Petes a savage. Always makes me wanna pick up my guitar when I watch him on the Andtertons channel.
+MikeGaming Agreed, he got the feels.
AGREE, he's a real F-HOLE
Jam around the 20-minute mark is possibly my favourite jam of these two ever. Fucking beautiful.
Wow Rob you really know your guitars, great job.
Thanks dude :-)
+Steven Chabot happy? now it's your turn write something in an different language, not every one on youtube speaks English as his native language ;-)
@Rob you're welcome ^^
+schissgring Keeping all those guys at bay that say that wood (or whatever else) doesn't matter.. showing that for some, with decent ears.. it does... fighting the good fight..
Except that great
vid when rob confused classic vibe for a custom tele...twice I think?
+schissgring what did steve chabot say?
Lee that solo in the outro gave me chills dude. Tons of feeling, loved it.
All great axes... but for my ears the ES339 Sounded the best.
"I have never seen Rob wearing that shirt." - Said no one ever. Great video btw
Rob and Lee,
Greetings from Texas! You guys make the most informative/entertaining guitar oriented videos on all of CZcams. Cheers!
I knew most of what you explained but the way you tell us is wonderful. You never talk down to us. Keep the videos coming.
Can't forget that Alex Lifeson of Rush plays the 335
+Mysterious Internet Guy It's actually a 355.
+Michael L. Thanks for correcting me. I was debating whether it was the 335 or the 355 since they look similar.
They look very similar. Easy to mix them up. :)
He's played both the 335 and 355 quite extensively.
Not at all. He's the one with the beard. On the left. Him. Not the beard. It's all over.
i feel like the 339 is the captain's guitar, it just suits him and he just killed that solo
He owns the 335 not the 339, just fyi.
Sven Schneider i don’t know why but the solo sounded very Iron Maiden-esque, as well as the chord progression chosen by Rob
there's something really magical about playing music with someone you really vibe with
That jam with the 339 and the f-hole LP... Oh my, so beautiful!
15:54 holy shit, I hope I will never meet Rob in the prison...
Hahahahahahahahahaa
Farrrrrk
I would've loved to listen to the Es-335 and the Es-339, with distortion!
I really enjoyed this video. keep up the great work gentlemen
That first jam with the 339 and the f hole les Paul, is by far the best jam I've heard on this channel. Beautiful job guys.
ES-335 too big: I've never held an ES-335 but I used to own an Epiphone Casino which is comparable in size. Before I got it I wondered if it would be uncomfortable to hold because of how big it was. I was shocked how comfortable it was. For it was VERY comfortable...much more comfortable to hold than my Gibson SG. I took it to a friends house who plays a Strat and a Les Paul. He played it and immediately commented how surprised he was how comfortable it was. I think those big semi-hollows get an undeserved rap.
+Wiser InTime Agreed! I once picked up an Ibanez semi-hollow, which is about the same size too, and actually - I even find a Les Paul to be not so comfortable... (strats ruined me)
But I actually loved it to bits! The sound, the feel... and it's pretty much as comfortable as a strat... so yeah... indeed.
Alvin Lee played a 335, pretty iconic. I'd say he's very heavy.
Thank you guys! That was fun! I thought the 335 sounded best but I absolutely love my ES-Les Paul! I almost accidentally tossed into the ceiling the first time I picked it up!
Amazing vid as always, seeing these wonderful Gibson gitars makes me wanna stop by the factory they are made since I live so close to it
I personally like the 335's tone and sound better, but there's no denying that the 339 is more comfortable, at least in my opinion.
caps face when rob went distorted lolol
Watching these with my eyes closed and guessing is really helping me hear difference in tones ^^
So awesome to hear something other than thrash or blues opening the video - what a great jam!
Alex Lifeson from Rush used them lots back in the 70's
devin townsend uses a couple of semihollow guitars in his set, and it doesn't get much heavier than some of his music
Really like how they can be smooth and then put out that little gibson growl that just hits you. Nice playing guys.
