- As the music of J.P.Sweelinck is so close to many of you, here is music of one generation later - joyful variations by Samuel Scheidt on a Gagliarda by John Dowland.
Hope you enjoy!

Basically your home is becoming a musical instruments depot. Anja must really have a saint's patience. :D
Wow! That is just brilliant playing. Scheidt left such a wealth of fine music, sadly not often performed. Thank you, Wim!
Dowland's galliard is commonly known as "The king of Denmark's galliard". The full title though was this: The Most High and Migthy Christianus the Fourth, King of Denmark, his Galliard. No wonder Dowland was paid a ridiculously large sum when he worked as leader of the kings orchestra.
Awesome piece this one by Scheidt, and beautifully executed!
Sehr gut, Danke schön!!!
Che meraviglia questo clavicordo .il suono e lâesecuzione sono perfetti tutto merito del maestro.Grazie ancora .
Iâm really enjoying your channel. I have a Lindeholme style Clavichord double 8â the base. I especially liked your sweelinck Alien Gott. And daughter. Very very excellent playing
Regarding octave spans/key widths: there has never been a standard measure for the octave. Yes, there is an acceptable range, but it was up to the individual builder to either set his standard or to accommodate a request from a customer or to adjust to a regional standard of the period. Iâm not a piano builder but I suppose that an octave span could be as little as 15cm if a customer wanted it. In the 21st Century we are too accustomed to thinking in terms of standardized measurements. If in the future the average human hand were to evolve much larger the keyboards, if they still are built, would expand to accommodate them. If a performer doesnât like the average piano span now, with money, they can order a piano (or clavichord, harpsichord, organ) with a smaller or larger octave span.
Bravo!
This music always sounds so great on the clavichord.
Lovely playing. Iâve enjoyed Dowlandâs music (with the rest of the works from the English Renaissance) for a very long time. The variation was like an improvisation which might be its origin.
You make that clavichord sing like a lute and a chorus of trumpets.
Thanks!
beautiful sound
What a wonderful sounding clavichord, you soon forget what it is anyway, its kind of more like a lute piano hybrid but once the music takes over its as good as a piano, its perfect music for this sound, which is incredibly balanced acoustically, bravo, bring back the clavichord.
thanks!
This beautiful instrument has such a warm touch to it, that it's almost like it has nylon guitar strings.
Prachtig!
I love Dowland, and this variations by Scheidt are superbly played, thanks for sharing.
thank you!
Bravo! You manage to give the instrument a pungency that is just perfect for this joyful piece.
Beautiful !!!!!!! I'm simply amazed by the varied and subtle articulation and the dynamism that you get out of that instrument ! Great music wonderfully played ! Thank you !
Thanks!
Merci beaucoup. This video made my day, wonderful music.
Thanks!
Gorgeous variations Wim. Magnificent. Thank you!
I get this composer and Melchior Schildt confused because the last names sound similar to me. But both are really good!
Outstanding Wimđ¶đđ
Absolutely beautiful Wim!! I can't help loving Scheidt and this is a little gem.Made my day!!
thank you
You are called to breathe life into this music Wim.Thank you and Bravo!!
I love John Dowland and have numerous renderings of this Galliard, but I didn't know that arrangement for keyboard :) Nice!
Wow Thank you for this performens. Wonderfull.
Wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing.
Another GREAT video Mr. Winters, I knew it was going to be wonderful before I even opened it! Your fingerings allow for such effortless movement aswell, I love that! Keep up the amazing hard work, you and your wife!
Thanks!
really nice. thanks for this.
Great performance, Wim! The music is wonderful. My daughter is doing a transcribed guitar piece from the Renaissance era. So simply complex ... ahhh ...
Thanks Tom!
So beautiful! I am learning this piece now and I will use your video to learn how to play it! Thanks!!
Stunning performance and great articulation subtleties! How about some William Byrd on your Clavichord? Keep going these fantastic videos. Cheers from Mexico!
where are here the lute-players ???
Hello! :) (I play lute and theorbo amongst keyboard instruments)
present
Here!
If I wanted to learn the clavichord, what is the easiest and cheapest way to get one and to find pieces for it? I've always wanted to expand to other keyboard instruments
Instruments can be very expensive, but you can get them used. Check out www.harpsichord.com . This is the Harpsichord Clearing House located in Rehoboth, MA. The company sells harpsichords, pianofortes, and clavichords. I got my Italian Virginal and clavichord there. The instruments are not cheap though still.
The alternative is build a kit. Check out Hubbard Harpsichords at www.hubharp.com, and Zuckermann Harpsichords at www.zhi.net They also have operations in Europe as the Paris Workshop. These kits are not cheap either FYI.
There's plenty of music for the clavichord. For a 5-octave instrument, you can play anything from 1300 to 1810 on it. For a smaller fretted instrument you're a bit limited. The music is available in music stores and online. For free scores check out IMSLP at www.imslp.org
That's great man thanks for the information! I already expected this not to be cheap haha but it's so nice
John has given you the perfect answer, thanks!
#earlymusic FTW!
Sounds great! Clavichord is a more interesting sound than a piano, kind of like a woodwind reed, sort of.
Thanks!
Very nice piece - did'nt know of Scheidts version! Can't find the score anywhere - do anyone know the Scheidt-number and/or publisher? Thanx :-)
It would be interesting if you played Beethoven' s Waldstein sonata in historical tempo
it's on my channel - on clavichord- and I'll be studying the Waldstein on the pianoforte(s)
Nice variation, will Dowland be next?
not too familiar with Dowland's music, but what not is, can come!
In wich temperament are you playing? (Great perfomance, one of your best videos together with the ones where you play Sweelinck on the fretted Clarke)
I left my clavichord in the temperament it always has, Werckmeister 1707 (Wohltemperierte Harmonia)!
What's that to your left Wim?
A Frenzel 1820/5 pianoforte... more soon on that
AuthenticSound Can't wait to hear it. I do love a good pianoforte.
Oh, this performance is stellar by the way.
First!
Had I not written a "book", I would've beaten you. HAHA!!!
@@thomashughes4859 but you didn't
How does the articulation work on the clavichord? Why you don't play full legato if it's unfretted?
because that wasn't a real thing back in those days
@@AuthenticSound That applies to Bach?
