A lot of the folks here in the western world are struggling with jobs and the cost of living are insanely expensive. Peoples are ready to throw in the white towel, they’re worn out and feeling trapped in their own world.
Young man, I’ve been to Vietnam twice now….absolutely loved it and the people….not to mention the FOOD!

Great thoughts. I've lived in two different countries (Australia, and Germany). It is actually invigorating to enjoy new customs. I've started learning Vietnamese and will check out VN in October to see if I want to retire there. Thank you for your time and posting. I've still got shirts I haven't worn since 1997. :) But I can fit everything I own in my Honda Accord trunk. If my visit works out and I retire in VN, I'll be doing the same, with two carry-ons. Don't need to work, Soc. Sec. and VA Disability Benefits equalling US$42K yearly, tax-free. :) Ya know what is great, none to very little graffiti. One main reason I didn't like Ecuador and Portugal. Thank you again.

My friend wants to escape Vietnam and joins American's Drag race.
Mostly because USD have more purchasing power than VND and Because even minimum wage in the USA is already count as wealthy in vietnam (is it barely living in the USA though )

Wow, 7 years in Vietnam and still there! That said something about Vietnam. I am thinking of going to Vietnam for a 3 month vacation.
Thank you for the transparency, insight, and inspiration. I was called out today at work to donate some clothes for the needy. my coworkers know I want to move overseas. I was thinking about Thailand but some guys living in Ho Chi Minh City recommended Vietnam. I want to retire in Da Nang and then go visit them in Ho Chi Minh City.
Vietnam is a great choice! I am a retired Aussie and have been living in Hanoi for the last 5 years. Life is good here!
Things I like about Vietnam besides the obvious.
1. Sense of neighborhood community
2. People don’t think you’re a weirdo if you walk up and strike a conversation
3. Cheap medical costs
4. No insurance needed
5. No sales tax, property tax minimal
6. Not tipping culture
7. People happy to accept your business
8. A lot of things do not require appointments
9. Food comes out within 1 minute of ordering
10. Better breakfast food choices than America

1. Horrible air pollution
2. Horrible noise pollution
3. Poor sanitation
4. Lawless traffics laws
5. Dirty tap water
6. Corrupt government
7. Corrupt policemen
8. People always trying to scam you
9. Horrible infrastructure
10. Hot and humid weather
11. Bad customer service
12. It can be a racist country
13. People litter everywhere
14. People ride on sidewalks and park on sidewalks (no room to walk)

@@Chr1s8o8americas police and government are far more corrupt than vietnams. Traffic is what it is, you can either adapt like a man or cry about it like a baby. Sanitation isn’t that bad, worse than the US but not as bad as MANNYYYYY other places. Idgaf about noise pollution. Air pollution sucks but it’s improving as they develop. America is far more racist. The economy in vietnam benefits the working class far more than it does in the US. Infrastructure is improving and many of the cities are on par with much of the US. Customer service is amazing, you’re probably just a pos and got mad when they didn’t kiss your feet after you berated them. Weather admittedly sucks but you naturally adapt after a few years. Litter ain’t that bad either, it’s worse and more needley in LA, Portland and NYC.
im glad u brushed upon the financials, its one of the biggest factors when deciding to move anywhere. i lump ur first and second key points as "comfort" in my case i feel like im stuck in the middle of wanting to move but also keeping me staying put due to me being at a point in life where my job has been comfy enough that i can get by without too much worry on a low income salary living in expensive cali. if cost of living becomes too unbearable than i can see a change of scenery in my horizon. thanks for the video!
Someday I want to retire in Vietnam. I visit Vietnam every year to take a break from the rat race mentality that I was living every day. Even though I was making money, I wasn’t happy with the 9-5pm work schedule every day. Every day was just another day. It was not the exciting life that I wanted. I look forward to my visit to Vietnam every single day and it is the only thing I look forward to every year 😊
That would be a huge mistake. #1 VN has no retirement visa. 3 months only. #2 Pollution is crazy in the air and food and it will reduce your life expectancy. #3 you won't be able to safely walk around because of the traffic and motorbikes on the sidewalks.

A huge (huge) change in lifestyle as you know, not sure I agree with your strong recommendation to just go.
I also moved to VN and live here now. About as long as you have. But I do not think just moving is necessarily a good idea.
You make videos. I taught for a while, but am now retired. Also married here. For some it is a fascinating change, but for others it might be a mistake.
So I love it here, but I am not so sure I will recommend it to everyone, necessarily.
Be somewhat cautious, I think.
You are absolutely correct. No one size shirt can fit all. I think he is pointing out the things that you need to consider before moving here with the assumption that you already made that choice. If it were me, I would slowly put one foot in first to test the water before go all in. Most of the Vietnamese want to live in America than American want to live in Vietnam.

