- Welcome to the second video in our new EastWest Academy series, our FREE tutorial series that teaches you how to produce music using our award-winning virtual instruments. In this series, we cover every aspect of music production from beginning to end while addressing a lot of the questions that you've had for us on our CZcams and other social media channels in the process.
In this session, we'll be covering some of the general approaches to writing a soundtrack, including thematic scoring, using nontraditional themes that rely more on color and sound design rather than melodies, and of course, textual scoring that doesn't make use of any recurring theme at all. This video is also going to serve as an introduction to orchestration and hybrid composing, but we'll also have videos dedicated entirely to those subjects as well in the future.
The best way to get instant access to all of the virtual instruments discussed in this series is with a ComposerCloud+ subscription. Find out more: www.soundsonline.com/composer...

This composer/producer/…/ or whatever is a genius in what he does. Incredible, mind-blowing, highest quality in every respect. Yes, and East West sound software makes it possible. I’m overwhelmed what great people are out there to create all this all on the highest level! Congrats to all involved! 👍🏻💪🏻👏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Always when I’m stuck on my own world I come here and get inspired by Ryan Thomas.
Thank you East West for providing these sounds and this knowledge through this great artist to us.
This guy is really good, this library is heaven sent.
To became an East West member was just the best decision ever. You guys are always fantastic! Thank you for all the invaluable material
It's been a joy watching this channel grow over the years. The turtorials are always great. Even if I don't learn anything new, it's still interesting listening to Ryan. Great job!
Whenever I am stucked, and can't think of new musical ideas, I just go back here and watch Ryan Thomas. His enthusiasm is very influential, jovial and encouraging. Thanks a lot for your tutorials.
This series is so good. I can't wait for the next one.
I completely agree!!
You are inspiring! Thank you so much for all the value that you provide. Your enthusiasm and passions is contagious! Much love.
Thank you for this series! I have been missing this from EW, now I am starting to feel ”at home” with Opus and the libraries.
This tutorial series is so useful, it's mindboggling. Can't wait to dive into my DAW right now. I've been struggling trying to figure out how to even use Opus but now I think I can really make some great stuff. Keep these coming!
This is so helpful. Thank you Ryan.
Thank you very much Ryan for these suggestions I will get to work immediately😄👍
Thank You Very Much!
🙂🙏
very good content, i appreciate it very much! believe that people need more videos like this
Awesome - you make it seem to easy - we know it's not [always] especially when doing more uniqueness yet opus and the vast library - whoa what a lot of creativity to work with!
I love this. I just got the cloud. I'm pretty much a beginner and I wouldn't mind a series where y'all go from scratch and show each process step-by-step.From a blank page to a finished one. Maybe too much to ask, but that'd be cool.
Thank you for this! A lot to take in, but I see now I am drawn to textural scoring!
This is freaking Awesome 👌
Wow, you had me fighting back tears at the 12 minute mark. Incredible.
Brilliant, I need more videos like this.
hi Ryan, i love the way you explain the building blocks of orchestral soundtrack scores, cant wait for the next one, cheers mate
This is fabulous! Makes me want to dive into E/W more... thank you - Ryan is amazing at his craft and explains it well. Thanks again.
I'm such a sponge, soaking all this up! Ryan is the best.
Thank you for another great video, Ryan. You are not only a brilliant composer but you also explain stuff in a very clear way. Your videos provide tons of inspiration. Thanks! EastWest rocks!
What incredible music 👌👌👌
super video series ! thank you very helpful !😃
Very well done! You are very skilled.
This is a great and very inspiring video! Thank you very much, I found it very useful!
Thank You Very Much Sir!
🙂🙏
Invaluable info at its best... Thanks Heaps Ryan....Really adore your trainings...🤓👍🏅
One thing I would like to see from this channel, which sounds like it's coming down the line which makes me super happy, is the production side of the process of scoring. Getting out-of-the-box sounds to feel like they're actually part of a film score or video game score. The intricacies of finding just the right reverb, compression, side chains, etc. I know what they all are. And I've tried messing around with them. But no matter what I do I can't get the EW libraries to sound the way they do in your videos. They sound either too dry, or start sounding like they're all drowning in reverb with other imbalances here and there making it all sound very amateur. The sounds out of the box in EW are great. But they don't sound the same as in your video without some heavy processing and production work after the music is in the project. So that's what I'd like to see you guys cover. The production work AFTER the music.
