Excellent review, Alex. Thank you for all the details describing the differences between these two models. I’m excited about the 2.0L Supra. I’m 69 and I have no need for any sports car with more than 250 hp, especially on city/suburban routes and such a lightweight car. I’m sure I can have lots of fun with this car, and the projected price of car in the $40s is very attractive too. Do I care that this model isn’t crazy enough? Hell no. I’d rather have the safety of this model over the 3.0L any day. Again, thank you for this review. It was extremely helpful.
Just bought a 2.0. It’s a true driver’s car, sublime in the back canyons and plenty quick on the street. This car is a pure joy. In real life it gets nothing but positive reactions from car guys to the average joe who is intrigued and wants to know what it is.
I love the camera work in this video! Nice to have it move around while you give a tour of the cars.
Meanwhile in Europe the Z4 has a 195 hp engine but starts at $48k.
Meanwhile in the Philippines, we only get the GR Supra with the 3.0L engine & it costs almost US$100,000 when converted from PHP.
Alex is the best! I always look forward to his detailed reviews. Thank you!!!
While my new Rav4 Hybrid checks all my boxes, I thoroughly appreciate your reviews - honest, relevant, and well presented! Best wishes to you and yours.
Alex, you are best all-around car/truck reviewer on CZcams!!
The 2.0 ed. Is a sweet ride for driver over racer buyer. The conventional suspension and 50/50 wgt. Is a full size fast Miata and that's superb.
They should have offered a manual in 4cyl even tho I love the 8sp in my 2020.
BMW tends to underrate their engines. I'd imagine both of these engines are more powerful than rated.
Amazing rear trunk forward camera angle, what equipment did you use for this?
Where's the manual trans in the 4 cyl? That would make it more special, less BMW. I know, I know, shared parts.
Good question. My econobox has a manual, I can't imagine a sports car without one.
they are just being lazy they could easily restrict it to1000-2000 preorders, just lazy in fact the upcoming frs/brz manual slightly modified or bmw's should easily work.
heck even the corolla can be had with a manual, but not their sports car.
the manual is about more than 0-60 launch control, it is about man/machine interaction and driving pleasure that no auto can come close too, and they should put a manual handbrake in there too, this is one sports car where it's not too fast so you can actually use all of it's power/handling at legal speeds, or most of it and never have to take it to the track.
Hi Alex, could you compare the q60 RS vs 3.0 supra
I don't understand why he keeps on saying that they look identical while one is yellow the other is silver ...
The view from your drive way is Super!
Forget the Supra, your property is beautiful. Love the (morning?) fog
But is the lumbar support powered in the 2 liter model?
Great video!! I think I would personally choose the i6 version. Really good comparison though- well done.
Hey Alex, I'd really appreciate the metrics conversion somewhere on the screen and I'm sure you have a lot of international viewers as well.
I’m 72 and I like the overall dynamics of the 4 cylinder model and price. We own Lexus RXs and have driven various Acura models. Thanks for your great reviews!
that new inline 6 is something else, i had a loaner x5 with that engine. between the two i would go with the 3.0 and keep it mostly stock. going with the 2.0 and doing a LS engine swap might be something to look into but that would be for a project car.
how is the front legroom?
What about wind noise problem when windows open?
We'll get a manual soon, you can bet on it. But the big question is how will the upcoming GR86 stack up against the 4cyl. Supra?
Dear Alex,
If you hang a bag of cement off the rear bumper and the front, the F:R weight distribution may not change much, but the handling would change quite a bit.
Enjoyed your very detailed comparision between the two models.
@7:07 they've got the same license plates?
i want to know more about the 4 speaker vs 12
Did they ever get around to fixing that darn wind buffeting? Seems like it'd be an easy fix
So maybe get the 2.0 and do an LS swap?
Missing the manual. It is getting harder and harder to find manual in sportscars. Even Porsche only offers them in the Cayman/Boxter and the 911 S and Targa. The latter they have stopped building for 2020; why, who knows? Most of the fun with sports cars is the manual. Yes, the PDK's and paddles are fast, but what's the fun, if you can't throw the gear and use it to shape the driving behavior?
In the vein of keeping it practical and impractical at the same time, they should offer it with a single, center mounted rear seat! Thanks for another excellently done video Alex. 🍻 stay safe.