I always love these Gibson shoot outs. One of these days I will be able to afford one.
16:00 calm down. Don't break a hip.
Pete and the Captain should put out a blues album
+idolguns Agreed. The Captain was really on his game today.
I’d buy that
@@beng808 so you're the ONE!?!.
the captain should study and practice more
You guys are so inspiring, man! Rock on!
I love my 339. It’s like the in between of the 335 and Les Paul. The split coils are amazing and it’s pretty loud unplugged.
Dave Grohl plays the 335, he's a big rock star in my opinion!
+Onno Haagsma Is it a 335? It's got a Fender style headstock.
+jim leiss Firebird Headstock. Trini Lopez 335
+Yanneck Mock Thanks.
Just about to put this. The 335 in blue Dave has is gorgeous
+Onno Haagsma its a Dave Grohl special version, with diamond shaped holes
Pete can do no wrong.. I hope he was wearing his Crocs;-)
Those jams sounded great! Nice tones and cool playing.
Awesome demo :) some nice playing too. I need to learn that last chord progression so I can jam with a friend :)
Pepper Keenan (corrosion of conformity, down etc.) plays a 335. Super heavy.
DAVE GROHL plays a semi-acoustic
nonono nono Semi-hollow.
He plays a sig DG-335, with different F-holes
slash has played a 335 Lucille
I'm so jealous of what you guys get to do for a living! Hats off!! Muchos respect!
Pete is such an outstanding player, could listen to him all day. Beautiful guitar too Rob.
339 looks so cool
Dave Grohl plays some pretty hefty riffs on his custom Trini Lopez 335s (available for some years as his Gibson signature model, the DG-335).
+Richard Harrold One of the guitarists from The Ocean Collective plays sludge/prog metal on a ES-335 style Yamaha...
They may not be modern cool. But they sound great and they look great and looking good never goes out of stye!
@@mikecatania4492 it's just a shame that Gibson's pickups sound shit, and that their quality control does not befit their pricetags. If you get a good one, swapping in a pair of Bare Knuckle pickups and a vintage style wiring harness makes a big improvement to the sound. If you get a bad one, prepare for lifting frets, neck warping, and dismissive customer service... these days you're better off buying Japanese.
@@richardharrold9736 When did and why the decline in the quality? I am 64 years old and have been playing all my life. I always wanted 335 and I figured I better get one soon or I'll never get one. So I just started researching them. I never heard a bad one or herd of Gibson decline in quality. I haven't been following them either. So what changed?
@@mikecatania4492 Gibson quality has risen and fallen over the decades. The Norlin era (1968-81) is widely felt to be the firm's nadir, and that's why you got Tokai and Greco/Ibanez making copies that were more faithful to the late 50s originals than the Norlin guitars were (not that there weren't some cool Norlin era Gibsons, like the ES-347 and 369!), but things started going badly wrong again in the latter years of Henry Juszkiewicz's tenure, and since the bankruptcy and arrival of new management, things haven't got any better, they've just got even more arrogant and high-handed. Go and try a top-of-the-line MIJ Tokai, they absolutely blow Gibsons (custom shop reissues included) out of the water. The quality of timber used by Gibson these days is poor, their mahogany (since they got fined for violating CITES) has been force-grown crap, too wide-grained and full of cellulose wadding and grain filler, and not even a great set of pickups can save those guitars...
My GOD that Les Paul Rob is playing at the start is BEAUTIFUL.
Dayyyyyyyyyyummmm Cap10 Lee, that was a beautiful piece of playing there. :)
Cap's tone at 20' is great
Slash never really used hollow bodies but his GN'R partner in crime did. Pretty sure Izzy's main guitar was his ES-175.
I thought he was a Gretsch kinda guy
Nah man. ES-175. Richard Fortus uses Gretsches I'm pretty sure.
if you Google "Slash gibson es 335" you'll find several pics and videos of him playing 335's of many different colors!
