Very informative video. I am glad to see you amending the raised beds. Since I have aged I cut back on garden space and only have a few raised beds now. I started my tomato and green pepper seeds last week. Can’t wait for Spring to break through. 🌿🍅🥬
Do some small container garden
I would put in some more raised bed, at a comfortable level, considering how much that makes it so much easier to tend to.
Homegrown food is priceless. No better time to do this, in your own backyard and away from people. Getting the sunshine and hearing the birds chirping. Priceless. 😊😎😍😀☺😏
Happy gardening to all, everyone and everywhere.
I was so afraid to start any plant indoors but I took a chance and got some seeds after watching your podcast. After finding out that I wasn’t the only one who was afraid of planting seeds and became encouraged by your comments to the gentleman who wrote in. I actually have greens coming up and I used the little peat cup thingies. I just want to thank you so very much for the encouragement and I love digging in the dirt. Now, I’m going to plant the strawberry seeds that I gently scraped off the skin of a strawberry.
Good job. You're going to get addicted. 😊
I learned more from this single video than I have from the last 1e youtubers combined. Subscribed!
I'm a lifetime gardener and since youtube began I have been watching gardening channels. You, sir, have the VERY BEST advice and teachings on the subject.
sapphireblue222 thank you!
I've been watching since I found your TV program on PBS hete in Memphis (yes I'm pretty old). Still interesting and educational.
Props to the camera person lol! Seriously though, I love watching P. Allen Smith ...always very informative and entertaining.
I can watch these videos all night & day
Tons of useful info squeezed into 1/2 hr. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for all the gardening knowledge you have shared with me. My father, who was our family's great gardener, has passed. And all his great knowledge went with him because I didn't care about all that when I was younger. But now, thank God, I have all of your wonderful videos to teach me what to do and how to have the most plentiful vegetable gardens and beautiful flowerbeds. I know many generations will come to know and love your videos because they are so helpful and informative. Keep up the good work, I'll be waiting and watching for more great videos. Thanks!
A lot of hard work Allen but it is the work you love to do and the best part of your hard work is that you pick it and bring it to the kitchen and cook.😋
Morning Allen, soil building and preparation is vital for good healthy plant and trees. A fact we cannot escape from is mulching. I noticed leaves also work wonders in a box bed, it really helps with loosening the soil. Home gardens have really boomed the past 20 years or so, I think it started as a novelty and then the gardeners realised the value and enjoyment in working with the soil. I have to agree, the every day vegetables taste super good and fresh potatoes out the ground is unbeatable. A good idea to get as much variety from one bed, those peas looked very special to me. Thank you for all the suggestions and inspiration, your videos are excellent to start any person off to try their hand at growing their own. Kind regards, take care.
Thank you. I now have a plan for my raised bed!
You've built some world class soil, it's perfect
being in California where there is a a lot of clay we dont put sand in for drainage because it bonds with the clay where as pumice or volcanic rock doesn't along with the organic material... your soil looks quite gorgeous...
I learned a lot from you, I needed some motivation 🐝
Thanks for the in depth advice!
in his prime. just gorgeous. we cook the chard just like turnip greens. delicious!
Great video as usual. HOWEVER the background music is too loud and distracting
Ken Mason yeah, i don’t have all the project files for some of these videos that are a few years old. Kinda stuck with it. :-/
Mute it and used the close caption.
No worry about the music. My attention dis order is under control today.
Love this.
I worked for your mother when I was in college. She was a fantastic lady. I’ve thought of her often recently. I’ve wondered how she is doing... I enjoy your gardening as well. A true Arkansas treasure. Thanks
I was wondering what that accent was haha thanks - first time viewer
Thanks for the tips, love your videos!
I’m cheap. I’ll cut TP rolls in half, cut slashes in the bottom, and fold those slashes inward. These make the best peat pots. I also use newspaper pots.
Great hint. Will have to try that. Thanks
Craig Carmichael I would like to think so! That people are buying to do something good for the world such as planting. But as it is, it’s not that way. You can use paper towel rolls, though.
2manynegativewaves Shhh. Don’t let out my secret. 😉
As usual, I learn! Thank you.
I was pleasantly surprised to see this face from the past and listened to NO MUSIC cause I can't hear well anyhow! CC works great fer me.......
