The amazing thing is - the majority of the Beatles’ great songs are album tracks and not singles. It’s mind-blowing.

The BEATLES, once they did something, they moved on to something different . They never wanted to get pigeon holed into one sound or style of music. That's why they were so good and their music will be around forever.

There is one vital contribution that deserves a lot of credit for the versatile sound of the Beatles...the influence of their producer, George Martin. He was almost old enough to be their dad, and he preferred classical music to rock/pop, but he recognized the band's potential and encouraged it to blossom. He also urged Lennon and McCartney to step beyond their comfort zone as composers and embrace music they hadn't been exposed to. A lot of people have attempted to claim credit as the "fifth Beatle"; if there is such a person, it was George Martin.
@@tracyyork1428George Martin was not really old enough to be their father. When John and Ringo were born in 1940, George Martin was only 14. He was 16 when Paul was born in 1942 and 17 when George was born in 1943. But YES, as far as those of us who are long time, avid Beatles', GEORGE MARTIN is the ONLY one who deserves the title as the "FIFTH BEATLE"
The Beatles mastered the sub 3-minute pop song. The could have gone on churning them out, like this one, but they weren't satisfied. And so we were blessed with Sgt. Pepper.

Paul actually wrote this at 15 years old in 1957. They needed a song for this album
"Beatles For Sale" in 1964 so he dug this one up. Listen to John's "I'm Loser" from this one, a very Bob Dylan influenced song.

One of the most beautiful melody ever dedicated to Buddy Holly!...George Martin considered this song the best of the entire LP and one of the better Beatles tune.
george martin was a man of his time for me this in one of worst song ever.

@@tomhirons7475 Well, everyone to their own taste. 🙂 I think it's absolutely beautiful and possibly one of my favourite Beatles songs.
Incidentally, Donovan wrote a song on a similar theme, called "I'm Gonna Try For The Sun".
Both he and Paul (who wrote (IFTS) were born and raised in the cold, grey and sometimes economically depressed North of Great Britain, so I think following the Sun for them must have vividly represented the idea of escaping their background not just for better weather in the South but leaving behind family/social expectations for something brighter with more exciting opportunities.
Both have a sweet, simple folk style and memorable melodies that evoke happy/ hopeful and sad/ wistful emotions. As in the US, there was a big folk revival movement in Britain in the late 50's/early 60s, which may have been an influence on Paul here as well as being Donovan's 'thing'..

The emergence of Paul McCartney as a lead guitarists seeds were sewn during the recording of I'll Follow The Sun., When it came time to record the 4 bar guitar solo, George Harrison had difficulty finding the right solo to play. An exasperated John Lennon said he could easily play the solo since he plays the intro and outro riff. A miffed George Harrison retorted "'I am supposed to be the lead guitarist in the band, after all'.'. Paul McCartney took notice of this exchange and when it came time to record their next single 'Ticket To Ride', he took over the lead guitarist role for that song. As he would continue to do on several Beatle songs the remainder of the Beatles recording career,. Drive My Car, Taxman, Good Morning Good Morning and Another Girl to name just a few.. Producer George Martin says this is his favorite song off the Beatles For Sale album. RNB
Why bring that up? You feel a need to knife George? George wasn't at the GMGM session. Don't think Drive My Car is proven - lousy song anyway. George had to put up with a lot of shit from Paul being over pedantic. As Ringo said, ''there was nothing wrong with George's solos''. George still played heaps of killer solos and lead guitar, and bass on several tracks too. You don't mention that. At times reportedly he would take a long time over the solo, but hell that's not easy especially if the songwriter like Paul has already had time to dwell on it. Yes I read the Emerick book too. George also brought Indian music to the group, and played sitar certainly on Norwegian Wood and Love You To according to Lewisohn while still playing great lead guitar such as on 'Fixing A Hole'. Yeah Paul felt he had a right to play some lead guitar as well feeling he'd been lumbered with the bass, so there was some conflict with George as a result. I like your comments normally R&B but not this time.
@@gettinhungrig8806 Hi g h. It wasn't meant as a slight on George. Just a historical fact that I'll Follow The Sun was a watershed moment in the evolution of Paul as a guitarist. This same session saw George's solos either wiped and replaced (Mr. Moonlight) or factored heavily in a song not making the album.(Leave My Kitten Alone) Imagine Beatles For Sale with "Kitten' being the closing track and Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby closing Side 1 instead of Mr. Moonlight. A song most fans could've done without. So John and Paul understandably (in their minds) felt George was no longer the bands only lead guitarist. (John had only played 2 solos up to this point-Long Tall Sally and You Can't Do That). Georges solos in Savoy Truffle, Old Brown Shoe and Something are 3 of the best solos on any Beatles songs. @@ricknbacker5626 The NICE thing about John, Paul and George was that EACH of them could handle, lead, bass and rhythm guitar, so they COULD switch around with no problem. No need for people to get a little upset about who played what and why. They were ALL gifted on the guitar/bass

All the hours of gigging in Hamburg and Liverpool gave them the grounding they needed. Incidentally both Hamburg and Liverpool were major port cities with lots of musical influences passing through.

They wanted to be song writers and to write for other people . They wrote songs for other singers and musicians. take a look at covers of their music and songs written for others you will be surprised.

This song is an example of why ppl fell in love with them so hard...nobody was really doing stuff like this, modern type folk songs with artsy, monotone, harmonies, & guitar acoustic solos....they didnt just say “screw genres” & did as they pleased, but, they invented a few+ genres of their own....& by doing so, they took creative risks, & every time they were met with success, so they took more risks..., ppl were just ga ga over them, they were so unique back then....mick jagger a while back tried to put it into words using modern examples of just how huge they were, but it was difficult for him to do....he said they were kind of big in the way michael jackson was, but bigger, that “there was no competing with them....all u could do was try & keep up”

You should really listen to entire albums, because the albums are works of art, the songs are pieces of a larger, artistic puzzle and each album advances musically, lyrically....I have favorite songs, but when you love the Beatles, you have favorite entire albums.

Jayy, you are right on. They kept trying to do new things. In '63, they were trying -- and succeeding -- in findng their own sound. In '64, they had established their sound before the whole world! In '65, they wanted to leave the "Beatlemania"/Mop-tops thing behind them and try to deepen their song-writing skills. They also got into marijuana and other psychedelics (certainly by '66), so that opened new levels and areas of exploration for them, as you can tell when you listen to music from Revolver, Sgt. Peppers and Magical Mystery Tour. They were always getting anxious to move forward and onward from where they had been -- they didn't want to stagnate as musicians and song-writers/performers, you know?

Revolution No. 9 is not REALLY a song, so you can't really say it is a "Bad" song. IT's a "sound collage."