I feel the same way about America. I took the plunge and moved to Japan. Im incredibly happy here but I'm very curious about life in Vietnam. I will most likely move there next after i visit Saigon at the end of the year

Cool.Gotcha.I really needed a kick in my pants, It's a short life and I began visiting Alamos, MX and I started planting roots there over 10 years ago. Much obliged for reminding me this is already part of my life and it is another world for me.
This video really is perfect and hit home for me. I have four more years and I am so moving to Vietnam. I have to wait until my son goes to college and finish doing my job raising him as a single parent. But I really am looking forward to making the big jump!

After many year in America rat race in computer industry - Electronic Design Automation, since the day I left Viet Nam for the free world as political refugee --later became economic refugee because you jumped ship for stock options and salary increased, to study the real stuff -- computer engineering many many years ago.
I took early retirement in San Diego area, the weather here is nice and I play pickleball 3 times per week Monday/Wed/Friday with the membership around $100/year, I lose my fat belly and ton of fat in the body because of new hobbies. My retired income is around $4000/month with no mortgage. Since I am vegan so I cook for myself since my wife passed away last year, and spend less money to buy junks, so every month I find out I can save at least half of the money. When you was young you made more and you spent more for clothes, cars, a few vacation oversea every year, ....When you are no longer young then you spend less and because you already have too much junk, such as clothes as I have more than 100+ , so many years I do not have to buy any clothes, shoes, jackets, ... . I am thinking about living oversea Thailand, Phillipinne, Viet Nam, ... about 3 months per year for the change, my friend told me that the cost of living in Viet Nam is not cheap, may be because he is meat eater, drinking, .... too much. Viet Nam is the good choice because of the vegan diet and the language. I got BS degree in Viet Nam and a year later I left for America. So rent a room for 3 months in Sai Gon, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Da Nang ,.... each year one city to try it out after many decades stayed away from them.
Well Tyler you make me want to pack up and move to VN. Sadly, as you well know, I have a big problem getting rid of the mirror in the garage and the huge box of clothes! Plus there are so many sentimental items that I don't want to part with. But an alternative can be storing certain things prior to moving. Just a thought. I think the answer for me is to visit and travel as opposed to making a huge move. But I am so very happy that you have found what makes you happy. As a parent, that is all you really want for your child. Keep up the great content!❤

I am listening very closely to this video right now.. I'm living in Vietnam.. Trying to figure out if I love it or hate it... I guess it's difficult for me cuz I'm from the area used to live.. And I live 20 years in Florida and most of the time in Cocoa Beach right next to one of the best surf spots for the beach house but the same crappy weather as Vietnam but living in luxury with my surf stuff barbecues and Artisan swimming pool... Now I'm living low here in Vietnam without the conveniences.. So I will finish watching your video now.. Thank you so much for the info

I think it all comes down to a mindset. If the first thing people think is a NO when hearing Vietnam, then there's not much you can start convincing them. Yet VN is no where as good or clean as Western or Japan, but VN has been changing and getting better - people need to give them credits for it. USA is great for some, is bad for others - if you have lots of money, you can live anywhere in the top 10 best cities list. But if your money doesnt stretch much in the States and your daily life is not adventurous, then moving to a new place is not a bad idea. Just do research thoroughly before committing to it. If you move to a foreign country to live and work temporarily, you're an expat, but if your move is permanent, you're an immigrant.

If you are thinking of teaching English do your research and watch out for Vietnamese schools recruiting via agents in your home company, work permits, and what taxes you'll pay.

2 questions....1. do you have to have a bachelor's degree in order to teach English out there? I only have an as I understand it you can really only be there for 3 months on a visa so how is it that you're there so much longer? It seems like the cost savings really only starts taking effect after 3 months

What District do you recommend to live in and how much would you need a month ($USD) to live very comfortably? I appreciate your videos!
District 1 or Binh Thanh…very comfortably is very relative but I would say $2k +
So, what kind of VISA do you get to remain there all year? No one ever covers that. E-Visa is only only good for 90 days, no?
If you apply for work permit visa you could stay longer over there in VN, the policy changing all the times
That's also my concern.
90 day e visas for tourism and then temporary residency cards from 2-5 years for work or marriage
@@BigTimeBentley I'm already married to a girl from Vietnam, but she moved to the US as a teen. So I'm not sure how that may or may not change anything. I assume I'll have to ask the embassy soon in preparation. Can't wait!
@@skillz4realz1 If she still has Vietnamese citizenship then I would think she would be able to sponsor your TRC (temporary residency card) but yeah it would be worth asking a lawyer here in Vietnam for more specifics on that type of legal advice. The Embassy may be able to give relevant advice too. good luck!

