      the PC desk itself is meant to be budget, not the components in it

    • @GunslingerKenung
      @GunslingerKenung Před 7 lety +6

      Well custom length cables from them while certainly not a cheap option aren't exactly very expensive either. In reality you would only need 3 custom cords. 24 pin, a dual pcie 6+2 pin and a plug for the motherboard power on the top left corner (Depending on whatever it requires) which would be 75$ without tax or shipping. Not super expensive depending on the budget you gave for the desk itself. Another option would be to simply plan around the lengths of cords you have on hand or can easily order online. You have to remember Linus likes to show the most balling way to do anything so this is more like a rough idea to show people than a step by step DIY. He's most likely going to stick insane non budget parts in there like a gtx 1080 + i7 6700k or maybe the extreme 58xx whatevers.

    You should probably pre-drill MDF and use screws, wood glue can start to let go before long. Since you paint MDF, using screws isn’t an issue as you can putty and then paint over them. Anyway cool project, just needs to be held together ;)

      Cabinet grade plywood would have been way better. It could look really nice with a stain too. Also, with cabinet grade plywood, as long as you don't get too close to the edge, you don't have to predrill it, because the plywood is a lot harder than MDF.

      Well I was just thinking how cool it would be to have two different PC's in one desk and having two Intel PC's would be boring and repetitive. You could use it for benchmarking and stuff. I'd use my Intel PC for gaming and editing and my AMD PC for multimedia and word processing, etc. I would also have two monitors so I could use them side-by-side.

    This is fun, I watch a lot of woodworking CZcams channels where the end product is a perfectly designed item, pre-planned and totally thought out from the start with razor sharp cuts and perfect joints.
    Watching a bunch of smart non-woodwork people figure it out is great - if I were building my own PC desk, this is pretty much how the process would go too.
    Although... why isn't the motherboard IO and video coming out the back of the desk? I'm not sure I'd want video cables coming out the side when my monitors are at the back. I'd also build in a power strip to plug monitors, etc into to remove that annoying mess of power leads that sits under every PC desk.

    • @taiiat0
      @taiiat0 Před 7 lety

      hm, you could if you left enough space at the back of the system to have cables come out the bottom rather the back i guess?
      not as convenient though.

    • @kedwa30
      @kedwa30 Před 7 lety

      Good idea to have a built-in power strip. Computers used to be made so the monitor's power plugged into the back of the power supply. I'm thinking of the old IBM XT's that were in my high school in '91.
      A desk is so much of a clutter catch-all that it would be better to design this to hang on the wall until you want to use it and then you pull it down to desk form when you need a desk. That will keep the clutter off it. ;)

    I've been thinking about and designing one of these for myself for over a year now. Good thing my dad works for Guardian glass and can get me a piece any size, shape, cut, color shade, and edge I want for like $5-$20! I never realized how expensive glass is to order custom if you don't have an in somewhere.

    Hey Linus, don't know if you're still looking here but for clearing up those face up edges/imperfections another fairly easy method that people also use for hiding plywood edges is using a thin layer of spackling and then sanding it lightly with a fine grain. Works fairly well in my opinion. Cheers. \o/

    another alternative on wood: if you have access to a wider range of wood working related tools(planer, jointer and the large gluing clamps), you can pretty well save all cost on wood if you use pallets. Well picked ones can turn out surprisingly nice :p not to mention it is quite fun building a desk/table this way.

Sadly i wont be able to copy 90% of this build, because of preferences in both hardware and the physical desk shape. But thank you Linus and friends for giving me the inspiration for something amazing

      Also you could add some of that trim that your dad put on at the end to create a Lip that fits around the outside of the glass (or router it so it fits under and around), it would cover the edge, look intentional and prevent the glass from sliding around.

    If you don't care about looking at the PC you can take the easy way out and get a 1U , 2U or 4U housing and mount it under your desk bottom side up and use it with or without a lid to hold all the parts for your PC. they can be modded to work with what ever you need them to fit and give a solid base for a desk PC just remember to mount it with the IO shield facing to the back of your desk to mount all the cables .
