I ADORE the idea of a Boy Scout ranger who is only barely legally allowed to be roaming around with the party and are desperate to collect all their badges, it could make for such a unique character with very specific and memorable quirks. “Do you think this qualifies me for my Treasure Hunting Badge even though we weren’t really hunting for it?” “You’ll okay if I kill you so I can get my Resurrection Badge, right?” “I really need to save up my money so I can buy an artifact and get my Destroyed a Magical Item badge”

I feel like something people need to keep in mind is that with Modern D&D, there's a lot to consider before you can even bring it to the table, like, you have two options, Magic doesn't exist in high amounts for the public, or, Magic is everywhere, because if Magic is Low Fantasy, then half casters or Artificer would be more common
but even a small amount of real and true Magic would absolutely and irrevocably change our society in its development, because even with the existence of cantrips, lighters and the like become worthless, because cantrips aren't typically presented as something hard to learn, stuff like that
is Magic a public secret? the only signs of such being biological quirks like Dragonborn and Elves? do Dragons still exist? Have Trolls been scripted as soldiers? are Changelings spies?
Every society is a battle for resources, so learning to use the ones they have is a big move, this includes magic and magical creatures, like, Magic being common would even affect the lowly farmer with Plant Growth

I feel like unless you're a dedicated writer, the amount of consideration needed to rewrite societies like that is often too much for DMs to handle. Even in classic DnD, magic should have heavily advanced the state of the world much faster compared to ours.

One of my go-to DnD settings is a modern college town where the players can access a magical otherworld: the collective unconscious. There, they find Dread Domains, the manifestations of corrupt institutions, and must defeat the shadows of the evil Dark Lords to break their supernatural control over said institutions. It's basically Persona 5 x Van Richton's Guide: The Mists Over Corvishire

One of the best places to look for modern setting characters is the Dresden Files novels. Form a party with a Private Eye Wizard, a Dad Jeans Paladin, a Sex Addict Vampire Rogue, a Ghost Whisperer Author Bard, and a Medical Examiner named Butters who has no class features but was created by the DM because no one took computers as a tool proficiency.

with modern specializations, I imagine multiclassing for specific careers is not just a good idea but a necessity.
Barbarian bard - motivational speaker and rockstars, you want to rile someone up, you pull them in with charisma like a bard, then you pump them up by activating rage.
Bard Artificer - industrial designer, architect, basically all cars, buildings, and UIs are going to be made by the bard artificer
Artificer Fighter/Monk - "the skilled blue collar" probably the most in demand class combo. since this is the best class for skilled labor, they have a lot of artificer's skill with building stuff but their higher physical ability means they can work a lot more demanding physical labor
Druid Fighter - "the skilled farmer" the 2nd most in demand class, this is the "large scale farm" defait
Barbarian Wizard - the modern day "rage mage" aka. the "guy you call when you need things done ASAP and bureaucracy is in the way".

My warlock pact had you as the unlucky soul who made a deal with an otherworldly megacorp and got a lot of power for it at the quite literal expense of an insurmountable amount of debt that gets added to every time you use their magic. The more money you make the more they value you and give you more power of course with the promise that once you've paid off your debt you get to keep your powers (spoilers you could never reasonably pay it off)

Once it lands a being that resembles a Middle Aged Human man with a 5 day unshaven face of light brown and white whiskers shortish brown hair thin and lanky arms covered in what looks like grease and oil stains an off white sleeveless tunic of a strange make with an odd stain or two Emerges with a stretch and yawn slack jawed, dark baggy eyes and an ethereal cloud where legs would normally be. Luckily comunity has done lot's of work to acomidate thise themes if one wishes to go bit deeper than just reskin. Like 'Modern Handbook v3.0' by AeronDrake if you want to do modern day. And best of all it is a free in depth reasorce made entierly by comunity for comunity.
Even if dnd is not the best system for it out of the box it is not incapable to go exotic. Really it can acomedate any setting as long as DM is intedning to go somwhat RP and dowtime loose and Combat strict. @d4n737 Před rokem

@@piens51 Honestly this is just a mentality thing, but why do you now want to play anything new? It's actually BAD that DnD has a monopoly on everything. One brand having a monopoly in any field is bad for the business. You want an "Everything simulator"? Play FATEcore. It's kinda easy to clown on people who modify the Dragons to make it fit where it doesnt belong. You want a setting that's a candy land? Sure. Dark fantasy, high fantasy, sky-world? Okay, cool. But there's a limit to everything, at some point you just have to let go of reskining and stop being afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
