  • Jessica's talk is going to discuss the use of mindfulness meditation (a meditation technique which has you focus your attention on being in the moment) to improve well-being and academic success. Jessica believes this will fit in well with the theme as mindfulness meditation is a small technique that can be used as frequently or infrequently as one wishes, and still produces major benefits. Mindfulness meditation is a relatively new area of study in Psychology (only being around for about 35 years), yet it is producing such promising results such as an increase in anxiety, improvement in general well-being, decrease in negative emotions and feelings, and many other benefits. But there is so much potential for this technique as it is still being studied and we are learning more and more in the field. Jessica Kotik is a senior Psychology major here at Kent State University. She plans to attend graduate school for School Psychology. She is the President of the Psychology Peer Mentor Program, a mentor for the Provost’s Leadership Academy, and a sister of Sigma Delta Tau. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends, traveling, acting, and dancing. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The difference between prayers n meditation is that prayer is aimed at God (externally) while meditation is aimed at you (internal). Prayers is to fulfil your duties as a Muslim compared to meditation which aimed at knowing yourself

Loved this! Just noticed the description under the video says 'yet it is producing such promising results such as an INCREASE in anxiety'- i'm sure it does the opposite and REDUCES anxiety? Loved the TedX itself.

Yoga Education, on the other hand, aims at taking care of the individual. Changing lifestyle patterns can improve your health and ayurvedic herbal supplements from Planet Ayurveda can be really helpful in this keeping you healthy and mindful.

Can I add...? Using a natural, relaxing voice helps. Meditation, concentration, healing....all those processes (and more) need natural soundwaves. I really don't know what happened to you, Americans, and you have adopted a robot-like way of speaking....but, please, try to reject that. It's not useful, does not make you look smarter or trendier, it's the exact opposite. It’s not therapeutical, and it makes a few others unable to follow, as this "robotic-high pitch voice" is extremely stressing.... Anyway.... Just a note...not an attack. Take care.

@@jessicakotik1584 I think the pitch and tone in this specific video that were uncomfortable were primarily due to nerves. Being on a stage in front of a bunch of people.
I do not imagine anyone being very eager to record a meditation track meant for therapy, while their limbic system is activated. Pitch would make a meditation track less effective in a subjective way, but that is a part and not the majority of this talk, and was likely intended to impact the live audience.
We speak faster when we are nervous. If you've ever had a school presentation with a time minimum, and practiced at home vs with an audience, it is very inconvenient how quickly we start to speak, when even a little bit nervous! 😅
Actors and politicians and many speakers pay loads of money to learn a more universally appealing voice, as well as training in body language and facial expressions to most effectively get their chosen message across. The time and resources needed to alter one's accent and voice is a luxury not everyone has access to. Perhaps this is why this "normal" speaker stood out, she isn't a highly trained public speaker, and her nerves show. That doesn't make the information any less valid.
Unless your intended audience is from a different location, accent isn't something you need to be judging yourself over. Many people enter the public sphere to share their experiences without stage training; they do pick things up along the way, with every speech. The flow of our voices does not make the things we share any less meaningful. I do consider the audience very important, though, when planning and presenting any type of communication.
So it totally depends on you, what you want to do, and who you do it with. If you don't want to worry about it, don't! Please! We do not have to step onto a global stage to have a positive effect on the world. That is simply one method of billions. 😊❤
