- Today’s feature has been called legends of one of the golden eras of hip hop. From the late 80s to early 90s hip hop had a sound that captivated a worldwide audience and laid a foundation for the genre and has lived on since then, even if in smaller peaks and valleys as time goes on. They released hip hop classic after classic, and were, even to this day heavily sampled by fellow hip hop artist like Biggie Smalls, Kanye West, even French Montana and Nick Minaj brought the dungeon dragons out in salute to the Lords. Biggie liked their classic Chief Rocker so much he sampled Mr Funky’s voice for his “Machine Gun Funk” track on his classic debut album that came out just a year later. The duo rappers rhymed flawlessly off one another on those boom bap sp1200, akai-s900, mpc60 made beats about their real life hood circumstances having to see poverty, violence and the drug epidemic play out right before their eyes. Together they made classics tracks in a short span, BET even naming them the best rap group in 1993. But like most groups they enjoyed a life span not long enough for their potential to really shine through when they were at their hottest. Over time their voice in music became faint, as most today struggle to remember their influence as personal goals separated these legends and like Nas in 2007 begs the question where are they now? What happened to the Chief rockers so important to the boom Bap Era? CHIEF ROCKERS: What Happened To Lords of The Underground? Stunted Growth Music

Thanks for the support but you have some things wrong, I started Lords of the Underground , my best friend in college (LA) was Marley Marls cousin and asked me to start a group when I went back to school in North Carolina. I met Denton Evans and he told me about Doitall and I found Mr Funke on campus so they weren’t looking for a Dj 😊 I was looking for MCs . Please get the history right, watch our Drink Champs and stay tuned for new music and tour dates in Europe. The Plain Dealer 2 out now haha
Bet appreciate that clarity. I’ll hit you on ig. Would love to holla at you.
@@stuntedgrowthmusic you know it's time to do Rawkus Records. Stunted Growth. I know you are the guy to do it. I know it
I have a youtube channel and I interview artist I would like to interview you lmk 💪
We were and still are Underground, the reality is you can't help being played on the radio and at clubs bro, thats what you want in this industry.Do you want to play in the NFL and not have a goal to win the Super Bowl?? of course we wanted success by our means and not selling out @SubliminalMinded2011
LordJazzHitMe1TimeMakeItFunky!
"Chief Rocka" is timeless. That song alone will ALWAYS be Hip-Hop.
Lords of the Underground were what they were. Just like all Jersey MCs. They just that ceiling they never get past musically. LOTU represented that entire era. When you listen to that first album, it sounds like a time capsule. A time where everybting was simpler. I miss it
Industry had a lot of biased to smaller cities
Lords will forever be royalty in Jersey. Brick City stand up. 973
London too. They're touring the UK - March 15th I'll be going to Shepherd's Bush Empire to see them & The Pharcyde. ✌🏽💪🏾✊🏾
Brick City stand up! Correction JC Stunted: They attended and graduated from The Shaw University in North Carolina, a historically black college and university (HBCU)
interesting info... explains their rise & fall...💯💯💯
Fact my cousin went to Shaw she was in the "Here come the lords" video the whole video was shot on the campus
One of my favorite groups in Hip Hop. Here Come The Lord's was a flawless classic!!!!
Still play their music...31 years later❤....Here come the lords and Chief Rocka were My 2 most favorite songs
The song still give me chills
Here comes the Lords was a game changer for me!!!! All time classic. I would love for you to do one on the rapper Nine. I love these trips down memory lane
What they want 9? That was my shit back in the day 😂
Lords Of The Underground are hip hop icons. I still love ❤️ to listen 🎧 to their music.
Madd Skillz, Madd Skillz!!!
CHECK IT! CHECK IT! MICROPHONE CHECK IT! THE CROWD WENT WILD WHEN THE LORDS CAME TO WRECK IT! CHECK IT! (4x) MICROPHONE CHECK IT! THE CROWD WENT WILD WHEN THE LORDS CAME TO WRECK IT!
Do it all and Redman came up together as well,Lords will forever have a place in hip hop when it comes to my headphones 🎧 " i live for da funk/i die for da funk"
Could you please do a video based on the Boogiemonsters,Mad Skillz,Digable Planets,Mad Lion,Big Noyd,Organized Konfuzion,Flatlinnerz,Da Youngstas,Illegal,Da Bush Babees,Kurious,Pete Rock and CL Smooth,Channel Live and the Umc’s.

