It looks really cool, I feel like it would have helped a bit in my first few weeks of learning (I remember screwing up with the tension a few times and getting frustrated), but I feel like once you've picked for a week or two, or once you get a vice it'd start being much less helpful (or even a hindrance if beginners stick with it too long)

How many actual locks do you have access to the back of the lock to be able to tension from? Cool starter tool, but once you understand tensioning it’s sort of moot.

you have both hands available when picking a door lock.. even padlocks tend to hang in relatively fixed positions when actually in use.. being able to hold on to the lock is actually the least common situation in actual practice.

      Actually David,
      You & RivCo are correct,
      only to a point.
Not to be a bigger prick than I
      naturally am, but...
      Real world experience gives you
      the understanding that when
preforming a NDE of a (sfic, WB,
      American, Hurd, master, or
whatever) padlock on a daisy chain
(gate / equipment) any given day of
      the year, the cumbersome position
will have a bearing on tensioning &
pick orientation... & when you know
that just cutting off is not an option
as you are required to have to return
      it, you'll understand why the
      challenges in locksport communities
      such as blindfold, frozen lock,
off hand, one hand, mittens, etc...
are fun as challenges, but are
      based in real world experiences.
And yes there are a couple of
tension tools that let you tension
from the inner back of the core.
namely for certain sfic & split core
      designs.. but not anything close
to what's done in this video.
As this setup is good for training &
      self entertainment purposes...
      just not for normal practice,
it is as title stated a "trainer".
Not for tension training, but for
      feel of pin placement.
So take what I say with a grain of
salt, don't take it personally / get
      discouraged, keep broadening your
      thinking, & don't stop voicing
opinions... just be prepared to look
at things at more than a couple
      different ways.
It will take you much further.
      (& I hope you're 1/2 way there)
