  • Toraja Video with a Guide: • Visiting a Dead Person...
    Our homestay: www.homestay-t...
    In this Indonesia Travel Vlog, we finally make it to Toraja (both Tana Toraja and Toraja Utara). We had been looking forward to going to Toraja since we first arrived in Indonesia! In our last video we explored Makassar, the largest city in Sulawesi, before taking an overnight bus and arriving in Toraja at 5am the day of this video! The bus was surprisingly comfortable, but we didn't sleep too much as there was no bathroom on the bus so we were woken up frequently for the bus to stop.. sorry if we look extra tired 😅
    Unfortunately our first two days in Toraja we didn't have a guide so it was just the two of us and a motorbike with some recommendations of where to go. On our first day we explored the north of Toraja (Toraja Utara). We started by having amazing Torajan coffee at a cute coffee shop in Rantepao! We then stopped by the post office as we had some things to mail. We couldn't believe how much was actually in Rantepao! There were hotels, banks, a post office, lots of stores....before we went to Toraja we expected it to be a lot more rural so that was really good to find out! We then continued driving to our first location. On the way we stopped by Objek Wisata Kalimbuang Bori. There was a sign in English at the beginning that explained a little about the area and the megalith stones that were there. It was so interesting to walk around even without knowing a lot of the history! We continued to drive to the Tinimbayo Viewpoint where we were able to see amazing views of rice terraces and grab a coffee. We then drove just a little farther to Batutumonga Viewpoint which had amazing views of all of Rantepao. As it was already getting late we didn't stay there long and continued on to the Lo'Ko Mata Stone Graveyard. Again it was super cool to see (especially because of the buffalo) but without a guide we didn't know anything. From there we went to our furthest stop - a viewpoint somewhere close to Lolai. On the way home we stopped by Pana. While we were there filming we thought it was the oldest stone baby grave.....turns out it's the oldest stone grave and also a baby grave (the baby graves are in trees, not stones)! We ended Day 1 here as we were so tired and getting cold!
    Day 2 started with a tour of our homestay: Ne'Pakku Manja. It was the most adorable homestay in a great location about 10 minutes outside of Rantepao. It was only a few minutes from Ke'te Kesu - our first stop of Day 2 and a must see place in Toraja! Ke'te Kesu has lots of souvenir shops but also lots of different graves. At the end there is even a cave you can enter which we were lucky enough to have some local boys guide us inside! Next we went to Londa Caves which are must see burial caves in Toraja! After the caves we got lunch with a French couple at a roadside warung. Next we went to Lemo - an ancient stone grave with lots of Tau-Tau statues. Our final stop was the huge Jesus Christ statue in Toraja (Buntu Burake). It's one of the tallest Jesus statues in the world - even taller than Brazil's famous Christ the Redeemer! We had such an amazing time in Toraja even without a guide....but in the next video you'll see how much better it is to explore Toraja with a guide!

    Indonesia has so many different cultures, local language, tradition, etc. When you guys were in Bali, actually there is also a village called Trunyan not so far from Kintamani - Lake Batur. Its the only village in Bali who are not Hindu but they have their believe similar than the Toraja, dead bodies are not buried but just on top of the soil till you can see the skulls and bones after a while, the same in Toraja where they put the coffin in a cave, after a while then you only see the skulls and bones. Normally in that particular cave, is like a family grave. Another thing you may notice, people in South Sulawesi and Toraja, they eat more buffalo meat rather than cow meat cos its more expensive and also not their habit.

      @@NataliesPassportyes, in Trunyan Village they put the dead bodies under the trees named "Taru Menyan" (I bet the village name was taken from this tree) . It means the tree that emits fragrance.
      And so, there is a miracle come from. Although the bodies were left in an open space, it didn’t emit a foul odor. Thanks to the existence of the Taru Menyan Tree, which is able to eliminate unpleasant odors.

    I’m an Indonesian from another island (Borneo), so visiting the graveyards in Toraja was awkward for me because I felt seeing all these skulls and skeletons somehow felt taboo and disrespectful, but locals assured me that it was OK. It was an experience, and it made me think about how people from different cultures view death in different ways as well.
    Bori Kalimbuang is reserved only for Torajan aristocrats so not everyone can have their funeral there. Water buffaloes are fine, I’d be scared of North American buffaloes though. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in the province of South Sulawesi!

      😅menurut saya pulau sulawesi adalah pulau yg harus nya di bangun banyak fasilitas modern. seperti gedung pencakar langit yg banyak, stadion kelas dunia, dan banyakin bikin hotel yg super mewah. kasian makassar ga punya stadion😂, stadion nya udah di bongkar, gubernurnya di tangkap kpk. negara payah, ga bisa memanfaatkan sumber daya alam di indonesia. kita masih se kelas sama negara prindapan😊, rakyatnya kurang memiliki kesadaran soal lingkungan. sampah dimana mana. pemerintahan nya bobrok.

      @kilantravels Před rokem +16

      @@bayulimitedid9130 saya mengerti keinginan untuk maju, tapi gedung tinggi bukan indikasi kemajuan. Saat berkeliling Eropa, saya lebih suka pendekatan mereka yang melestarikan bangunan lama alih-alih membangun gedung tinggi, memperluas akses angkutan umum agar kendaraan berkurang, dan menghadirkan alam di tengah kota dengan mengadakan taman dan memberdayakan sungai.
      Saya juga pernah ke India, kota-kota India banyak gedung tingginya lho. Mereka maju dan banyak fasilitas modern, tidak seperti bayangan orang Indonesia kebanyakan lah pokoknya. Tapi pembangunan di negara-negara Asia seperti India, Tiongkok, dan termasuk juga Indonesia itu tidak mumpuni. Hanya berkutat pada ekonomi tapi lalai akan lingkungan alam dan sosial. Saya lebih memilih metode Eropa yang selain membangun ekonomi juga membangun rakyatnya.
      Toraja dan daerah lain di Indonesia memang perlu maju, tapi bukan dengan mengorbankan tradisi dan alamnya yang indah. Maju bukan berarti merusak apa yang sudah kita miliki dan menjadi warisan dari nenek moyang.

    Born and raised in Indonesia, but I am of Batak tribe. I've heard this Toraja culture and views of death since I was young, and I used to think that it's such a weird culture. But then growing up and getting older, and losing all my maternal and paternal grandparents, I now appreciate their culture.
    Losing someone you love is never an easy process, the shock and the transition from living with them to living without them, is just hard. In our Batak tribe, we just have funeral ceremony for 7 days, especially if the dead is considered as old old people. And yet for the Toraja people, they release their grieve in such a gentle way, that I cannot help it but feel a bit jealous.
    Owww.... it's already August... Independence day in Indonesia is CRAZY~~~~......

    Toraja is one of the most amazing place l've ever been, as an Indonesian myself. Fun fact, at that graveyard, nobody are allowed to touch the skeletons except their families. Even if the family intended to move the remains to other spot, they have to throw a spiritual ceremony first. And toraja's burial ceremony is insanely extortionate (without disrespect of the culture), they need to sacrifice dozens or even hundreds of buffaloes, horses, pigs, etc, depends on their status in society. If you're a nobleman lineage, you have to sacrifice Tedong Bonga (Toraja's unique pink buffalo) that can costs up to a billion rupiah for each.
    That's one of the reason they preserve the corpses of their beloved ones (with special concoction) for years at their homes, until their descendants have enough money to hold the funeral ceremony.
