I don’t believe eren was ever Ymir’s puppet. All she did was put the desire of freedom into him and let him go from there knowing where it will all lead up to. Because eren is how he is and the circumstances of the world, erens path seemed inevitable.
It was such a genius move to change the prespectiv from Eren (S1 - S3) to Armin. We were used to know what Eren thinks but this way the impact of Erens decisions and sacrifice just hits harder
