  • I'm running 5,3,1+ a lot extra and today's lift calls for 350 lbs x 1 on the bench press. I'm 50.
    Comments are the best.
    Should I have a spotter?
    How's my Form?
    Will I recover from this?
Should I enter a competition? If so - what sort of competition? I've only done one and it was a strongman. I was a lot older than the other competitors.
    Am I on drugs? (no)

    That's great. I am 52. I'm going for 350 too.

@@jamesTWisco there are plenty of guys our age stronger than ever. I was chatting on messenger with a buddy of mine I haven't talked to in years. He's a big guy and a little older than me. He just started lifting in Aug of last year. He's squatting over six hundred, deadlifting over six,and reps 315 for 5 sets of five. I'm doing 320 for five, deadlift over five, and don't do squats. Could just don't. I have a ton of hyper energy and lifting calms me down

@@user-ni8hq2uv4u in my real life I never see anyone lifting heavy at all. I workout at Anytime Fitness sometimes and I realize it's not exactly a powerlifting gym but they have squat racks and a deadlift platform. I rarely see anyone benching over 2 plates or squatting over 3 or deadlifting more than 2 (not sure why they bother). Other gyms I've been at there are heavy lifters but guys are a lot younger. I did a strongman 2 years ago at 48 years old and the next oldest guy was 36. Then I see channels like fit over 50 and the like - they all recommend light weight. One guy is constantly hounding super slow eccentric for "old lifters". The other thing is - don't take risks. Basically your fitness should be to get a shovel, dig a deep hole very slowly with long breaks - then climb down into it, lay down and accept your death. No thanks.
Get your squats in. You haven't lived until you start pushing up from the hole and suddenly your body starts going back down again.

Benching alone with weights that you struggle with is not smart. You should be benching in the rack with pins and never use collars just in case you need to dump the weight

      Thanks for the tip!

I have always lifted like this (I don't usually try 1 Rep maxes) but the fact that I could die if I fail is a powerful motivator. Lifting with unclipped weights is not my favorite because if I get a little off balance I can't correct. Of course I'm trading safety... I will try one more 1 Rep Max before i switch out the flat bench press for 12 weeks. Either I'll die or be in a much safer zone soon!