+Mike Casey pretty sure he used a couple during the recording of the World on Fire album with myles kennedy last year
he has played a 335 Lucille in The Last Fight -velvet revolver video
great playing guys
The Captain sounds GREAT on the ES-339. Thank you guys for all the vids!
I'd be thrilled to own any of the four. That blue Paul was a real eye-catcher for me.
Pelham blue looks fantastic I agree
lee does that solo at 19 minutes that makes him ineligible to wear that shirt
Rob has a darn good ear!!!! He can hear the subtleties in the wood.
That ES Les Paul that Rob owns is friggin insane - has to be one of the most beautiful Les Pauls I've ever seen. That light orange color coupled with the dark back and sides is ridiculous - the contrast between the two makes it look stunning.
I guess this video was shot pre-pickguard removal
+MarkJohnsonMusic Makes sense
Lol
Tom DeLonge has a custom Gibbo 333, pretty much his strat turned into a 333 with a different pickup, and body type.
+Dylan Boon So a completely different guitar? Hahaha
That clean riff tho! It just makes me want to learn it. It's brilliant.
Lovely riff at the end guys!
As someone used to playing Strats, Teles, and Les Pauls, the 339 feels more comfortable to me, just cause it’s closer to the size and shape I’m used to.
Keep in mind, this is just my experience from playing a few in store
Captain Underpants….yess. Make em.
It is amazing how much better your videos are today🖖
HELPS ALOT! THANKS!
In back to the future i thought it was a Gibson ES-345
👆🏽It totally is
Fucking awesome to watch always a pleasure you two.
Thank God I was in a position to be able to buy an ES Les Paul with no F-holes. I havent been able to put it down since I got it 8 months ago!!
Thanks for turning me on to it Rob!!!
Love the TONE of The Captain's set-up at 19:50 ... So Desirable !
The Captain may not be fast, but he plays the right thing at the right time. Mr. Chappers is fast, but he only sometimes plays the right thing at the right time. In his final solo, he starts off a brilliant bit, really emotional, and then stops doing that and goes down the fretboard. Don't do that! That's my beef with shredders in general - you don't have time to appreciate the notes. Reminds me of that sequence in Amadeus - "Too many notes, Sire."
I agree with you. Rob has the ability to play with feeling and emotion, but he often ruins it by blasting out a fast run that is nothing but noise. I wish he would play the guitar, not shred the guitar.
Guys... it's Ted McCarTY. You're welcome. :-)
Chapman consistently nails these. Not only that, but he can explain why. That more than anything would compel me to buy one of his guitars.
Yesterday i was lucky enough to try a similar es les paul with p90 and i was blown away because of the awesome tones of this kind of guitar
Why does Georgia have the pickguard back on?
+chris beal This was presumably filmed before he removed it.
+DerekHartley correct
thanks. big fan, Rob
+Rob Chapman What was his comment? She looks so much better with the pickguard on!
+Richard Harrold Nonononono.....
I think chappers has something to learn from the captain on the vibrato front! I ove your playing chappers but sometimes its too vicious and severe (like the vibrato) and needs relaxing with things like dynamics, pick attack and vibrato speed and amplitude. Im not saying all the time, no way! but sometimes it does call for it. thats my two cents anyway; rock on!
HOLY SHIT!!! That jam after Rob picks up the the blue ES and The Capt. picks up the 339; gave me chills and I want to hear that as a full song!!!! JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!
That coffee mug gag gets me every time. I was even waiting for rob to much the mug down...I need to get out more.
For the harder rock guys, I have one, Shim from the Sick Puppies, Shimon Moore, Aussie, he used an ES-339 for hard rock/metal, I think he blocked it off though.
+DarkestofTimes ES-335* sorry.
+DarkestofTimes Chris Cornell of Soundgarden has an es-335 as well.
+HKDavedis a signature one at that
Dave Grohl plays a signature 335 that Gibson made him after they saw how much he loved the Trini Lopez siganture and calls that (the TL) "The sound of Foo Fighters"
WOW chappers ears are amazing
Thanks dude - even I was quite surprised :-)
Yes, quite impressive. Even more impressive though was the victory dance given immediately after learning of the results. 🕺
Impressive Rob! Great sounding guitars all around! Georgia is a beauty!