I am honored to be a resident of "da Bricks" and I get to see the Hon. Councilman Dupree Kelly all the time at various events throughout the city. LOTUG stays in my rotation to this day. Psycho, Funky Child, Lord Jazz Hit Me One Time, and Chief Rocka still gets the crowd hype!
I had a friend that was a hair stylest in the music industry in the 1990s, she used to give me all her promo tapes & 💿 cds she would get. I had this on a promo 💿 and used to play it all the time what a great era great times the 90s Inglewood ca, 🌴
I forgot about these boys. They were so dope back in the day.
still are
LOTUG....1st album Here come the lords is a hell of an album..They really came through and shined.!!
lord jazzy hit me one time make it funky!
"Here come da lords , here come da lords "💯 💯
That first LOTUG album was 🔥! Lord jazz hit me one time make it funky!
one of the most slept on groups. Chief Rocka iz a klazzic
Ayo....That "Here Comes The Lord's" album was a monster on the streets back then. Now, the "Brick City Newark" produced some of Boom Baps dopest MCs such as "Redman", "The Artifacts", "Twin Hype", "Tha Outsidaz", "Rah Digga" & a few others. But what the "Lord's" brought to the game was dope lyrics, whitty metaphors, high energy stage performances & fly Marley Marl influenced beats to keep your head nodding. It just comes to show you if you keep true to your fans, what made them fan favorites & believe in themselves....even at 50 you still be relevant in their careers & still be considered rap legends.
🤔🎵🎧🤔🎵🎧🤔🎵
Redman came before the Lords.
@@shauncameron8390 I know just naming Newark artist in general
Thank you for doing this one. You should do another forgotten group Group Home next.
“Psycho” is one of my favorite joints of all time.
So much energy in that track and the beat was bananas.
I remember hearing it on Morgan State’s radio station back in ‘92 and being floored by that joint. Word is bond 💯
Honestly didn't now about the Biggie sample for Machine *** Funk. That's dope. Funky kinda had an early Biggie flow to me (or the other way around). LOTUG was nice though.
Every Die Hard Hip-Hop head knew that back in the days. It’s even mentioned on the Ready to Die album credits.
@@jeanemlicarnot true because I never knew 💯
And knowing is half the battle.@@quintariosmith990

Do it all newark councilman
I've said it before, I really wish you would do more Jersey rappers! There's a deep history and legacy of hip-hop in NJ
Can you consider doing a video on witchdoctor or cool breeze from the dungeon family or just one on the dungeon family all together.
Here comes the lords is arguably the best introduction to a group
Next to Creepin On Ah Come Up and probably 36 Chambers
Apparently Lords Mr Funke influenced Biggie’s second voice on Gimme the Loot.
What a time to be alive and hear these classics for the first time‼️ #Thenineties 🗣️🎵🎶💪🏽
Psycho was my favourite track , these dudes are legends, massive respect
THE GOOD TIMES
One of my favorite rap groups. I wished they would have signed to another label like a Def Jam or Loud Records. They graduated from Shaw University in Raleigh,N.C. They even mentioned the university in their song "Here Come the Lords". I believe they were also masons or were in some other fraternity back in the day.
Jersey!!! "Psycho" has that crazy bassline. I love their first album. Do you have any info on N-Tyce (Hush Hush Tip)? She made that one song (to my knowledge) and disappeared.
She was also in Deadly Venoms (Female Rap Group). She was a cutie....
She still doing music and managing. I saw something on her recently.
Man LOTUG were dope! I miss the early 90s.
AWESOME episode, great work! Do DAS EFX and Boogiemonsters next.....
Do one on Jim Crow.
They were a we're up next group based out of ATL in the late 90s/early 00s.
Record company drama seemed to slow the roll of a very talented group.
Polow Da Don from the group produced "Throw some D's" for Rich Boy
I would love to see this one.
@@therealmarlonbellamy There first album Crow's Nest was a classic.
None of the songs were skippable.
Obvious stars but the record labels fumbled
@@jeffertonalive8536 I agree.
You really know the history..kudos' 💯 mpc2000 mpc60 sp1200
Testament to having fall back plans. Proud of these brothas. College GRADUATES not dropouts (Mr Funkee went back for his masters not a BA). That’s why they have real gigs as adults . Just wish they found the right indie distribution and kept the music coming. I played their debut to death in 93! Another funny fact is folks thought they were like a DAS EFX clone on their debut single “Pysho” because uñidos the similar underground video theme. But by the time Funky Child and Chief Rocka came out you knew they were their own wave! The production on that debut was epic
I loved Psycho. And Mr. Funke was a damn good rapper for his era.
They were dope! Ya taking me back to my middle school years with that one! Salute to them and salute to Duitall for becoming a councilman of his 'hood in Brick City
Great breakdown as always. I love this show man. Thank you. Frfr.
Wow, i requested this over two years ago, Thank you😊
JC can you do Quad City Dj’s next?
1Chief 🗣️thank you for this 1
Learned about them from NBA Street Vol.2, my favorite song on there. Dope
One of my FAVORITE groups!!! I still blast their music in my home!! I’m happy to see they are all still around and enjoying life. Thank You for sharing this episode!!🙏🏼😎👍🏽
Ok you're back👍
I personally witnessed The Lords rock Albums 1 & 2 on tour overseas as if they were doing songs from what a regular artist would do from 5 albums.
They had that many hits and club bangers. Trust me.
New Lords Of The Underground & Snowgoons Album dropping soon! Check on our Channel for the 2 Videos already released! Salute
Go grab the album, to bring the lords money
Take it home to mom and say "ain't they funky?" 👌