Slight pet peeve- rearward weight bias is more ideal. More grip under acceleration, equal load on all 4 tires under braking.
Anyway I told myself I would avoid a turbo 4 for as long as possible but the Supra 2.0T looks tasty. Waiting to see what's up with the new Z though
Alex, spot on as usual. I'd hoped the 4-pot would be the more attractive "dance partner". I'm hoping the price is a more agreeable partner as well. A ? for you. Do you think this Supra carries over any DNA from the old E86 Z4M Coupe? Keep on keepin' on!
Looking forward to this. Thank you!
IMO a non-turbo I6 would be a better engine choice for the low end Supra. I’d bet the cost would be similar, but the sound and driving feel would be better. Worse for EPA testing though. Not sure if removing the turbo from the B series engine would work well though since it was designed from the start with turbo charging in every variant. The old M52 2.8L in my E36 is such a great engine, and I’d imagine BMW could delivery something great in 2020 for NA fans.
Are there any informative articles or videos on how/if the new Supra will be as reliable as other Toyotas? I know too many people who have had terrible reliability with their BMW's (and is also evidenced by BMW owners that report to CR) and their engines.
What do you mean by terrible reliability? It's not like you see them falling out of the sky, people are still driving, maintaining and repairing them.
I beg to differ. Pretty much all German cars are unreliable. The gimmick is that because they are also so overpriced, german car customers have money so they just pay the dealerships to fix them. If you want to know real pain, own a german car past the warranty.
I’m still having issues with my 2010 335i BMW , electronic issues mostly and very expensive for example the ABS system, charge pipe cracked, replaced rotors and brakes , injectors, coils etc
It has 40,000 miles now
I like the Supra but I don’t think I’ll buy it
Yeah, a major part of German car "longevity," is that the richer owners can just throw money at the problems.
The people I know (normal middle-class and lower folks) that saved and bought into the German car hype either have had to sell their cars, trade them in, or just drive a car with electrical issues and leaks.
Toyota made Subaru add extra injectors that would intermittently wash the valves to prevent carbon build-up that plagues direct injection engines on the 86 and BRZ. I haven't heard anything about this BMW engine being given any Toyota ingenuity to keep it more reliable than any other unreliable German engine.
4.9 sec 0-60 is nothing to scoff at, that turbo 2.0 is perfect for a fun zippy car. Also just a stage 1 tune can drop that 0-60 to mid 4s and possibly low 13s to high 12s in the 1/4 mile
Those strut bars look like they were just cut and drilled at home depot.
I'm sure you'll be able to buy aftermarket carbon fiber replacements that save 2.7 grams and increase rigidity by .004% for only a couple of grand if you prefer.
Ha! I was thinking the exact same thing. Cut on chop saw, flatten ends of tubes, drill holes: Done. Toyota will probably sell you them for $200.
Alex. Turbo lag vs Turbo threshold. Go!
While the radio screen is VERY low lighted and heavy window noise when down, what SHOCKED me was NO heated seats available in he lower model, WTF, even the brz and 86 have tht standard at 20,000....LOL!
I'm not a stickler for things like the partnership with BMW or that it has to have an inline 6. So they seem like fine vehicles, but I would either get something like a Golf R, Civic Type R vs. the supra 2.0 or get a Camaro, Mustang over the 3.0
This pricepoint is hard. For the 3.0L supra, do i get it or the new corvette? For the 2.0L price point, do you go civic type R with LSD and 2 more doors with 2 more passengers and more hp.
@@YusufGinnah C8 is an amazing car but midengine is brand new territory for GM, who has total shit service- notoriously the worst of all "american" manufacturers. in America, everyone and their mom has corvettes- they're very common here. once we get past this initial phase of the C8 being pricegouged and backordered, there will be many out there, just like all the other corvettes. C8 is probably the best bang for your buck overall sportscar out there- its the world's cheapest supercar... which is a good thing, I think, but could also be a bad thing, depending on how it proves out over time (quality issues, mass production, GM being GM). The Corvette is $20k more than a similarly equipped Supra... no one is buying an 1LT at 60k as it comes with absolutely nothing; people will be buying at least the 2LT for 68k. You want the performance suspension and dampers with electronic calibration and michellin pilot sport run flats, and better cooling? That's another $6k. The Supra already comes with all of that at $54k and now the Corvette is $74k. GM significantly strips down the Corvette to advertise a "low starting price" of $60k. That said, the Supra handles like a dream and competes with $100k Porsches (the Porsche is still a better sportscar though). A Supra will turn more heads than a corvette, at least here in the US where we see vettes every single day. I haven't driven a C8 yet, but the Supra feels much better than a C6 or C7.
