- Here it is, the first episode of my 'Dakar Diaries'. Not many of you realised that I travelled solo to the Dakar Rally, with no team, it meant that I was the rider, mechanic, crew chief, tyre man, and of course cameraman! Apologies for any shaky footage!
One man. One bike. One box of tools. 14 days and 12,000 kilometres of hard riding.
I hope this gives a little insight into what went on over the first 48 hours of travel, I couldn't stop smiling as this was finally happening! Part 2 next week, where I introduce you to the bike and much more!
A massive thanks to all my personal sponsors and everyone who got involved to get me to @OfficialDakar Rally 2023.

Have to say this is one of the most user friendly laid out content I can use looking forward to this series.
It's great watching this, knowing how well you did. I knew you were good, but to finish your 1st Dakar, in the Malle Moto class is awesome. Much respect and admiration👍
Thank you
James, for us mortals, you're living the dream! TT winner, and Dakar racer!
As I already wrote ones on your channel, Greetings from you biggest fan in Serbia :)
Thanks Andrej
Great watching well done,
Thank you 👍
Awesome 😎
Hi james Love this,, just got your book off you at the grandstand, you were awsome as usual ,, best wishes Gina and george
The Dakar for the privateer riders compared to the experience of factory team riders is a completely different endurance race all together.
The factory riders have such a huge advantage over the normal riders, back at the bivouac and off the bike it’s not even in the same stratosphere at all! Big respect
Can't wait for next episode,Brown Sauce top man.
Other sauces are available
Great front wheel invention 🤣👍
Thanks! 👍 have to think on the spot sometimes..
Great effort, in the toughest class. Must of been bloody hard, but enjoyable. Something you will remember until your dying day. Look forward to the rest of the updates.
It was surreal to be honest.
Subbed to see your Dakar unfold. Love Malle moto.
Thanks for putting it on the Tube.
Awesome, thank you!
Right sorry for 2nd comment but you have arrived in Bahrain and I'm hooked how have I missed this.

Great stuff James. I'd heard you were having a bash at the Dakar, and heard a few things along the way this year, but just stumbled across your channel. Big up to you and yours. Now playing catch up.

Such a unique perspective on one of the planet’s greatest races. Keep ‘em coming!
Will do!
Great start to diaries....start of a great adventure and experience
That's the plan!
After all said and done, what was the greatest eye opener about the whole thing? I love the video
What a great and amazing achievement, big respect!
As a long time TT fan knew you could do it, as have watched you on numerous occasions coming down Bray Hill at full chat and that takes some big balls. Talented but humble and love the passion 🏍💨✊
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for everything, James.
Thanks for being involved with the pack!
Amazing James - from TT to Dakar, the 2 whackiest races in the world!! And the Malle Moto class no less! Looking forward to this series and a genuine thank you for taking us behind the scenes.
Great to see the reality of what goes on.
Brilliant James can’t wait for more
Thanks !
Really looking forward to seeing the Dakar from your point of view.
Coming soon!
Big respect to you James. Actually nice to see what is actually happening behind the scenes other than the racing everyday.
Thanks, I hope they don't become boring!
@@jameshillierracing always great footage. Keep it up!
Great to see this - can’t wait to see the story unfold even though we know what happened !! But will be great to see HOW it happened…On your own ….Malle Moto ….. 👏👏👍
That's the plan!
Impressive in how you've actually done the Dakar, massive respect in your hard work an camera man skills too.
Really going to enjoy these - the smile of anticipation and excitement is infectious
The smile does wear off!
Stoked for you. Some achievement. Well done. When you were expressing doubts I was like man you're a freaking TT racer. Best of luck in 23.
Thanks!
James, I don't know how you faired in the rally - but you must have huge ..... to even enter the Malle Moto in the first place. 👍👍
You know that little boy of yours wheel Is what made it all possible! LOL Hope you've given it back to him 🤣 Thx for sharing this, sooo looking forward to watching it. Hope you've recovered well. Amazing amazing amazing achievement👏👏👏💥💥
I did! Although I have to use is again next week when we collect the bike
🤣🤣🤣 you're bloody funny. Next time go for a hi top van maybe! Just an idea!
“Just me and a Christmas tree”; looking forward to this series and seeing your thoughts and feelings through the Dakar.
Thanks, I ended up being Billy No Mates a few times!
Great to see this content, thank you.
More to come on Sunday!
Just wow! IOMTT racers are a bit different. We know that. But you put that to the next level by competing the Dakar. In the Malle Moto class. You appeared several times in the german daily Dakar report. Congrats, legend! You rock big time!
Oh wow! Really? I wasn't aware
Yes, on Eurosport 1. The german commenter is Norbert Ockenga from Pitwalk Media. PS: I am looking forward watching the upcoming episodes of your Dakar adventure.
Had no idea you were even competing...let alone MalleMoto!! And I followed this year's Dakar! MalleMoto gets no coverage and is actually the only part of Dakar that really matters! Followed Lyndon Poskitt for a couple of years when he did it. Hard to believe you were "Nigel NoMates" being the IoMTT legend!
I think he's quite humble about that and doesn't need the extra attention.
Ah! I saw Hongyi Zhao a Chinese rider who walked behind you at the restaurant
I know it’s done now, and massive respect for your efforts, but feels wrong someone with you ability and skill being alone on this. Guess that makes the fact you finished even more of an achievement 👏🏻👏🏻 Legend 🙌🏻
Thanks
Hi James. Thanks for documenting this and well done for completing the Dakar. The physical side of training for the Dakar I'm sure is tough but well known. Could you say anything you did to prepare for mentally for the race and process; does it just come with the physical training you do or did you do anything specifically targeted to help increase mental bandwidth. Most people I meet don't have the bandwidth to operate a car safely let alone navigate the admin, race and maintenance burden you faced. All the best, Bill.
.. jeeze matey you couldnt have made it any harder for yourself - give us a call next time and I'll crew for you . .
What's more intense the TT or the Dakar
You actually look like those Arabs with that beard 😊
