Awful yet hilarious! Smart Crossblade road test, in rainy England. In March...

  • Was it fun? I'm still not sure. British weather certainly added a different element to this Real Road Test of the roofless Smart Crossblade. This one is stopping off in the UK on its way to America. You may have seen it at Rustival.
    With a tuned 599cc engine and a true open-to-the-elements driving experience, it's fair to say that this was a driving experience like no other. The gearbox didn't even seem that bad...

    The problem that everyone always seems to have with the Smart gearboxes is that they're being driven like a true automatic when it's an automated manual with a single clutch - the gearbox expects you to lift off (like a manual) before changing. If that doesn't happen, it eventually changes anyway, jerkily, just like changing in a true manual without lifting off! You can often effectively tell it to change up just by lifting off at around the time you want it to change... It's not a slush box or a twin clutch system so can't change smoothly under high load as the act of changing gear can't happen instantly!

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis Před 2 měsíci +4

      I have a fortwo and a Roadster coupe and I really like the gearbox, though even I will admit the full auto mode is not great. The box rewards careful use e.g. lifting off during changes, changing before RPM gets too low or high and it changes by itself, and punishes incorrect use by giving slow, jerky shifts. This adds a level of driver involvement missing from more polished semi-auto systems.
      That said I totally understand how it got it's reputation, if you jump in and expect it to work like a DSG or semi-auto slush box you will be disappointed, it takes some learning to make it work well.
      The clutch does need to be adjusted/calibrated correctly to get fast changes as well, I suspect a lot of these older Smarts would benefit from this.

    This must have been a pile of fun. I would look at it as the feeling that a 16 year old gets on the first moped ride and realises that the fingers have turned blue with wind chill on a colder day. I've never driven a Smart but I can appreciate the engineering that went into them, I did hear that to change the oil the old oil had to be sucked out as there was no other way of draining it all out, it really was that compact. Personally given other choices to a Cross Blade, I'd go for a 2CV every time even if it costs more.

    • @PKWeaver74
      @PKWeaver74 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Completely correct about the oil change although most owners have converted the sump pan to one with a standard plug. I have a smart cabrio and also have converted to a standard spin on oil filter as well for better filtration and engine longevity.

    Ah, now for this one I can say I understand the driving experience. I owned a first-generation Smart, but obviously not one of these wee beasties - it was the slightly more sensible Smart ForTwo Cabrio. (How sensible a convertible was with Scottish weather is debatable...) That interior brings back a lot of memories, and the one thing that bugged me about these little cars was the faff involved in changing a headlamp bulb. As I recall, there was no easy access and it meant taking off that front panel just to get access to the back side of the lights.

    • @misterthegeoff9767
      @misterthegeoff9767 Před 2 měsíci +2

      Ihad a roadster and that was even worse, you had to remove the entire frunk liner and pull the plastic covers off the headlights, incredibly carefully because you *will* snap the plastic clips and then have to buy a new one that will never be the same shade of grey as the rest of the plastics around it. Ask me how I know!

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis Před 2 měsíci

      @@misterthegeoff9767I own both, I'd say the roadster is a easier than the ForTwo simply because you don't have to manhandle the entire bulk front panel which is quite awkward by yourself.
      If I had to change a headlight bulb on the roadside I'd definitely prefer the Roadster, but with a little practice the front of the fortwo can be removed in less than 10 minutes.

We found the engines can go on for over 300,000 miles, and we got used to the gearbox within a week, and found it incredibly easy, smooth, and fast to change, once you're used to it. The two big issues we had were rear brake cylinders that would only last about 18 months, and the steering rack was prone to issues after about 3-4 years. Other than that, it was a brilliant little car. ( Ours was a second gen. car though)

    What a mad machine 😂 also fun/useless fact, no. 450 corresponds well with the model code for this car - Smart 450 they called the first gen of Smarts
    That semiautomatic gearbox is totally fine as long you dont expect full automatic behaviors :D my boyfriend got himself recently a 2000 Smart with a nonturbo 45 hp engine. I thought it would be super slow but my god! It picks up so well, I had no idea. Up to 50/60 kph you can easily get ahead of everyone else, for more you'd have to wait a bit but still - 110/120 kph on a ring road is totally doable.
    Another fun fact - Smarts are so light they don't wear down their tyres. They age them 😂 My bf's 24 year old car with 192k km on the clock, came with two sets of wheels, summer and winter ones. Front summer tyres are still ORIGINAL. How stupid you'd have to be to drive on such old ones is beyond me, but the tread is all there if you dont mind the slight cracking on the sides.