Wonderful. Now I'm off to plant garlic and potatoes 👍
I’m so glad I found your channel. I have always liked your show on TV 🐓🌱🌷🥬🥗
D Motta glad to have you with us! 💚
Mee too😍🍅
I love these videos!!
Watch them over again, take notes, and plant! Also live visiting Moss Mountain farm!!
Thanks, Allen!
Great information that I can use now. Thank you so much.
Thanks Alan I love your videos your soil is awesome.
I prefer to plant asparagus on a ridge between two furrows, which allows the roots to fall down the sides of the ridge.
Yes. P. Allen Smith. Thank you for making this video. Planting soon. Have my asparagus ready to go into the ground and potatoes too.
Great job, and a video worth watching
Thank you so much - I'm going to save this for next early spring - it's too late in our area now but I'll do it next year~!
Love Love that pea trellis! Those are some great companion plantings. Thank you P. Allen!
You are a good teacher and I love listening to you talk, thank you!
Amazing demonstration excellent video great vegetables being planted your and your soil is a work of art
Thanks for all great tips. I can't wait to start planting here in Indiana. We still have snow on the ground, but soon it will be time.
THAT TRELLIS 😮😍
thank you for saying your zone . that helps us who are newbees who live in the same zone thks again from Tn
I like this video and enjoy your accent. The music is fine for my ears while providing a counterpoint to your drawl.
Good afternoon Allen : today's video was the therapy I need after a long night shift in a dementia unit. Great info for my upcoming garden adventure especially on plant asparagus. Truly appreciate your gardening style ,technique and knowledge. Happy gardening and healthy eating 🌞🍎🥬
We loved gathering asparagus as a kid on ditch banks in the country.
So informative and inspiring!!! God bless you!
Ebonee Rhode Island
Good teaching! Thank you!
Oh my goodness, your soil is just beautiful! I love the idea of diagonal planting in square beds. Aesthetics are important too :)
Thank the workers who work the soil, you know he ain't doing it..lol🤣
So exciting to make plants to get things going this season with your tips! I find it very tough to concentrate on your voice with the continuous music though. You're wonderful information and lovely way of speaking is all we need! : )
Love. Your. Shows
I’d especially love to see the end results of your potatoes. Great video! Thanks!
Joined your videos today. Thank you.
I love your practical tips, thank you.. I have an allotment in the United Kingdom and am new to gardening. All your tips have been noted and I will add them to my spring vegetable planting :)
Same here Sathi, first time gardening and learning so much from him. So happy to find another beginner Nepali gardener living abroad.
Hi
I watch you on P.B.S. Sundays only so glad to find you here. Can't wait to watch all your videos. I am more of a show me person. Thanks Michele PS I am so excited. I am a garden grow nerd.

Perfect info❤️
I knew those were Better Bush Tomato before you even mentioned the name! I used to grow them when I lived in New York. I've been growing heirlooms now, but I think I'll give them a shot again! I have seed leftover but they are probably about 20 years old! I think I'll do a little experiment! Lol.. Thank you Allen! Happy gardening!
Great knowledge ❤️
Basic information, clear correct and accessible- well presented..no tricks no short cuts, just the facts shared with love and experience
So he had a landscaping business, that explains the experience and integrity of theory and practice..expectation and preparation
I love your presentation. Many of my life long techniques are vindicated by the fact that you have success with them too, but also; there are many great new ideas. Your soil is so friable. I have the same sort of clay in Georgia but have used cover crops, manure and compost. The sand sounds like what I need to complete the recipe. Thanks for putting this out for all of us.
Planting daikon or tillage radishes and then tilli g them in will open up large spaces in soil, fill them with organic matter and even kill some neematodes.
So helpful! Thanks
Good video. Fun drone shpts. Classic Seattle!!
Wow Mr. Allen haven't seen you forever. Good to see you again. You always have great videos. I do miss you chicken video's.

Great video!
Jeez. Haven't seen P. Allen in forever. I stopped watching cable tv and haven't connected my antenna back up after we bought our house. Glad I happened upon him today. Nice to see you on here and you are the reason I grow radishes. I forget the episode, but I never heard of cooking radishes or eating their greens until that episode.
