I usually use 808 or 909 samples for kicks and modulate their pitch or osc. edit But you can make a kick out of a synth as well, it's just a little bit more tweaking.
It is complex. Problem is that there are no presets so you have to make everything from scratch. Synth on e2 are substractive : take a waveform you like, make a Melody or rythm. Apply a filter (don't forget about HP or BP, press the buttons several times to change the filter type) / (don't forget about filter envelope) Play with osc. Edit, don't forget about modulation, apply one if necessary. Last but not least, effects. Play with them. LEARN THEM ALL. Understand what they do. DON'T FORGET ABOUT MFX. Muchas posibilatates. You won't be making the sickest synth with the e2 but if you learn about synthesizers in general i guess you'll become better at making original synths.
There are serveral tutorial videos on youtube. I've been using it nearly everyday for 3 years now, that's how I learned. Just try to make music and you'll get better at it. Otherwise the manual is very detailed if you want to understand how the E2 works.
"Sidechain" I call it that way because I sometime use it as an offbeat bass to make some Hardtek beats. With the IFX "pumper" or a LFO "Saw Up - Level" you can make it sounds like it has a sort of compressor sidechained with a the kick on it.
