    "500 years ago, we had never heard the word 'Indian'. Now we're fighting to live up to it."
    John Trudell
    That was in Neil Diamond's Reel Injun

    Is it possible to see this film online? I live in the Dominican Republic and I would love to see it. I am from the US, from Washington DC actually, so I grew up with people talking about the “Redskins” football team…😢

      what is wrong with the Redskins football team?

    • @capn_toad
      @capn_toad Před 10 dny +4

      @@books4739the term "redskins" is very racist in origin. plus it's like the trailer says "people take artifacts they don't understand and turn them into simple decorations." The native headdress is one of those artifacts.

      @@capn_toad why is it racist and according to whom? I am wearing a 90s Redskins NFL tshirt while typing this btw.

      @@books4739it is racist because, number one, the term "redskins" is a derogatory term used to refer to indigenous people on this continent, and two, the whole headdress thing: Our ceremonial and religious tools are not playthings, nor do they belong to anyone else.
      And yes, the name is super racist, and yes, I am Indigenous.
      We're not costumes, and we're still here.

      @@PHDWhom When you say you are indigenous, do you mean you identify as indigenous?
      Some sources online indicate that the term redskin originates from the Native Americans themselves.
      The wikipedia article on the subject indicates that natives polled were not offended by the name until very recently.
      The people polled only had to identify as native though.
      My sense from this is that the name was not racist until the 2020s, and that even then we do not really know if the indigenous people are offended or if foreigners are offended on their behalf.

    We're enthralled with indigenous culture because the insane liberal institutions made sure that we didnt learn about our own cultures, in school. We hunger for authenticity and tradition. I have the utmost respect for my indigenous friends, and the cultures.

    • @PHDWhom
      @PHDWhom Před 9 dny +3

      This is understood, but indigenous people on this continent, at least on the "American" continent, have been referred to as "Indians" due to the name "In Dio" or "in god." Referring to the people here as though they were merely just animals without culture or civilization. Which is far from the truth. Yes, you are Indian from India, and some of the older indigenous folks here still use the term "Indian" because they're accustomed to it.

      the blame for the 'Indian' moniker lies on Columbus, the most clueless colonizer in recorded history

      The Indigenous people of Canada are properly referred to as First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.
      Of course, the 'Indian Act' is still in effect, and it is still called Indian Status by many.
      All thanks to a misnomer.