Foreign English teachers in Vietnam can make 3 times the average Vietnamese persons working in the factories. Consider that's a privilege, nice to have without taking risk spending time and money in your country to get a degree without job guaranty after graduate.

Dicey. Be careful what choose to eat when you are out there. It happened to me and my family.

Ho Chi Minh City is better than Hanoi. Stubble burning season (Feb-May) is the worst for air pollution in Hanoi since weather patterns blow all the smoke from continental SE Asian countries over to Hanoi but it mostly dodges Ho Chi Minh City. Beach cities offer the best air year round.

well overall the daily expense arent that high if you just live normal
now if you think of buying a car or foreign import stuff or a decent size house in vietnam especially within the city busy area , forget it theyre too expensive, car of any model are 3x the price from the US . so there's that to think about , cheap on the surface but it can be expensive depend what you wanna do.

When you think about it, lots of good food smell horrible, such as parmesan, stilton, munster cheese. Even foie gras does smell but is delicious. Even boiled cabbage or cauliflower stink.
The bad smell from Viet food is due to toxic chemicals. Also because Viets openly urinate in the streets and sidewalks. Research it.
First step: leave your girlfriend
Step2: learn Vietnamese
Step 3: start eating Vietnamese food
Step 4: learn to live without AC, and get use to the heat
No thanks. I think I'll stay with my GF, stick with the most expressive and sophisticated language in the world, avoid toxic Viet food that causes cancer, and stock with AC. That way I can continue living my amazing life and building my career so I can retire with plenty of money with no worries. Moving to Vietnam from America is plain silly. Viets are desperate to escape to the USA.
But still be careful holding your phone while walking around.
Saigón is no solution as congested and noisy as it is, not to mention high and humidity. And Hanoi is extremely polluted.....
Cheaper The Country side of Nha Trang, Dalat, Danang..!!!
Pay attention to see if people wash their hands or if there is water to wash their hand after using the restrooms. Enjoy the street food prepared by those hands.

Escape one rat race to join another. Saigon driving/traffic is the biggest rat race on planet earth. Been there, seen it. Love the country, just not Saigon. Been with a Vietnamese women for 45 years who was born and raised in Saigon even she says after 3 days let's get out of here.
Becoz she is old regime people so she hates everything about VN, not just Saigon

I have been in America for over 50 years. I still have relatives in Da Nang. Moving back to my motherland would be difficult to adjust to a country I left behind. I would not be comfortable living in a country where the weather is humid, health hospitality, crime, jobs, the right to vote, cleanliness, and traffic. I can not leave behind everything that I work for and move to a country I know nothing about. I have no language barrier I am fluent in English, Vietnamese and speak a little Espanol. If I do decide to move to Vietnam I would have all my possessions shipped.

Freedom of what? Freedom of association, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the right to a healthy environment are severely restricted. The whole world knows Vietnam’s authorities systematically trample on human rights by punishing anyone for expressing their views about the government,”. Any voice supports for sociopolitical issues or even environmental issues will considered to be anti-State activities and will be arrested. Many people have been convicted for exercising their rights to freedom of expression or association under “vague or overbroad laws that criminalize protesting or criticizing.” So live and enjoy your life as long as you never discuss any topics above.
Vietnam is only good when you use dollars to spend. The natives there are struggling so much to make ends meet too. Honest jobs for an average Vietnamese to live on is nearly impossible. People there can be very aggressive to each other. There’re so many rules that only applied for the natives. In addition you’re not allowed to “own” land in Vietnam, only “use” it. So imagine you save your whole life to purchase a house, have a nice family and thought your life is good, but 20, 30 yrs later, the government would decide to take that piece of land that you house standing on. That is it. I’m not sure how they would treat foreigners about that issue, but that happened to many Vietnamese natives. So be careful about it! You just don’t know when the government would change its mind and take everything from you.
IMO it’s okay if you want to experience life in Vietnam or maybe to have a job there, maybe live there for couple of years to escape whatever you’re suffering in your home country, but devoting entire of your life there isn’t recommended. Vietnam isn’t simply a place for foreigners to live long term. It may welcome you now to have you spend your dollars, but after awhile it can chase you out when you don’t have anything to offer anymore. It’s a communist country after all. What do you expect? I just wanted to give my 2 cents as a Vietnamese who was born and raised there. I’m very happy and proud that many of you think highly of my country, yet I feel like it was my duty to warn people about it. Enjoy your stay in Vietnam if you’re already there or going to be. 😊
