whipped cream fruits and a cherry on top/ Now I gotta get up and face the world, the pressure is on it ain't never gonna stop.

    One of my favorite songs from back in the day - this one, plus Beat Street, and 8 Million Stories w/Kurtis Blow and RUN-DMC. Rap at its purest....'Uh-huh huh, huh, huh"....

    Raheim is soo raw man but on this joint Melle Mel came slightly more correct on this track. The good ole days when u had multiple dudes in group could really spit. Melle Mel said "Starin at skyscraper reachin in2 heaven when over in the ghetto I'm livin in hell, just play ball or be an entertainer, cause a nigga like me can't read too well."Wow some dope ass lines man. Painted the visual picture for us and show the serious of truth of young brothers mentality of growing up in the ghetto.
