That's brilliant. I've seen people fill raised beds that way. Don't know why I never connected the dots before and used that method for containers. Thank-you!

I used to use all kinds of things to fill space in my large containers. I switched to using pool noodles a few years ago and this works for me. I can cut them up in chunks or lay them in spirals or even cut them in half lengthwise to go in my window boxes. At the end of the season, I take them out and put them all in a mesh bag and store them and reuse them.

I recently repotted some large pots that the previous owner had partially filled with small plastic pots to save on potting soil. To my surprise the plastic pots were home to several slugs! I'll refill the bottoms of large pots with compost from now on.

As usual, you have such great gardening tips. The pots turned out beautifully. We have similar taste in plants; I have Coffee Cups, Mojito, Streptocarpus (a favorite that I cannot keep alive inside ☹️ or keep the bugs outside from eating the blooms), Colocasia esculenta and torenia. I will have to try some of these lovely plant combos. 💚

What a beautiful area that is to sit and relax, well when you get the chance. Do the giant elephant ears stay a bit smaller in the confined space. I can't help but think about that ginormous beast out in garden, maybe a couple yrs ago.

Genius idea! In my woodland gardens there are always plenty of dry-rotted twigs & small branches. This will be a marvelous way to break them up smaller & recycle them. I have run out of places to do this among the shrubs, etc. You always show things that help me in my own gardening experience. Thank you!

Beautiful! The groups of containers really do act as a living wall to lend privacy and a cozy feel and I love the sound of water. So soothing and peaceful.
We filled our 30" tall raised beds with logs, sticks, and whatever weeds and yard debris we could find. Most plants, at least vegetables, only need 8-10 inches, at most. As you said, it's a great way to make beautiful compost that can be used in the garden later, as well as dispose of all those weeds and spent plants. ~ Lisa

Love the tips on filling the bottoms of large pots with weeds that will become compost. Potting soil is outrageously expensive. Your designs for the pots are lovely and as a bonus you introduce plants that are new and have unusual foliage. In 8b Central Texas we are in survival mode until temperatures drop below 100 (probably end of September) and we get some rain, which is not even in the long-term forecast. Until fall arrives, we rely on people in more temperate climates to show us their gardens.

Genius! I was one that was putting plastic bottles in the bottom, but my tomatoes started drooping because the roots were just trying to grasp the plastic🤦‍♀️I had to pull the entire plant out and pour soil into the bottom (after removing the plastic bottles). They were in shock for a few days but bounced back. Now I know what to do for next time! Thank you!!

Yulia how do you winterize your elephant ears and coffee cups in the garage? I have an unheated garage and this year I stored my elephant ears (not corms) in a pot with potting soil. I watered them once in February, when the soil became too dry, and they came back for me in June, but just little leaves! Not big, like they originally were. Or should I fertilize them with fish fertilizer to make them grow faster?
