This is an experimental make-up session using the original (un-opened) Biba make-up from the early 70's. I had no idea what look I was going for when I started and just went with the flow. I have a huge selection of the original make-up so just put lots of shades on the make-up table and picked up various colours I felt would work as I went along.
I chose Claudia Devlin to apply this look to, not just because she's amazing but also because I feel she really fits the Biba aesthetic and her face really inspired me. Working with these products, developed using the technology of the late 60's, was an eye opener. No crease proof, long lasting formulations for a start. Also the very high pigment levels plus no silicones means a lot more blending!! Interesting enough once the make-up was finished all it took was one quick wipe over with make-up remover and everything was completely gone...this make-up was not designed to last!
I hope you enjoy watching this little bit of make-up history come to life!

I can’t guarantee that all of the make-up and skincare products I recommend will suit you. I only use products I personally think are good having tried them on myself and my clients but everyone's skin is different and it's possible to be allergic to anything. Wherever possible, test products out on yourself before purchasing.
I only feature products I like, or want to try. The products I use in these videos are either purchased by me or sent to me by make-up companies to use in my professional capacity as a make-up artist for fashion and celebrity photo shoots, red carpet etc. I am also sent products by many of the top magazines to judge for awards.
I do not accept payment and am not sponsored to make any of the films on this channel. Some of the links under the videos and blog posts on my site are affiliated however and as stated before, I only feature products I like, or want to try.
I was around in the 70's and wore a lot of her (Biba) make-up, in fact, I had several of these eye shadows, especially the lavender (we just said "purple" back then), and also her yummy blushes! and we weren't afraid to color our cheeks with them, either. We LOVED our blushes!!! 🤗
Miss the make-up we had back in the 70's. I still have a few items in the back of my drawers. A few perfumes, too. Could never bring myself to toss them out.
They don't make make-up today like they used to. Didn't realize back then that we had it so good. Thanks again for this great video trip down memory lane. 😘
It's was a great era. The 70s. My era. Good days. It's terrible now. Only went to the Biba store once weird new and wonderful.👍👍
I'm a makeup artist of twenty years and going strong, for celebrities and fashion, I just heave to tell you that you never cease to amaze, delight, inspire and enlighten me. I adore your talent, knowledge, skill, and generosity. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your sharing
+Jacqueline Kalab Thank so much Jacqueline X
Yes! She is pretty amazing!
I wished I had a palette of just those colors for modern shadows. This is so beautiful.
Get Natasha Denona to do a Biba 2......
I've tried to mix them though
Still have my Biba eye shadows in deep purple black and magenta shades, my Biba crayons, and lip sticks. All glorious shades of deep purple/blue hues and I do wear them. Haven't ruined my skin.
Worth money now
I think what makes this look so fashionable is that the eyebrows are left untouched. Were Lisa to shape them I think it would look like she was trying too hard, but this look is bold but also incredibly chic. I wish this was acceptable to wear in public XD
you should wear it anyway! we all have the option to try and break societal expectations :) I def plan on wearing something like this in public
You can totally pull it off I have it is very ok forget what people feel :)
If you like it, wear it and rock it! If it makes you happy, do it.
This is not even a make-up! This is art!!! Bravo Lisa, very very beautiful!!!
makeup is art when done in the spirit of creativity, not necessarily beauty :)
Привет!
@@user-mv4vt4lq1w привет :-)
I find that makeup without eye liner looks so beautiful, as if your skin is actually that colour in a way
I agree with you. In my case, I hardly use eye liner because somehow I feel that it ruins the eyeshadow colours that I am wearing
Either or. Both look nice, Liner gives a finished look, but maybe try hard. I sometimes skip mascara myself. But I'm no expert!
Claudia looks like a doll
She looks like Parker Posey
This isn't just makeup... this is pure art
Well m8 makeup is pure art.
I would love it if you could recreate the Biba look using modern makeup that is currently available :)
Mary Greenwell has in a video. Search "Mary Greenwell Biba"
+Shannon Mooney thank you!