Robert M thanks Robert. I hope you subscribed. Big things coming on CZcams channel. We just keep cranking it out. :-)
@@PAllenSmith Oh, I immediately hit the subscribe and notification button. I used to love Saturday(Sunday?) mornings watching your show on PBS with my son. Glad you are still pumping out content. Almost warm enough to plant stuff up where I am. I am always looking for new ideas to use in my garden. I am trying to catch a bunch of bait fish in the ocean and fermenting my own fertilizer as one of my more unique experiments. Thanks for the response and just glad to see you again. I think you must be a relative of Benjamin Button since it looks like you are aging in reverse.
New subscriber here! You got me at "Chard flower arrangement."
Love your garden tips. I am hearing impaired, so I have to use the scripts. Got a kick out of the amount of 'humans' you use to organically fertilize your beds. Laughed so hard I had to keep backing the video up as I had tears in my eyes and couldn't keep up with the captioning. But seriously, these are very helpful! Thanks!
Those crazy captioners struggle with my southern accent sometimes! 😂
Jody Schurman I heard humous
Jody Schurman Time to fire the captioners! Ha ha “Humus” I think is what was said.
Very nice!!!
Greetings across the pond, Allen. You've just won yourself another long-distance follower. Enjoyed the vid and will be searching out some more of yours. Best wishes and try to steer clear of this dreaded virus that threatens us all. - Paul
Martyn Skillings thank you so much! Be sure to ring the bell 🔔. I try to release content weekly.
Thank You for this Awesome, informative video!!! This video has me feeling motivated to get a raised bed garden going at our new house....
Check out no dig techniques if you're new to gardening! Charles Dowding is a wealth of information for the technique 😍
@@Sunshine_Daydream222 Thank You I will check him out...

Hi Allen I'm saying Hi from Sheboygan, Wis just want to say I have enjoyed watching you for years and also am learning new things thank you for your expertise.
Kristine Johnson thank you! 💚
Hi there Alan, Paul gautschis from back to Eden pulls the asparagus off from the crown at the bottom and his asparagus grows back the same year.. Watch his footage and you will see. Great watching your footage. 👍
My 3 yr old apple tree was just hating this Missouri mud. I put it in a huge pot and it took off. Thanks for the pruning tips!
Remember that a potted tree will need potting soil and frequent watering and fertilizer.
Soil Moist® is helpful for potted plants.
Mr Allen thank you for this show I’m a big fan and love to grow veggies and I watch you with my kids on PBS tv back in the days and everything it’s so delicious. This year trying to eat Ital style. Have u heard of ital food? It’s orígenes come from Jamaica. Kinda Rasta kitchen very pure . 👍🙏🏼🌹🥬🙏🏼
Love your video! Thank you so much!! I'm in Little Rock and this will help me get a few things in the ground today for my zone. Do you have a list of what to plant now in addition to the one's you have in the video!? 🥕🥦🍉💚
I’m doing that with garlic tomorrow!! Thankyou
Awesome!
Love this guy. One kewl queen, lol. Hugs Allen.
I know you’re trying to be cool and funny, but don’t mis gender people, please!
I use my big older stalks of swiss chard for vegetable stock.
i love garden
Love this video. Very comprehensive with lots of helpful tips. Thanks Allen!
One question please. I live in zone 9 and wondering if I can plant my seed potatoes now. I use containers for all my produce. Much appreciated!
Garlic coated with some oil and a little salt and cooked on a grill is as good as it gets. The green leaves may be a little burned on the tips but that is good. Covering a spinach planting with clear plastic helps as much as covering carrot plantings.
Very interesting, but it's very difficult to hear over the music.
How can you pick the peas without walking on the lettuce and spinach? I suppose you could lay down stepping stones along both sides of your diagonal fence, but your design would not be best use of a nice, fluffy raised bed. I plant peas no further than a comfortable arm's reach from the path.
Zone 7...so exciting...I'm in Zone 7
Nice
Thank you so much for this video it was so helpful! Question for you - what brand of greenhouse do you have? I’m looking to buy one this year.