I love looking back too, but I do appreciate the new like my ML-1 Cap10.
Captain, is it time to add Anderpants to your merch selection?
+Nick Siepmann Boxers or Y fronts?
It'd have to be Y-fronts for maximum Superman points!
Blue man sticker motif on one of the arse cheeks..
a semihollow ash ml1 would be sick! ;)
...omg I want...
exept I want the ml3 version with an f hole.
why not both??
Just listening to that on headphones at my desk at work without watching. I got the blind test right! Quite pleased with that and the differences were pretty obvious to me. Would love one of the hollow LPs to finish my collection.
GREAT! do more like this ( blindfold testing!) its so nice to hear clean guitar tests, all distorted tests sound good, but this test had great tones and great playing by all 3- well done! Can you do a strat and robs new guitar comparisson, i love the strat sound, can it sound close to robs guitar?
Dave grohl plays an Es
Dave fucking grohl is the man
lol dem palm mutes XD
Grohl has a signature ES.
kickblake Yep but he doesn't actually use it much, he still uses trini lopez models because that's what his signature is designed off. The only signature one he actually plays is his pehlam blue one, and it's essentially a trini lopez model
slash has played a 335 in velvet revolver
Ritchie Blackmore helped invent metal on a 335
Best Vid Yet Great Jam very Smooth
Loving the clean Mayer-esque jams!
keep replaying 15:53 ;)
The bigger hollowbodies look better than their mini clones, just sayin`!
+Alf Pedersen I disagree.
You are allowed ;)
Alf Pedersen I've got a ibanze artcore Simi hollow bodied guitar love it
another great video
Great review. I particularly dug the jam on the f hole Les Paul and 339.
In back to the future, the guitar was a es345, not a 335. It wasn't invented yet thou!
If wood doesn't matter, then construction shouldn't matter. But then explain why the guitars in this video sound radically different.
+tMattLZ Thats what we've been saying for years, but some people refuse to listen to the guitars & just quote "science"! The debate will go on I'm sure....!!
+CaptAnderton I have to say, the general sound in this video(definition , clarity, "directness") is something i dont remember hearing on these videos. But i have heard it in all guitar paradiso :)
May i speculate that is the placement microphones and/or mixing?
keep it this way!
+Darko P I'm not sure what you mean. It's the same mics/interface etc as all the videos we shoot at Andertons.
Love the 2016 E335, enjoying mine.
19:20 amazing guys. Want a full version of that!
Slash plays an ES335 on the Last Fight - VR
Check it out
Matthew Aeschbacher I thought he played a 339, didn't he?
I'm a total sucker for hollow and semi-hollow guitars. That 339 looks great and man that Les Paul!!!!!! So classy with the f-holes. In terms of heavy players using hollow bodies: Dave Grohl and my man Lerxt. Alex gets such a great sound out of his 335 and 355.
+adam872 I'm like you and along the years I managed to own (both currently) an '67 12-strings ES-335 and a '12 ES-359, basically the same guitar as the ES-339 but with the Custom fancier black finish and ebony fretboard. Both are quite different from each other in each and every single way. They both look and sound great.
slash has played a 335 Lucille in velvet revolver
wow lee, that solo was immense! Very groovy
that was awesome. thanks
Chris cornel uses hollow body guitars.
+Simon Walker Gary Clark JR.
why do they call them f-holes and how can you say f-hole with a straight face...
shaped like an f
Because they're holes shaped like F's and we're not 16 fucking years old.
Trey Jenkins wow that was harsh but I probably would have said the same thing 😂
as in violins and cellos
***** Yup. And FYI i'm from Menlo!
This was edited very, they usually are but I really like the fade from the capt humming into the song itself. Very cool man
*very well
I always want to jam along to your intro's. You guys should put a jam album out.