This man is a genius
Amazing Tutorials!
Great work. Useful as always, keep it up.
keep making these kind of videos"!!! I really love them and actually taking too much notes :) thanks! also Composer cloud sub here!
I need a sampled Ryan VST on my computer.
EW deserves every penny..
East West, Best service, Heavyocity. ENOUGH SAID.
Wow! to this video and Wow! to your outstanding talent. 🙏
Very nice 🎉
Ryan has a good blend of excitement and information in his presentation. Thats a hard thing to do when you've been doing it for so long, but like Richard Attenborough, he has a love for the world that is music composition and sample libraries. I decided to take the plunge after buying several other orchestral libraries, purely because I wanted to have access everything. The cloud+ deal is great, especially on Black Friday :)
Ryan is such an inspiring master of his craft! It's always a pleasure to watch him talk about the composition process! Thank you EastWest for this series 🙏
Bravissimo Ryan Thomas!!
We need part 3.
Coming soon!
Love these tutorials, FANTASTIC JOB. really helps me see how much potential these libraries have!! Im still super new to orchestration and orchesteal music production in general...so these videos really help me on my journey of learning. Really excites about the fantasy orchestral libraries. My channel is mainly about celtic music, so these instruments will be super useful! 👌. P s....this music is stunningly beautiful.
I see you are using the Steinway. I find the Bechstein to be breathtaking.
Well, it seems that when I watched the first video, I heard something from the third Indiana Jones movie. And looking at the video, I realized that my associations were correct. Thank you for excellent explanations, a friendly format, and for the overall helpful work! 😍
Excellent Video. Thanks so much. I'm curious which you're using for the rhythmic pulse under the hybrid textural score section. These videos are wonderful. Thank you again.
Thank you so much, Ryan! Great video as usual! When are the next episodes of EW Academy going to come out? Can't wait to learn more!
Where to start? ... Jamming!, on keys of course. I'm no pianist (guitar, mando, trombone). I will never likely call myself one, not in the way myself a picker would regard even a novice key devotee. Also not even here for orchestral composition, but electronic/dance. I can pick up a guitar and lose myself in a fruitful hour of nothing in particular. Or countless hours in my DAW just thumbing thru the overwhelming instrument variety available to me. Workflow? HA. But once I toyed enough to make some one handed arpeggios and relatable chords, BOOM. Now I begin the same, but play a min. couple measures of every sound based on it's style. Inspiration comes QUICKLY as I fall for a line I cant refuse. This dictates what my head inserts next 100%. Then I can section hunt for the treatment, or tease out the theme, and am beginning to make the music I would want to hear. Step 1 - Play Keyboard! Articulate YOU. I lost many years trying to articulate mouse clicks. With amazing patches and a head-down jam, step two will probably hunt you down.
Excellent academy.will the series continue ?
This series definitely needs to be continued. Hopefully very soon? (It's been almost half a year 😕)
I also hope you're going to include the mixing as well as effects used in a more detailed way. (for example: I read "String Doubler" on one of the busses - erm how??)
More episodes coming soon!
Great intro! Will there be more?
Is there a way to download your sample projects?
How do you decide which instruments to use for which parts?
How did you do the strings ?
My new album Lovamor 对人民 (something like Lovamor to the people) is full of East West sounds! The idea here is to merge the different languages of the world, in this case 3, English, Portuguese and Chinese. Also my new movie Depois é Nunca (Later is Too Late) was awarded with a Honor Mention at the London Rocks International Film Festival. Thank you guys!!!!
A quick question if you can provide an answer? I just download the space 2 reverb and my question is : does space reverb the one available in most EW instruments or it's a complete different thing?
Are there more installments planned? How often$
Thanks.
So how does one record as they play like the screen he shows?
So how often will we see new chapters in this interesting series?
More coming soon!
why only 2 episodes??
Episode 3 drops tomorrow!
i have the top tier composers cloud. where the hell is planetary in Spaces 2 ????? I have used spaces for years, I have never seen a planetary preset, nor is there one in there now (maybe im blind though). I just looked.
No more episodes? It's been a while.
More episodes coming soon!
@@EWQLTutorials That's reassuring. Thanks for the confirmation 😊
Is this Opus Orchst?
Yes
Was this series abandoned? It was off to a good start.
Next episode drops tomorrow!
