The hotel at the left 0:59 was Hotel International in Mamaia. I stayed there in the summer of 1975 for 6 day's. At the same time US president Ford was in Romenia too. I have seen him in Brasov some day's later in the lounge of our hotel from a distance of just a view meters when he walked, surrounded by a bodyguard, into the hotel. It became the most amazing unexpected holiday surprise ever, far behind the Iron Curtain sleeping in the same hotel at the same night as the US president.

Awesome bit about Romania, my home country.
Nowadays Mamaia has mostly only nightlife and is full of "rich glamour" or dare I say glamour kitsch with luxury clubs/ buildings/ yachts and cars, Sinaia is still awesome and grew a lot as a ski and mountain bike resort plus the architecture is mostly unchanged and Constanta is...well...just a city with some badly planned roads and some sort of port. Brasov is still one of the best cities in Romania with awesome architecture, lots of very good hotels and very good service.

70s were the best, Romania was a star at that time, economically and politically. Even Ceaușescu was viewed as a progressive leader, not following blindly the regime in Moscow. Don't forget that Romania was the only one opposing and condemning the invasion of Czechoslovakia. If you don't know, go Google it, terrible.
However, they fucked it all up in the 80s though, big time with the restrictions, especially those imposed on the population. Bread, milk were rationalised, all other food was scarce. A lot like in GB during and after the war.
The ambition was to pay off all country's external debts. By the end of 80s they succeeded and Romania was the only country in the world with ZERO debts! The impact on the population was huge although the people were more optimistic, smiley and friendlier than nowadays.
This, a lack of vision plus the global changes at that time lead to the fall of Ceaușescu. Some external push was also believed to help with the violent regime change in the context of the general world and Europe politics at that time, the glasnost, perestroika, Gorbachev etc.
Anyway, lovely country, lovely, smart, warm people

in 1979 I was like 5 yrs old and i can remember how it was as a kid. Mamaia and Constanta were bursting with tourists. Everything was far cleaner and much greener than now. Nothing of the disgusting buildings that suffocate now Mamaia and make it really ugly. As this BBC guy is pointing: the beach and teh sea were clean. exactly the opposite of now. It was also quiet - no boxes with stupid loud music- it was like is still now in Greece in many areas by the sea. There were those excellent restaurants in the so-called Mamaia " village" - an excellent idea - every traditional house from every historical part of romania with its own architecture, with waiters dressed in the traditional costumes of those houses with very good food from those areas and with live traditional music and dance (sometimes) from those areas as well. An excellent place which would have attracted the attention of british turists who do like traditions. None of that is specified in this BBC short doc. Everything is meah, beah, so-so, passable, acceptable but nothing out of the ordinary. Of course, the dirty and smelly streets of India are far more interesting then Europe and the communist Romania or even capitalist Romania or Easter Europe.

In this filming, there are two different worlds. The cameraman was very misleading, he filmed only the areas strictly reserved for the party 'friends' and for foreign tourists. Those 'goodies' you see in the video were not accessible to the regular population. Footage is from a seashore place where the party members had huge private villas, private restaurants, pools, etc. We could not even walk there, those places were guarded. The regular population was suffering like a stray dog. Romania was a big hungry, depressing prison. All import foods would completely disappear in the 80s. As of 2023, it's exactly the same way in Cuba and much much worse in North Korea.