Rachael I feel like this could be recreated with color pop cosmetics. I'm not familiar with them but they seem to have a nice color range with many finishes.
This was awesome. So many people only equate the '70s with the disco era. The early '70s were amazing. Thanks.
Ha, yeah that or hippies...
Indeed! actually the disco era was late70s-ea80s, the ea70s 'deco' style was totally diff. :) i like both.
Tina Colandrea started late 1974 and came on in full force in 1975.
Omg in my head 50 years ago were the 50s till I saw ur comment
The 70s for me was Holly Hobby.
How have I never discovered you before? You are phenomenal. Thanks for caring about make-up. An oft' overlooked part of history.
Thank you X
Lisa Eldridge
Until the earthquakes destroyed my city, and most of my personal collections of predominently are deco items, when out looking for items that interested me, I often looked out for *_™Mary Quant_* items. I come from a family that includes six sisters, and looked at my older sisters as style icons. I loved the _Quant_ logo at the age of seven and still think it is one of the most inspired and timeless of post World War II cosmetics. If you have the time and/or opportunity, I'd love to know if you have anything to say about the *™Mary Quant* brand.
Lisa Eldridge you are awesome... I wish you could put makeup on me. Please do more videos like this...
I still have some Mary Quant paint pots from the early 70s in an old travel bag, I believe. I know I still have one 70s powder blush in my makeup drawer. It is hard to get rid of things with sentimental value! Funny that I was buying and wearing Mary Quant in San Francisco then, but I don’t recall Biba cosmetics ever being available here. My most recent Mary Quant purchase was a beautiful baby pink powder blush that I wear at least a couple of times a week. I had just bought it from the website when she passed away. 😢 I loved her lingerie in the late 60s, too.
I still have my crayons from Biba in Kensington High Street. They are almost completely used, but I kept them so much I love them. I didn't realize they were vintage! I don't know how many years I used them! I never had a skin problem because of them, lucky me! :-) I am still using a Mary Quant palette from the same period that I love so much too!
I certainly miss this big department store, I loved going there...
Yael Bolender wish I’d kept mine, had a Mary quant palette and Biba make up fabulous colours and memories
To be vintage it all kept very well! The pigmentation looks better than many modern products. I'm also currently adding higgity piggity to my vocab, tysm.
I think it’s higgledy piggledy ;)
I remember having a "china doll" blouse like what the model is wearing when I was in high school. Wore it with jeans. Ahhh the 70's. Loved that era. Disco, long straight swinging hair, angel sleeves and Steely Dan. Gas was 25 cents a gallon and my friends and I used to sneak into clubs and drink grasshoppers and brandy alexanders. Those were the good ol days.
I was post-college then, living and working in San Francisco, and having a BALL! Gosh, I was out every night, dancing and listening to music, never got tired. The music was great; Steely Dan is still my favorite American group. I had fabulous clothes, shopped at a boutique that sold English and French ready-to-wear. Wonderful times, wish I could be transported back! Youth is everything.
The model is gorgeous, she really fits this makeup look. Lisa you are absolutely inspiring. I had never looked at makeup as something that could be considered art or anything more than to "beautify" basically. Just watching your videos have inspired me to create new looks for myself and to look at makeup as an art, a form of expression and femininity. I love how passionate you are about this. By far one of the best makeup experts out there.
she looks like the sky
That's so poetic :o
I have come back to this video several times and it is always refreshing to think about makeup so differently. I often think why are we still so strict to things which seem natural when makeup can be such a great outlet for expression, imagine if every person woke up in the morning and thought as freely about the things that they could put on their face as they are starting to about their clothing, it would be so interesting just looking around and seeing faces like this one, which though it may seem strange is undeniably beautiful. I think the Lisa Eldridge channel is a one-stop shop for a healthy open outlook on all that makeup has to offer. Thank you for that.
