  • Yeah so this is my Journey video of onyx. I've had her 3 months exactly today and I couldn't be prouder to how far she has come! She's come from being a petrified and nervous horse to competing in her first show last weekend and was perfectly behaved and received some lovely comments from everyone there.
It just shows that no horse is completely un fixable, even the wildest most frightening ones! Trust and care is all they ask for and they'll give you their hearts in return.
I've learnt SOOO much from this amazing mare and i think we have been good for each other over these past few months. Thank you to everyone that believed in us from the beginning!
    *UPDATE 2015*
had onyx nearly 2 years now, she is doing amazing and I'm so excited for the future with her!

If I could give you a million thumbs up, I would. You have literally saved Onyx's life. I admire your courage, your devotion, your tenacity and the confidence you have given to a horse that has been ruined by others. I think you have a big future ahead of you. If only every mistreated and misunderstood horse could find an owner like you.

God bless you guys for what you do. It DOES take a lot of work to help a damaged horse come around. They don't trust people, they think everybody is out to hurt them, especially humans. And like it or not HUMAN BEINGS are the MOST DANGEROUS animals on the planet, especially those cruel to these beautiful animals. Thank God there are other people out there willing to work with them and show them not all people are bad.

No whip, no smacking, no spurs, no straps, no verbal abuse. Girl, you are a great horsewoman! You take your time & go gently with your horse which was all she needed. Thank god no one else had the patience for her because she found a gem in you! And you showed no fear even during all that bucking & messing around. How I don't know. Fair play!!

How beautiful. I've had a similar experience; my horse was nowhere near as bad as yours but he was very spooky and nervy when I first got him (actually just very green for his age) and people made similar comments "oh he's an Arab he's crazy" "good luck with that one" "you've got your work cut out for you with that crazy horse"
Thus far in the space of a year I've done dressage, endurance, hunting, cross country and showjumping with him, and yes he's not been perfect every time but he's so worth it! I hate it when people just want a perfect horse straight away and act like they should all just be fine from day one and if they're not it means they're crazy
Well done with Onyx! She's stunning. Is she a Welsh D or Friesian cross?

I've had my mare for 24 years now and she was very difficult when I first got her, scared and nervous like your mare. But at age 28, you wouldn't know this calm, smart, cooperative and gentle mare was the same horse. I learned SOOO much because of her, like you have. May you enjoy each other for many years to come!

    @heinzstoffregen5348 Před 9 lety +35

Wow, what a sensational result of riding and training such a challenging horse as Onyx! Congratulations, Hannah, you are a star to produce such a wonderful horse !!!
May I again confirm, that you did a perfect job, starting from your saying: "nobody knows your horse better than yourself, no matter how new or wild they are." Yes, you came to understand Onyx better than any of those know-all big-mouths, who never rode Onyx but felt they could advise you.
Yes, Hannah, you were right in going your own way - and everything you did was exactly the best to do - mainly not giving up or quitting to make Onyx a great show jumper.
Yes, Onyx was about the biggest challenge a girl could be confronted with, testing her rider whether she could ride a walking horse like a circus high school rider (1:26) or act as rodeo girl on a bucking bronco.
And the result is a miracle: you can ride a very calm and Onyx in the forest bareback. Wow - what an achievement!
Your explanation is revealing: "as long as your horse is comfortable and happy and your moving forward in your progress, no matter how slowly, thats how you get such good results."
Yes, Hannah, that is the right philosophy.
But you are mot only good as a psychologist, but also physically very fir and mentally extremely strong - otherwise you could not have taken falls so easy, never get frightened of that beast, but always continue riding her.
I bet, you are one out of a hundred girls to react like that.
And the future? I hope you will continue in your work with Onyx, will succeed and be proud of her and yourself.
This video is not only the story Rotherhithe Rhian - but very much the story of 97hannahmaria as a very determined horse trainer. Excellent job, Hannah !!! Good luck for the future - and do take care!

WOW! Finally a horse whose behaviour looks exactly like mine. The careening backwards, rearing, bolting, spinning, leaping in the air... My boy and I have been together for 2 years now. He made huge progress for about 7 months and was becoming a real pleasure. Then, we had a couple of set backs. I had a fall out riding and he bolted on his own, freaked himself out and felt abandoned by me. It's been a chacha since then - two steps forward, two steps back but... I have not given up. Thank you for your post. I feel less alone in this because of your story.

To achieve this in 3 months is incredible!
From you barely being able to get on her without her having a panic attach to cantering calmly hacking nicely, jumping and doing a show!
You'd think it would take at least 6 months to so half as much as you have! Cannot wait to see what your future holds!

Wow, how is she going now? This is beautiful. Amazing what you can do in three months. I love how you give her a loving pat now and then. She needs that for reassurance. You can tell she is very frightened. This is how all horses should be treated. They are not doing anything "naughty" on purpose. You did not once punish this mare for her behaviour, except you provided reassurance so she could trust you. That is amazing, you should probably get into project horses and turn around more lives! I hope you have already done that since this video was 2.5 years ago. You really have a talent there and you are kind, gentle and loving. Keep it up!

So sad how so many horses are ruined by humans and then declared too dangerous for anyone, only destined for the sale yard. Glad to see there are people out there with the knowledge and patience to get them to trust people again. Thanks for the upload!

I'm so proud or your perseverence! You were a good rider when you began but I noticed your riding become more solid as I watched your video. Keep up the great work!

Loved that you did not give up with her. You will have a loyal friend for life. If anyone could stop cutting onions in here would be good