Then it pretty much went down hill stylingwise from the gen 2 and onwards... Anyway - very entertaining to watch - I must admire your bravery, driving that thing at 100 km/h - wow! Also: Aging Wheels seems to be a man of great taste!

    I had a friend who had a Smart from new. The two things I remember about it are 1. The hilarious low-speed understeer (at 10 mph) in a Curry's car park, & 2. The glass roof exploding on the M1 one morning. The local Mercedes dealership didn't garner much praise for their service following that, definitely treated Smart buyers as second-class customers

    I own a smart 450 cabrio, I would say it's nearly as much fun and completely practical. Don't expect amazing mpg though, it's impossible not to put your foot down and smile as you hear the tiny turbo whir! always use the gearbox in manual mode and it's only really noticeably slow when you are accelerating as hard as possible up to the red line.
    Bought mine 6 months ago and it's completely got under my skin like no other car I've ever owned.

    I always found the way to treat the gearbox on these early smarts was like a pre-selector. If I was approaching a roundabout in 4th gear for instance, I'd hit down twice on the flappy paddles as I approached, continue around the roundabout and by the time I was exiting the roundabout the gearbox would usually have sorted it's life out. 3rd to 4th was the only shift that was a huge problem because the gearbox workedmore like a 3 speed with a massive overdrive. so you'd go 1st, 2nd, 3rd then the gearbox would put it in overdrive and go back down to 1st to give you 4th gear. Remapped ones are also way less of a pain with the gearbox, partly because the remap sharpens up the gear change a little, but mostly because the turbo coming on boost at 2000rpm instead of 3000 meant you didn't need to downshift quite so often

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis Před 2 měsíci

      None of the shifts were a "huge problem". The gearbox is organised as a three speed with two final drive ranges, but everything is shifted at the same time by a single motor driven selector drum, it's not like 3rd to 4th requires two separate operations in the gearbox. No need to shift down twice either, as long as the clutch is correctly adjusted and calibrated and you shift while the engine is in an appropriate rpm range the shift is quite fast. It's very easy to get caught out on roundabouts before mastering the gearbox though, if you let the RPM drop too much amd shift at around the same time as the ECU decides to shift then it takes an eternity to sort itself out.

      @ferrumignis Před 2 měsíci

      The Brabus cars do squat down quite a bit under hard gearchanges, but there's more weight forward of the engine than you might expect. The body structure uses quite thick steel to limit deformation in a crash. I believe the distribution is something like F 45%, R 55%.

    I recognise that Essar station in the outtakes. Never stopped there, but it was obvious on seeing the used car lot in Stretham. Also, if you ever want another luxury barge like that old XJ40 next time you're in this neck of the not-any-woods, there's a 1997 BMW 7-series in the used car lot in Chatteris opposite the Aldi. It's been sitting there for a year or so. Think of all the fun with the left-hand-drive wipers with the extra extension that clears a bit of the Corner of Disappontment but far from all of it. And then think of the ear-bashing you're going to get from soon-to-be-Mrs HubHut MkII for being seduced by wipers again. Fun for all the family!

      Good choice, despite the negativity from some they are excellent little cars for short-mid distance commuting and shopping etc (though I've taken mine on several 200+ mile trips). Presume you got a 700cc model with the peanut shaped lights?
      You may be aware but these are prone to burning exhaust valves around the 60k-65k mile mark, it starts with high oil consumption and the burnt valves follow. This is most always on cars that have had irregular/minimal oil changes. There is a one way breather valve located toward the back of the engine that goes into the inlet manifold right next to the throttle body. These degrade and get stuck open, allowing boost pressure into the crankcase which results in higher oil consumption, so check this. Fiddly but not too bad to change and not very expensive.