At first I really didn't like it; I thought it looked weird. But once she put on the lashes and the lipstick, it started to look absolutely amazing. This is a very beautiful look.
Same here I thought is was going to look awful but the end result amazing. I suck at putting make up on lol
Rachel Kramer Lol that's probably what people back then thought of Biba's makeup. That those colors just wouldn't work together, and then went it did, it's like bam, hits you in the face it's so good. Guess why it's Biba fever.
My favorite store in the 70s and visited High Street Kensington almost every day to window shop, shop or just have coffee
Claudia is gorgeous.
Raena Brendtro with the makeup......
Catherine's chanel and without
What a wonderfully unique makeup tutorial! Lisa, you are without a doubt, my favorite makeup artist on youtube. You are a true artist in every way, both talented and creative. Your technique is flawless! I also love the models you choose; they are always beautiful, yet distinctive. Finally, I adore your warm, friendly and calm demeanor. Thanks a million for these videos!!
Well said @Mallory Canter
Lisa is the consummate professional!!!
🇬🇧😻💯💋👠💅💄👏🙀🇬🇧
Reminds me of my teenage time. I loved that kind of make up and my parents hated it.
Barbara Hulanicki will be reunited with Biba, launched by The House of Frasre this year 2015 .I am very excited I hope they decide to do some of the cosmetics ..I remember getting into my mothers tins of crazy shimmer powders by BIBA..My mother was very young a when she had me ...many would say she was a wild girl...it was the 70's after all ...lol!I love love love all the videos you have done with Biba cosmetics
The model looks like she came from the past
vintage
she did she's from 2011
I am literally gushing over how stunning the model was at the end, of course she's also a natural beauty, but I felt that this look made her shine. I could easily see her with that look on the cover of a vogue magazine. Great job Lisa, looking forward to seeing more from you :)
Brilliant Lisa! I was too young to wear makeup at this time, but remember the look well. Longingly looking through fashion mags marketed to young mods and flower children, I would use my pencil crayons to draw faces, hair, dresses and boots to feel part of the scene. While all my friends were wearing their first nail polish in 'Prom Pink' I wore Yardley's 'Earth Apple Brown'. Please continue taking us on these delightful journeys.
I love the way you talk I can see the passion
Oh Lisa please do more biba like make-ups! they are so stunning, so different from what we see all around, I just can' stop watching these videos!
The quality is amazing! Can someone start making this type of makeup again?
this is the most beautiful makeup look i've ever seen.
Watercolor portrait feeling here~
That was incredibly evocative for me - exactly how I made up my face in the early 70’s with the amazing Biba makeup - very trance-y , very hippieish , at 60, I still love makeup and I thought this was one of the best makeup videos I’ve ever seen - thank you for the memories . I do remember having the most extraordinary electric green metallic cream eyeshadow that took me ages to blend out with a brush, it came in a black glass pot - of all the makeup I’ve thrown away , this is the item I regret losing .
no lie, she kinda looks like Emily from the Corpse bride
I'm a Doe 😂😂😂
i know this video was from a few years ago and you also did a "contemporary" biba look, but it'd be great if you could revisit biba using modern makeup since you used (gorgeous) vintage makeup in both videos.
Looking at this makeup blows my mind! Not just the fact that you portrayed the Biba effect so well but just how astonishing the colors are. If only they kept it up and didn't go out of the business 20 years before I was born.!
When I was 14 my grandmother's sister gave me a silvered pale blue eyeshadow from the 70s and stupidly I simply used it and allowed my mother to discard the packaging. It wasn't Biba, I'm not sure the brand, it seemed to be a refill for a palate, as it was in a tiny cardboard rectangle press, cased in a clear plastic tab. I wish I still had it now!
😞😟
So well done!! I knew it was Biba before I even watched the video! The model is perfect, my name is Claudia as well. I used to love this makeup when I was like ten to twelve, thirteen years of age. I’m 59 now. And yes, they were SO ahead of their time. It’s sad to think that I actually used this makeup in London, the David Bowie, Twiggy era, and now it’s half a century old 😢💄💋
Absolutely beautiful! Circa 1920's: I can see her in a Speak Easy in a Gold tasseled mini Claudia is breathtaking!!!!!! I love the look. They need to bring this back!
