    Just before Mosley got caught with that big right hand, the camera shot from behind Forrest told the story. At 5:50 in that round, you had a view looking over the shoulder of Forrest. He had been throwing long right hands and barely missing until then. He threw another at 5:51, and you could see how dangerous those shots were for Mosley. Shane was very close to Vernon, and he must have underestimated his long reach. Shane had his hands down far too low, and it looked like it was a matter of time. I saw that, but I just thought Mosley must know what he's doing, even though it looked like he was wide open.
    Mosley really got hammered, even more so when he was hung on the ropes. It's a miracle, and an indication of how tough Mosley is, that he survived that round. When he bounced across the ring to the opposite corner, he got nailed again by some hard shots. I think that overall in that round,....Mosley took 4 shots that were knock out punches for some guys. Can you imagine, for example,......... Amir Khan getting hit with those shots?

    Say i with me ladies and gents...STYLES MAKE FIGHTS. Mosley, for all his prodigious skills, was tailor made for Forrest's straight shots and 1-2 punching. Because while Mosley came at you with aggression, it was controlled. Conversely, a guy like Mayorga was bad for Forrest because he was wildly unpredictable and had the ability to turn Forrest in to an undisciplined fighter instead of the measured tactician that dismantled Mosley twice.

    Its difficult to say about the Hall right now. Shane Mosley is pretty much the only big name on his ledger. The losses to Mayorga, generally thought of as a club fighter, the gift decision again Quartey and the injuries he faced throughout his career will make it difficult to vote him into the hall, at least on the first ballot.

    @tlig Před 14 lety

    @goonookanooka He was forced to take the fight after facing three gimmes of HBO. He had to choose between Forrest and Winky. In fact Vernon had baulked at the initial offer (this fight was scheduled to take place at the end of 2001), leading Mosley to negotiate with Winky instead. Winky wanted even more money on the basis of him being the champion (@154). Mosley was forced to go back to Forrest with a better offer. This was supposed to be a unification but Forrest was stripped during all this.

  • @brixtonmystery
    @brixtonmystery Před 12 lety +2

    No, I meant in between 140 and 154. Last 140 fight was Gatti. Then Mitchell - 147. Judah - 147. Baldomir - 147. Three fights at 147. Then 154.
    Oscar fought Floyd differently than Floyd fought Marquez so that's a moot point.

    @tylersfs Před 15 lety

    Vernon is a great slugger, but Shane the better boxing skills and faster hands by far. He caught Forrest with a SOLID right with 1-min. left in round 1 - Forrest wobbled.
    Shane was mentally defeated once Forrest landed the big right. The second fight - in my opinion - was MUCH closer than the judges scorecards reflected.

    LOL@ 7:43. Shane was out on his feet and the whole minute on his stool. One thing I noticed was the referee seemed to try and give shane all the breaks he could like at 6:51 including helping Shane steady himself at 7:27 and not counting all the way till 8 which he should have since there was no saved by the bell rule. R.I.P. vernon Forrest.

    @goonookanooka Agreed. He took bad fights, against guys like Forest & Cotto, etc who were VERY hungry for glory. But that's Mosley. He just takes the fight as soon as it's offered. I never heard of a fight that Mosley turned down. But it was mismanaged. Someone should have been there to say, NO! You beat De La Hoya, you got the chips, you got the pocket Aces, you can fight whoever you want.
    It's the century old boxing story of the pure fighter mentality in boxing that hurts their career.

    As close to 100 as he could be. The Marquez that won 9-10 rounds vs Pacquiao last November would lose 11-12 to Mayweather at any weight at any time. The SKILL disparity was too great. In that case, size, strength, speed etc etc do no dot matter

    @goonookanooka I agree with you on most of what u said. Personally i think it was a good fight for Shane. I believe that if u are pvp #1 u should be fighting good fighters in there primes that are in your same weightclass. It seems that when these guys get to the top they start cherry picking ( yes i mean floyd and manny). Shane was the best and he tested his skills against a good fighter.

    Floyd is a natural lightweight, junior welterweight at most, so yes, of course it counts as a bigger challenge. Cotto outweighed him almost 20 pounds on fight night! However, I would personally like to see him take on Andre Ward at 160, if Ward could get to that weight. That's the only challenge for either man.

  • @tlig
    @tlig Před 14 lety

    I always thought Forrest got the worst of the head clash because he actually got hit in the face but I believe neither guy was THAT affected by it, they both tried to milk it initially.

    Two things, Floyd's size- reach and height won't be a problem for mosley.
    Floyd unlike forrest, is not an agressive boxer who comes at you with combos.
    To the floyd fans, when was the last time you saw floyd aggressive with his jab or combo? Floyd will need more than just counter pot shots to keep shane off of him.

  • @thewandering01
    @thewandering01 Před 15 lety

    Nah, Smoger (the ref) is as honest as they come. At 6:51 he wasn't letting Shane lean on him, he was wiping Shane's gloves after they rubbed the canvas. Otherwise it would be getting grit into Forrest's eyes the next time Shane hit him.
    If he was trying to cut Mosley a break, he wouldn't have called the second KD a KD, would have just said that Shane stumbled. Refs do that all the time.
    RIP Vernon, good fighter, good man.

    I'm not saying size NEVER matters, I'm saying it didn't matter in this particular fight. Look at the fight. I don't think there was any point except maybe one moment where he had Marquez cornered where the size played a factor.
    It's the same with Floyd, he can't make 154. In his two fights at that weight, he's weighed 148 and 147 on fight night, respectively. Remember, Floyd jumped from 140 to 154 in three fights also.

    @Tusc9969 Před 14 lety

    I've always said that mosley never belonged @154. Winky imposed his size with his deadly constant jabs and one twos combo AGGRESSION! He also used an impenetrable (peek a boo) defense that made it almost impossible for mosley to score. That is what beat mosley twice...not running around the ring. While winky's a tech boxer, he's a different style than floyd. Floyd's a counter puncher and would need to be as agressive as wink or vernon to beat shane not JUST running, countering, and pot shots.

    I agree with you, however I think you are giving Shane a little too much credit. Don't get me wrong, he's a fantastic boxer and could very well win this fight if he lands a big shot. Problem is, he is going to have to find his range and find it fast or else this is going to be a long night for him. Just because Mosley is taller and has a longer reach doesn't really mean shit. Look at Corrales, he was taller, stronger, and got destroyed. If Mosley finds his range though, look out.