Nice review Alex... If the price is right at arround $40k for the 2.0L it's gonna be a winner hands down! The 3.0L is amazing, but at arround $70k it's too expensive and too close of the SuperMuscle basic Camaro ZL1, Corvette C8 or even a Mustang GT500.
What about expected reliability for the Supra?
Is that a huge concern? I'm sure it'll be about the same as current BMW's which isnt terrible, so I'd be happy to have such a fun vehicle at the partial detriment of a few extra hours here or there in maintenance or repairs way down the line.
@@rightlanehog3151 well there's a ton of them voiding their warranties so reliability isn't too muvh of their concern.
Wouldn’t a Toyota V6 turbo be the engine for the Lotus(?).
I agree with Alex, this car looks better in person. I recall Savage Geese making the statement that with the windows down, the wind buffeting is so severe that it's a deal killer. For the money, the new Corvette C8 is superior in performance but then you won't get the same quality interior, refinement and build quality (panel gaps). Who would get this car? A well to do person that could afford a toy like this because it is simply a small European sports car ideal for short distances. Lease one of you can afford it.
I wish if this model year had an optional manual trans ...that's the real fun than some robot shifting
I will take the Lexus RC any day! I have own one for two years and love it.
The 4 cylinder Supra is the new Celica.
That’s the smallest hatch opening ever seen. Can you fit a luggage case in it? Can you fit a spare tire in it?
@1g2002541
👍🏼
I thought BMW did away with the spare tires a while ago...
And fit them with 'run-flat' rubber?
Either way, it does look impractical and shallow.👍🏼
tire plug kit beats a spare tire the overwhelming majority of the time and it weighs nothing/takes up no space.. in the highly unlikely event you have a total blowout, you call for a tow truck- its a sports car.
No manual transmission on the 4 banger? Shame on you BMW.
Joseph...No surprise though. They don't offer the manual on the 3 Series with this engine either. Wish they did!
@Joseph Romano
I thought it was a given that the 4cyl Zupra would be 6 forward...?
Oh well...😔
Put these engines in a brand new crossover/SUV model so Toyota can sell more models so we can get more sports cars.
I really want to like the new supra but it's the partnership with BMW that I can't let go.
Great video but its not a different motor. Its the same as the 2020. Its just 2 tweaks they'd with the exhaust and tuning i think it was. But definitely the exhaust was changed.
BMW considers it a different engine. The Supra had the B58B30C before and now it has a B58M30O1
@@AAutoBuyersGuide
Oh ok. I was watching a few other videos, they all said it was the same but I'm assuming they didn't dig that deep. But I definitely like 👍 your review. I apologize if I was wrong about the motor and please don't think i was trying to diss your video. I'm not at all.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide also yes your completely right. The videos I was watching was from a while ago. They are a different engine. Thats gotta piss ppl off lol. Not that its the biggest deal but it would kinda upset me.
It is still a B series engine though. Not sure how many changes would be made, but it is the same architecture BMW uses for almost all of their cars. At this point the B series has been in production for at least six years, which is a good thing as an older engine platform will have more of its problems sorted.
A great video, Alex is the best! I love this car no matter if it is a Toyota, BMW or even a Lada for that matter! I'd have the 6 cylinder option myself if I were to buy one of these two though. One problem I would have is getting in and out of the thing, I may be just too tall for this car! lol
Wilfred Norman Lol, what did you expect, size wise? You picked a tiny car!
@@daytonasayswhat9333 Yup, it is tiny, but I guess it's not Miata territory though! As for what I would buy? That would be a Challenger Hellcat! I can fit in that thing! lol
2021 and no android auto, OMG!
@@MrMrLck yeah but phone integration should count as basic feature, still BMW hasn't figured out how to add Android Auto yet.
Get an iPhone, they last longer with a minimum of 5 years update support, and significantly higher resale value. It doesn't even have to break the bank the new iPhone SE is $400 and as far as performance goes it smokes any android phone with its A13 chipset.