Waow, the Ingrid Boulting look, and also Maudie James had that look too. Both were famous models of that time.
Good job.
i wish i could go out w/such makeup. it's adorable
I absolutely adore this video. The passion in your voice when you talk about biba, the model, coming from the past to kill this look, the beautiful colors and of course, your art. Amazing.
yes my mother has pictures of herself in similar styles she also used to just paint one half of her face awesome video thanks for the education and a journey in time .
As a College Professor in a School of Fashion in Canada, I shared this video with my Fashion students recently for a discussion on the Biba fashions, Biba store, and make-up look. The students loved your make-up demonstration on Claudia. Thank you Lisa for helping to bring the Biba lifestyle look to a new generation of young Fashion designers to appreciate. This will inspire them.
after 7 years, the makeup still looks stunning. - 2019
I always go back to your Biba videos! Been watching them over and over the past couple of years. I'm still obsessed with the pigments and formulas here, Lisa!!
You've inspired me to start collecting Vintage Makeup :)
your knowledge and the way you light up when you talk about the things you know plus your obvious genius talent really really really inspire me
This reminds me of Bowie ;-;
Same era
To be quite honest, I don't know how many times I have watched this tutorial. Just how you explain every makeup and showing how pigmented they are, and everything about this is just memorizing and honestly, a video that I will never stop watching.
looks like nars was very inspired by biba! love this
Words can not describe how in love I am with those colors, I am so depressed we have nothing that amazing now a days.
Wow... the 70's definitely weren't afraid of color. At first I was like... oh GAWD, that's too much! But the finished product was lovely, albeit heavy. But that was the look back then.
Hearing you talk about makeup is amazing. I can tell you are not only passionate about makeup but passionate about its history and its chemistry. You are amazing!
The model is so beautiful omg
love this! my mum used to shop at BIBA in the 70s,she said the shop in kensington was out of this world, with hat stands everywhere hanging scarfs etc! thanks lisa, your vids are fantastic :)
Oooh she looks like a futuristic flapper girl.
Lisa, you are a true artist. I love your work. I can imagine how you felt using the original make up. When I was a kid I used to play with my aunt and granmom make up.
I have been a makeup artist for over 30 years. I fell in Love with Yardley makeup when I was a child in the 70's./ Since you are a vintage collector, I am wondering Do you know where i can get Yardley's Pot O Gloss Lip gloss? I have been just dying to get some.Thank you in advance, Your videos are amazing Thank you
+Elsie Trainor I have always ever wanted the pot o gloss. I have never seen it any where,..makes me so sad.
I KNEW THIS LOOK WAS GOING TO COME BACK! I absolutely loved the Biba Look and so grateful to Lisa for making this amazing video. I feel like the Biba girl looks has back in the form of e-girls who have a similar aesthetic!
This is stunning, looks very tim burton-esque
Hats off. This girl has unbelievable talent, intellect and grace.
I wanna wear this kind of look in public since I have hooded eyes but I'm too shy XD
This is definitely the most stunningly gorgeous and exciting make up demonstration I've ever seen....I cannot believe those amazing products....what a revelation..
Love this make up! reminds me a lot of those "Blythe dolls" ♥
I graduated high school in 1972 and was totally obsessed with the advertisements I saw for the Biba makeup line. I sadly never saw any in person - wish I had at least kept some of the magazine ads! Thanks for this beautiful video - it brings back memories!
WHERE'S HER BERET?! Ha how cute would that be to top off this look? Amazing artistry!
Or u can use the bones of the old compacts take out powder n lipstick an put in your powder n lipstick ,make up . i love old compacts an mirrors . My daughter found a huge gold compact mirror by company called Wentworth or woodsworth cant remember an i think its brass though so cool looking!
