  • Dozens of community members rallied outside the library in Guerneville on Saturday to support a story time hosted by the Russian River Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence amid calls from an anti-LGBTQ+ group to cancel the event.
Clad in rainbow colors and waving Pride flags, supporters attempted to block from view a small group of protesters that had lined up on the sidewalk in front of the Sonoma County Library branch on Main Street.
Dan Samson, co-chair of Russian River Pride and one of about 40 locals who showed up, said it was critical for the community to push back against hateful rhetoric surrounding the event.
The story time, a Pride Month tradition in the queer-friendly town, caught attention on a larger stage after the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property launched an online petition demanding the library system cancel it.
The Pennsylvania-based organization of Catholic lay people accused the Sisters of “targeting the innocence of our children” by “flaunting their immoral lifestyle,” according to the online petition, which had been signed by nearly 21,000 people as of Saturday.

The Sisters are amazing, looks like a really fun time for the kids. When I lived in Sonoma County I would see them at every charity event I went to, helping to raise money for any number of causes. They are wonderful entertainers and their hearts are in the right place.

Judas also wanted to give money to the poor, so he sold Our Lord for 30 pieces of silver. The ends do not justify the means.

The disrespect and vitriol of the library supporters was very revealing. Acting en masse they were aggressive, uncivil, and vulgar towards the handful of concerned Catholics who gathered to peacefully pray the rosary. As a Catholic and native Californian, I am very concerned that drag queens of "Perpetual Indulgence" have access to young children.

I'm trying to imagine our family's younger members being entertained by a storyteller
    A) dressed more or less as a clown without reference to gender or gender-normativeness of the clothing. Maybe it's genetic, but to varying degrees we all tend to find clowns un-funny if not downriyht creepy.
    B) who yelled at their audience.I can see that not ending well.
But that doesn't constitute a decided objection to someone else's participation. /shrug

Well none of the performers were "yelling at their audience". However, as you can see, many so-called Catholics were screaming and harassing people.