The word Supra should not be associated with a 4 cylinder that makes less than 300 horsepower in 2020. I think this just further dilutes whatever is left of the Supra nameplate.
That turbo-4 would, however, be great in a future 86/BRZ.
Bet when they dyno it, it is 300 hp or right at it. Itll be underrated like the other car
I think the 2.0 should be more fun on public roads and less dangerous to your driver's license :-)
with auto and that price.....why wouldnt you get a faster model 3?......
Its a gas car vs a electric. Stop comparing apples vs oranges.
I wish it is more Toyota and comes with safety features standard
What about a middle of the road, non turbo inline 6? That might be the perfect goldilocks version.
Stop hating. Like what Alex says, I rather have a new Supra, than NO Supra at all. Sports car are just not as profitable for manufacturers to build from the ground up. I would get a 2.0T, I plan to use it as a GT and not a track machine.
I like the look of the Supra, I don't mind that it is co-developed. 2 door coupes are my favorite kinda of vehicle type, so the more the better I4 (cheaper) and I6 (expensive). Sadly I am a die-hard stick guy, wish they at least had a 6-7 speed manual option. So I probably won't buy it but im still glad its made
I wish it was an all natural v6, instead of a turbo 4.
even if it added 100 pounds and was a little slower off the line.
we have to many turbos on the market to cheat the epa test. they rob us of pure linear driving and cost more to maintain and repair.
Budget Boost DIY I’d also much prefer a turbo 4 cyl because it’ll respond to tuning better. Also the B48 sounds straight nasty with just a resonator and muffler delete🔥
140k miles on my F150 twinturbo v6 ecoboost and still waiting about that "more to maintain and repair" you speak of. I think a lot of people just fear monger from what they heard about vehicles in the 80s/90s.
Is the Civic Type R "truly a Japanese performance vehicle?" It's a European joint venture, and made in England!
@@rightlanehog3151 As opposed to what? Besides, is the Ford Focus ST/RS truly an American performance vehicle? It's was designed/engineered & made in Germany, for that market, tuned for racing there. Heck, it's made in a Ford factory.
@@amazoidal The last I heard was (most logically) to their existing Civic facilities in Indiana, Ohio or Ontario, Canada.
Maybe they should call the 2.0L one a Celica.
Toyota and Honda R lost me stealerdhips pushing for over msrp. Bought suv for last year at big discount . Let’s see what happens this year if economic holds well
Better balanced than a Porsche cayman?
The wheels is the differentiator, 19 vs 18 and different design...🤔😏
No Android Auto, a big middle finger for all Android users.
You have two Supras in your (one) driveway. What am I doing wrong with my life?!
Maybe the 4 cyl will get some of the buyers that would have looked at the 86 if they 86 the 86
$40k for a 4cyl Supra or V8 Mustang
🤔🤔🤔
4 banger Stinger vs 4 banger Supra. I think Stinger might take it on the drag strip but the track definitely the Supra.
The idea of Lexus partnering with BMW worries me. Lexus is known for quality and reliability. BMW makes some fantastic cars, but they don’t have a great reputation for holding up over time.
Lexus had noting to do with this. It was Toyotas idea to do this.
There are internet rumors about the next gen Lexus IS featuring a BMW in-line 6.
Sam Serr I’ve heard that too. Let’s just hope that Toyota makes BMW better, rather than let it turn into a Fiat-Chrysler or Nissan-Renault situation
This had so much potential but the fact Toyota copied the German's policy of everything being an option package along with the lack of Android auto really soil this otherwise stunning car for me... Plus it would be nice if Toyota somehow assured costumers that those BMW engines and electronics went through Toyota's stricter quality control before they put them in the Supra because the allure of the original Supra was performance AND reliability.
2.0 > 3.0
In everyday roads.
Less nose heavy, much better MPG, “FAST” enough.
Side mirrors are a different color.
What they really need to do is put naturally aspirated V6 or V8 Toyota made power trains in these.
2.0 for me.
They should have got rid of those stupid fake vents for the 2L model.
Yes, I’d rather just not have the Supra at all. How can you make an attempt at a re-vamp of one of the most iconic sports cars ever and make it a “shared project” with another car manufacturer; thus effectively making basically two of the same car?
