- Visit one of the most outstanding railroads in the USA. The C&TS RR is one of the best preserved steam railroads to be found anywhere, running through the West's finest scenery.
This program shows the entire Cumbres & Toltec line from Antonito, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico from the train and trackside. This is one of the most rugged railroad lines in the country, something that you won't want to miss! Lots of smoke, steam, and pretty golden October trees. A show that the entire family will enjoy. Includes snow scenes and the Rotary Snowplow.
As an added treat, we've included 25 minutes of bonus footage! The contains no music and no narration...just the trains and their sounds.
If you liked our "America By Rail" videos, you'll LOVE this show. Shot and edited in the "ABR-Style" with music composed by PBS composer Michael Lynch.
This is the preserved famous Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) narrow gauge. You'll see K-27 #463, K-36 #484, 487, 488 & 489, K-37 #497.

This video was a part of my childhood, it is great to see it now be preserved on CZcams for many years to come.
The C&T is a railroad I will eventually visit.
Hope you can visit the railroad someday. It’s probably even better now than when I shot this video.
@@RailwayProductions That goes double for me. I would like to visit the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad myself someday. Such beautiful scenery and amazing steam trains.
This, along with Pentrex's Great American Train Rides video inspired me to convince my parents to take me on the Cumbres and Toltec myself.
I’m gonna love this Railway Productions!, I have a brother from Kentucky that he’s a big fan of the C&TS
You are correct
I watched this many times on dvd as kid with my grandparents.
I own this on DVD! Always fun to watch.
Surprisingly enough, I had this dvd as a child but never watched it til 2019 or 2020 I believe. I don't know why I never watched it, but I enjoyed it and still do after re-watching this. While there has been some change on C&T since 2021 with the introduction of oil-burning steam when 489 returned to service from its 1472 rebuild. I still think they're worth a visit to see their line, engines, and huge collection of rolling stock.
Great video of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad located in Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado. On going. It’s another beautiful heritage railroad. Very great. With the beautiful steam locomotives in operation at this narrow gauge 64-Mile long heritage railroad (Even when I have visited this back in July 2nd 2016 and July 3rd 2022).
I still have this on DVD. RP is such a golden production company.
I hope one day i will visit the Cumbres And Toltec one day
Precious childhood memories right here. I really LOVED the music in this, especially the track at 16:01.
Glad you enjoyed it. When I was making all this, I never really thought of making childhood memories for anyone lol.
@@RailwayProductions Well, that was the magic of old train vids like this from the 90s and 2000s, alongside the classic seasons of Thomas.
@@RailwayProductions you also did with the steam in the seasons series
What a beautiful place in New Mexico and Colorado 👍👍👍👍
A really pretty area. If you haven't been, a place for your bucket list!
I remember watching a similar program called Narrow Rails Still Shine, which introduced me to two of the greatest legacies of Colorado railroading. Even as an Australian on the other side of the Pacific, the Rio Grande was among my favourite railroads in my childhood because of that.
I actually made a visit to C&T myself this past summer and it was an amazing experience. My favorite parts of the trip was I got to see an engine swap as on occasion when 2 trains are running and meet at Osier, the trains will swap engines and I got to see it happen. My other favorite part was getting permission to go in the cab of the engine I rode for the first leg of my trip and then blow the whistle. I’m definitely making another trip there in the future but will go via the other route/Antonito to Chama as I took the Chama to Antonito route for first visit.
Although I love the blast up the hill from Chama, my favorite part of the railroad is Antonito to Osier. Both for riding and line side photography. Not as easy as the chase up highway 17 out of Chama, but taking the jeep down some goat trail to an out of the way spot all by myself is really nice!
@@RailwayProductions neat
@@RailwayProductions are they public access or do you need an agreement to go down those trails?
@@TNRailProductions_01 they are public access, but some you need really high clearance.
Great video with great background music Thank You !
I have owned this DVD since I was 8 years old, I absolutely love these films and will continue to for years to come!

I love the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. #488 and #497 are my 2 favorite steam locomotives. I also love they use Rotary snowplow OY to plow the snow. My favorite instruments 16:44 to 17:05 and 36:15 to 36:55
Me too, my favorite instruments at 18:52
@@andrewdiesel487 I love that too
Out of all the engines featured in this program, K-36 #487 has the most screen time.
God I used to watch this all night when I was little.
Oh how I've missed it.
I hope they upload Santa Fe Mainline Memories next. It and this disc was my favorite.
Glad you enjoy my work! You can see Santa Fe Mainline Memories on VRF.TV.

Amazing Video, I remember seeing clips of the footage here in other documentaries, but this tells the whole thing.
BTW, this may sound silly, but do you have plans on putting the Alphabet Train Video by Railway Productions on this channel?
I have ridden the train over 20 times from 1976 to 2010. And chased the train even more times in both Spring and FAll. FAll is my favorite time of the year. Last time I chased was 2017. Thanks for making this video it brings back many fond memories.
Sadly the C&TS chose 492 over 497, it would be awesome to see 497 run again though!
This movie strikes me as odd in the fact I can’t find any other footage or photos of the tripleheader train headed by 484, 489 and 497 respectively. Or any account of it ever happening online. You can see it at 1:15 12:04 14:09 54:32 54:45 and 55:26
Which engine had the reading 6 chime in this video?
1:14 Note the tripleheader with K-36 484 (in "Cumbres & Toltec" Rio Grande style lettering, K-36 489 (in "Rio Grande" lettering), and K-37 497 (in "Rio Grande" lettering) taken circa 1992-1999 since 497 became a full-time resident of the C&TS in 1992.
Any idea of how many passenger cars are needed to mandate a doubleheader, let alone a tripleheader, from Chama to Cumbres?
I estimate around 20-30, since I’ve seen other videos with close up shots and counted. Still trying to find footage if this specific triple header myself
5:19 The Alphabet train
What year was this video released
Released in 1999, The Last Train Movie of the 20th Century
I have a question. Is this program essentially a re-edited version of "Cumbres!" from 1988?
No this is pretty much a new show shot about 10 years later
Similar footage was spliced into this movie, bc I found the 88 version on YT a week or two ago
J
Definitely NOT a scenic railroad for some. The Cumbres and Toltec “scenic” railroad is anything but that. My wife and granddaughter drove hundreds of miles and incurred hotel fees just to go on this train. There scenic seat was a paneled wall. Not a window. Just a wall. Any reputable railroad would have removed those seats. Nobody goes on a scenic railroad to just look at a wall. Remember some businesses have no ethics and greed reigns supreme. The Cumbres and Toltec railroad is the embodiment of those sentiments.
Extremely, quintessentially abhorrent business practice if you’re the unlucky one!