She makes me think of Sally from The nightmare before Christmas with this look.
The muted shades are so unusual even by today’s market standards. Mary quant the same. Never found a shadow like the jade colour since and remember a liquid midnight blue (possibly of Mary’s) I’ve never tried a consistency like since. Almost sooty.
My favourite make up video on CZcams, thank you Lisa for breaking into your treasure chest for us.
Can I be real? 'Instagram' makeup only looks good on specific eye and face shapes and it feels lile if you can't look instagram perfect your makeup isn't good or worth it... What happened to originality and fun with makeup? :(
I love this palette. She looks like a watercolor portrait. Thank you for this!
How do you say "too much makeup" it's a makeup look that is from a specific tome period, obviously unless you like that full on 70s look you're not going to wear it, so relax.
Hi. I am a Makeup Artist of over 45 years. I started out as an MUA working for both Biba and Mary Quant. I was about 17 or 18 years old living in San Francisco.Biba was an extrordinary line. The first to do a black lipstick. Well, Mary Quant had one as well. Not sure who did it first, but I remember wearing it. I was happy to watch your video! Well done!
OMFG That was so god damn amazing
This model is one of the best I've ever seen, she is so stunning!
I'm in love with the Anna Sui 2014 fall runway look. It's very 20s and a bit biba. It would be great if you would do a tutorial on it.
PS. These looks are amazing. Thank you for introducing us to the Biba look. Have you ever considered trying to reproduce the makeup?
I love the fact that your videos aren't just showing how to do the makeup, you tell the history as well! Very interesting
The model is so pretty ! Can I have her face !
I used Biba makeup. Never did me any harm lol. I find it very hard to find an authentic 70s look! With the shiny white near the brows. I love this look you've done very nostalgic. X
Not to be confused with Bieber fever
:P
I am not a regular watcher of makeup tutorials or makeup videos in general, but I absolutely love your channel. The looks you do are stunning, and I feel like I learn so much with every video. Thanks for some amazing work!
After watching this I ordered some unused vintage makeup from the 40s and smeared it all over my face and then fed the container to my dog.
THIS IS AMAZING. Wow. You can really tell that the textures and pigments are unlike what we have on the market today in the way that they lay and layer on the skin.
Thank you, Lisa Eldridge also, for the wonderful history lesson. This video was impeccable.
I remember the 70's, but never remember eye shadow on the top of the cheekbone being the style.
in fairness she used a blush on the eyes and brought it down... and she did mention it was pretty out there
This never gets old! The model is phenomenal
I'm moaning honestly this was so beautiful.
This video was fabulous for me this era all I think of is black and white, it was truly full of vibrant, beautiful colors thank you for sharing this with us.
Damn you're quite a beaut
This is absolutely gorgeous.. I can't believe the colours were so pigmented and vibrant back then.. Just wow.
looks like a human doll
Does anybody else think Lisa looks like Lana Del Rey?
You talk about makeup with such a strong passion and love. I admire you Lisa. Next month I'm finishing my make up artistry and I hope one day to be half as amazing as you xx
Oh WOW! Love love love this makeup look! That model was stunning, and she looked fantastic in that makeup.
I watch your videos and read your book and you are so amazingly talented. So I'm sitting there with my jaw dropped at the unique gorgeous look you just did on the model...mind blowing especially since you said you weren't even sure what look you were going for. You are a TRUE ARTIST!!!🌼🌸🌺🌼
I rememember buying my first black eyeshadow at the Biba counter. Scandalous! Madeline Mono/Stagelight was popular as well, but I think that was a few years after.
I have to said thank you because you give me a new sense of love for the history of de make up and for the woman in general. I’m addict to your videos, they are great. Cheers from Argentina
I absolutely love when you do these sort of videos. I am a historian and a makeup artist and you capture both of my loves.
The more of your work I see the more I love you!!! You really are an exceptional artist. This look proves it. Incredible.
I love watching good make up tutorials. They are relaxing as well as helpful.