He said "moist".
if i had the money i'd prefer the 2.0
A turbocharged 2 liter 4 cylinder? That sounds like a perfect fit... ...for the 86. A few years from now when they discontinue their sports cars due to low sales, they’ll forget about these poor decisions. There’s a lot of technology and innovation. I worry the marketing and development folks or whoever may lose most of their potential customers chasing Porsche. I hope I’m wrong, but we’ll see.
Porsche makes great cars. That said, I feel like they all have the same bland look they've had since time immemorial. Yeah, the 911 is a classic and I think holds that well, but visually the boxster/cayman are hard to get excited about. I understand that's their primary demographic, old guys who can afford and want their timeless, unchanging cars. Setting aside the fact that you need to drop 15-20k extra just to get a Porsche with some modern features you would have expected closer to the base price, they all look the same. Germans are very hard headed, but I think Porsche would do well to think about giving their individual vehicle lines more unique characterization instead of such subtle differences. Yes, I know they get some guy with a German accent spewing pages of the subtle nuisances on each model's visuals, but unless you're a hardcore Porsche fan, they all look the same.
I think I would get an 86 because it has a stick shift and it's a Japanese car
I think this is priced to high. For under 50k you can get a camaro 2ss 1le. Which would destroy the supra
It's a BMW underneath and the numbers are the numbers, no reason not to compare it to certain models because it's badged as a Toyota.
Rather not have it.. specially when Toyota have Lexus RC,or the LC platform
MJ DGI agreed. If it was based off the RC or LC, it would be a hot seller
@@naveenthemachine no it'd be in the same position as them both not selling well and being too heavy.
If i was in the market for a NEW sports car i would rather opt for a 2019 C7 Stingray... for about $52k you get a 455 hp 1LT trim level, 7 speed manual !! Dependability is amazing for the C7... GM pulled out the big design guns, from what I’ve read and seen there aren’t any issues with the C7... Just maintain it (synthetic oil changes, etc.) and it will last forever. Conversely this new Supra is a BMW in sheep’s clothing ... yes their engines are great and reliable, its all the plastic crap and electronic shit that will bankrupt you faster than COVID 19... I know from experience i bought a high mileage 2013 X5 and within 8 LONG months i had $2,500 in repairs maintenance, front end work, leaking rear differential and frozen door lock. Traded that piece of crap in for my 2013 LExus ES350, best car I’ve ever owned...
Now i never buy a NEW car (last one was 20 years ago, a 2000 VW Passat wagon, 5 speed manual) , so i would rather get a 2016 C7 Stingray with 1LT, 7 speed manual for about $32-$36k depending on mileage/condition. a low mileage (15k) in great condition will be in the upper 30’s, but this would be my choice ! In fact, when I retire in about 4 years ill be going for a 2016 C7 Stingray like i mentioned above. Best bang for the buck (besides a C6 Z06).
the manager of Walmart reviews cars?
Camera man is making me feel like a stumbling drunk. All over the place
2:59 The most Stupid statement made by a Company: Toyota was FORCED to use BMW engines because its own engine couldn’t fit the Supra platform...so who made that platform ??
It doesn't matter. Both BMW and Toyota have said that without eachother working together that the Supra wouldn't get built and neither would the Z4 and i like both cars....stop bitching!!
@@daytonasayswhat9333 are you sure you wouldn't rather have either? People like you love drama and bitching over absolutely nothing.
çomeon Toyota, even the corolla has a great manual, not up to Honda's or Mazda's quality, but still very good.
This is just ridiculous?
Just make 10-20% total, there are manual manuals that can handel the 4 cyclinder from BMW, Honda, VW< Porsche, or custom made, or even an upgraded BRZ/FRS unit.
Total fail.
Aside from that I love it, it's just about $5-$8000 to expensive.
Oh my gosh, that I6 is phenomenal - that sound is outstanding! So much more pleasant than nearly all of the V6s out there. H6 and I6 engines just have such charismatic sounds, love it!
It seems you’ve never heard a honda cbx with an aftermarket exhaust
I haven’t heard the QV yet, just it’s much, much tamer four popper cousin, and yes, I have heard the F-Type, but I’m still partial to Jaguar’s classic inline-6 engines as well. They’re far more charismatic and definitely more lively.
