    Hey, because you also did engineering like I want to do, can I ask how much time you had with the course for spare time and how many societies did you end up joining?

    • @jordanebert3313
      @jordanebert3313  Před 3 lety +1

      Personally I didn't join too many societies but that's mostly down to the costs, for example most sports teams require gym membership, kits and standard membership fees.
      Regarding free time, the uni assumes we work for about 40 hours per week including lectures, so with about 20-25 contact hours in engineering, we reasonably spend 10-15 hours a week studying on average (granted it's a bit more nearing exam season). I feel I have enough free time to do all the things I want, it just comes down to time management I guess

    Hi I'm studying Beng engineering maths at uni in September, are there any recommendations you would have in terms of preparation? I havent studied a level physics but I have further maths. Also how much 'hands on' experience is there on the engineering maths course?

    • @jordanebert3313
      @jordanebert3313  Před 2 lety +1

      It's worth watching my other videos on my experience with eng maths if you haven't already, but in a nutshell you don't really need to do any prep (maybe some coding if you want a headstart, but it's not necessary) and there aren't many hands on components, at least there wasn't in my first year. You get computer labs and some project focused assessments, but those are mostly code/research based unless you pick something more practical in your final year. In year 2 you do thermodynamics (which might actually be a first year module now) with a hands-on engines lab, but that's just 2 sessions and mostly taught in lectures otherwise

      It'll be impossible to give you a take on Bath haha but Bristol is nice, my understanding is that Bristol have a more research focused path with the city being known for its influence in the aero sector, so you will probably get better industry connections here too, but I can't really confirm anything! Bath are a top university albeit not Russell Group and the city is a fair bit smaller than Bristol, but I'm sure you'd enjoy studying at either institution

      Haha don't worry about your English! I actually have a few international friends and I'm aware we're building a new "global lounge" for more home and international students to meet, which I'm quite excited for! Bristol has a relatively high percentage of international students and I think you're an important part of out student culture, so you'll definitely enjoy yourself here. Personally I don't know much about stoke bishop, but my understanding is that the city centre is more diverse (mostly as we have the cheaper halls and are self catered) but honestly it's hard to say. People generally love whatever halls they go to so I wouldn't worry too much, otherwise you can transfer at any time!

    • @jordanebert3313
      @jordanebert3313  Před 3 lety

      I've heard good things about that course but it's not exactly a 50/50 split, I think MechElec guys work about 30-50% more than regular engineers BUT have a bit more flexibility in modules so it depends on your work ethic and what you want to get out of the degree. Any engineering degree at Bristol is a good choice, it's mostly about option choices and your longer term career choices! Hope that helps, I'd recommend attending an open day and speaking to someone on that course if you have more questions

Generally, my friends who studied maths or CS enjoyed it but I don't have any insight into the joint program. As with most Russel Group unis, the research exposure here is really good and the engineering department is getting a lot of funding at the moment, so you'll get to use some innovative technologies through the CS side of your degree. For maths, we've literally just finished building the Fry Building which is much bigger and (supposedly) far more comprehensive than the old maths building, though no one's been in there yet

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! I don't know anyone who did straight economics or philosophy, but I know people who did joint degrees (e.g. econ and finance or physics and philosophy). Econ is a safe degree I think, not too difficult compared to maths or engineering but still very employable and offers great flexibility with modules. I'd look into the degree requirements and decide which pathway gives you the most flexibility, as I think EFM, for example, will have more mandatory units than straight econ.
      Philosophy I can't speak to as much, but I think those who do it with maths/physics have mixed experiences as the writing component can be tough for people who don't like essays or a welcome break from those who don't like too many numbers/equations. I suppose it comes down to preference, but worth noting that econ programmes are quite essay heavy too!

      It is, I have a job on campus within the inclusion team and we're doing loads to build and maintain spaces for people of colour! Bristol itself is very diverse too, even for someone who lives in London I find Bristol to be quite familiar

    Hey, do u believe bristol is better than nottingham?

    • @jordanebert3313
      @jordanebert3313  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey man, I’ve never been to notts so it’s hard to say, but I’ve heard great things about it. I think Bristol edges it out in terms of quality of education but students seems to have more fun in Nottingham, either uni is a great choice! Employers generally pick Bristol grads over Nottingham grads (which is something to consider) but you’ll be fine wherever you go realistically, I recommend you attend some open days if you haven’t already

      @@Rockandrollsb Just based on opinions from the people I know who study there. I suppose by "fun" I'm referring to the typical "fun" metric for students, being nightlife and societies. If you enjoy staying in and watching a movie then I'd put Bristol ahead as it's a bigger city with better food delivery options 😉