Thanks for sharing, my husband was the gardener. He died of Cancer 4 years ago. so I am working his 30'x 50' garden area with a greenhouse in the middle. I designed it the way he wanted it. But he had the green thumb. I need all the help I can get. Want to get one of those dribbler. If I can't afford rasied bed,s can I continue to do row planting with a mulch top?
Hi Linda. I'm sorry to hear about your husband. You have a nice size garden. Raised bed is for lead contaminate soil & hiding place for slugs, beside the cost. Happy gardening.
Very heap full. 🙏🏻🥬
New here are you by chance kin to any Rhoades? You sure look like family. Love this video. Clear instructions, information and beautiful garden!
Brianne Morna thank you. Not that I’m aware of!
I first want to say that I have been following you from the very beginning!! My question is, can I do the same for growing sweet potatoes the same way as what you were showing for potatoes? Thank you for making this video! I wish you a great day!
PS: I’ve never grown potatoes before, but I love sweet potatoes better.
Wish I could find that nice double willow fence ...and have you noticed how much nicer garden supports and covers are in the UK?
I'm proud of you Paul! It looks like you live in poverty and so I think it's really neat that you take time out to teach us 'newbies' how to start & design our gardens! Thanks again!
How does it look like he lives in poverty? He's responsible for this wonderful estate. The grounds seem an ideal environment to be maintaining, doing lectures & teaching garxening.
@@cherylanderson3340 It's called satire or sarcasm Cheryl And just because you see a big beautiful estate doesn't mean Paul lives there...uh...maybe he has a nest up in the loft of an implement barn on the edge of the property...?
@@boboala1 I didn't state that I know where he lives, merely that I didn't get why he seemed impoverished to you, so guess I missed the sarcasm.
@@boboala1Actually, I know he doesn't live there. He's shown his own gardens. I took exception to this: "I'm proud of you Paul! It looks like you live in poverty... " Why would you say this?
Hello! Absolutely loved the video and the ideas. I’m guessing this is sometime before spring. Can you tell us give or take the months that you did this in your zone 7 climate? Thank you!
Love all your ideas here, and wish i could start on these projects too. However, here in Ontario we are still under a blanket of snow, so planning my new raised garden beds is taking up my time instead. I am wondering if you have done any trials with your beds for digging vs no dig beds? I have watched several videos from Charles Dowding in the U.K. and it seems to make a huge difference. The idea is that with no dig that the macchorizal threads don't get broken from digging down, so the plant health, size etc is affected in a positive direction. Interested in your thoughts.
I seen a video of you getting eggs ready for incubation and how you cleaned thim for it but I cant find it to watch again so can you put up a video for this. Thanks
❤️❤️
Love this and all your videos and what I've seen on TV. I'm not just cheep I'm trying to live in poverty which is a big adjustment. Hurt my back very badly and need surgery. I have lots of questions but don't want to make a long comment especially in a public forum. Anyway 1 of my questions is do you happen to have a tutorial on how to make that awesome trellis? I happen to live in Ohio zone 6. And I've always heard not to plant outside until mother's day? Which is a long time from now so I don't know what I can start? As you can tell I'm a beginner and not real sure what I can do with my back being so bad. Thank you for the great video!
Nice video! Please tell me how you made the trellis! A perfect tool!
where can I buy the asparagus crowns? Thank you for your videos. Learning so much.
This video is wonderful! You are so relaxed and make it seem so easy! Can't wait to get started!
Megan Zirkle thank you Megan! 💚 Glad you could get past the music (apparently). 🎶 lol
@@PAllenSmith It didn't bother me. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and very happy that you replied, not many channel creators do so. You made my day! Blessings to you! 🙏💛🌿
💜
Found this so informative and instructive for a beginner. Only wish the music was not so loud...just couldn't hear you.
That's such a pretty and natural looking trellis! Where did u get it at?
I love your videos their very informative . question we went to a nursery the other day and bought some seedlings ( tomatoes) they told me tomatoes don't like to be transplant.so once I transfer my seedlings to a pot is that where they need to stay?
As long as it’s still an immature plant it should be fine. 🍅👍🏼
Nice to see you again. Did you weave that first trellis?
Where can I purchase the little net covered disks to start my tomato seedlings? Thank you for your videos. They are so helpful and informative.
I've seen them in the garden section in Walmart here in the states, but any home and/or garden store should carry them.