Dope documentaries bro. Do one on Group Home. My favorite rap group
Shaw University in Raleigh, NC.
Wow…I forgot about these dudes…That was a “Funky Child,” & “Chief Rocka” time ago!. They seem to disappear off the planet!.
I’m new to your channel but I’m really diggin your content.
Not sure if you did one already but a video on POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHERS would be dope.
Keep up the great work brother.

please do a video on Canadian rapper belly- watch his song I'm the man ft kurrupt on youtube that was my first introduction of belly and his drink champs episode and what Jays has to say about belly says it all about his talent but I would love to hear why his career was stunted for having such talent to write for beyonce and the weekend and freestyle on any podcast better then most..please consider doing a belly stunted growth video I spend alot of time supporting your channel and have told everyone I know how much I have learned through your channel and would love to see a Belly video it would be appreciated more then words can possibly describe I appreciate the effort and work you put into each video and would love to hear your research and your verdict on his career growth being stunted for such amazing talent- plz consider this request it would mean alot to know u actually read this and want to please your viewers like you ask after every video who you should do next and that's amazing and I would enjoy a belly video alot..please
They actually had beef with Lord Finesse over the Lords name.
Who else thought that was Lil Wayne in the thumbnail
happy belated birthday to my birthday twin doitall January 14th
Do one on major figgas 7769 Ex Girlfriend Y?N Vee
If they had the tools back then that artist have now they could have been what Griselda is now
Do iamsu and the hbk gang
I always felt their success was limited due to that other 2 MC and a DJ crew from Jersey. Their styles were way too similar.
Oh wow, I never heard of them before. What a shame
Where were you during the 90’s??? Everyone who listened to Hip-Hop knew who the Lords of the Underground was back then including both Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G.
@@jeanemlicar I wasn’t born yet, I’ve heard of every 90s hip-hop group and rapper from that era except these guys.
Gotcha. Have you heard of the Cella Dwellaz, Organized Konfuzion,De La Soul,Gravediggaz,Black Sheep, A tribe Called Quest,Onyx,Flatlinnerz,Illegal,Souls of Mischief,Hieroglyphics,The Pharcyde,Gangstarr,EPMD and Leaders of the new school?@@123theprodigy5
Oh no I don't wanna go pop.
They had 2 iconic songs but that's it.... They didn't have the it factor to last... That style of rap was dying by 96... Hell Wu Tang faded out by 1998... Their best cd wasn't near Enter The 36, Brotha Lynch Hung, Domino, Snoop, 2Pac, Onyx, etc... They were on tier with a dying Run DMC, Paperboy, Erick Sermon, LL Cool J, all considered struggling with their 93 projects...💯💯💯
Wu tang faded out by 98? That's one of the most nonsensical things I have seen on the internet in a while
@@LancePrimus / Really, you mean like your arrogant response from being in your feelings...🙄🙄🙄 Because im positive you've seen more nonsensical material on this federal platform than the pick & choose part out of context to belittle...🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽
The name Chief Rocka🙅 is an insult to all my indigenous ancestors and Im offended🤬
