I think these tutorials are wonderful! Thank you. By the way, for people who think there's 'too much talking,' I usually watch these tutorials at x1.5 speed. Goes by quicker and the narration holds up well.
What browser do you use that allows for that? My Firefox and Safari don't have that option ,that I can find. - Found it! you have to enable html5 player. Thanks.
i like this technique. I am thinking of reconfiguring some of the rooms in my house. after watching this presentation I scanned a floorplan of my house as a jpeg and imported it into sketchup. from there I built a simple 3d model of our upper floor so that we could imagine how the new layout will look. brilliant technique and simple enough even for me to use!
Been watcNice tutorialng your vids for a good few weeks now, learning new sNice tutorialt each day. my worksoftow has improved so much since watcNice tutorialng
An easier way to make the walls is to offset each room by either 2" or 3" (depending on the wall thickness) and then remove the center line between the walls.
@ozziekoala So glad you're enjoying the videos! I am using Version 8. Try checking that you're not inside any groups. If you're inside a group, you'll only resize that one!
To get rid of the double thick walls, erase the center lines, then select the outer lines and use the scale tool to shrink them by 50% around the center point. Alternately, offset all the walls by 3" so the double thick walls end up being 6" and then offset the outer walls by 3" outwards (first making sure the dimensions of the outer walls are 3" smaller than they need to be when you draw the initial rectangle).
Yo Cameron. You can say to your sponsor that your deal is still working. It's 2013 and when you stopped the video to talk about the 3Dconnexion, I went to their website and bought one! Thank you for your videos.
In lay outing of walls, the dimension has to be center to center of walls, so we cannot just simply delete the double walling and select 1 side of wall we choose to remain, otherwise our dimension will not be c-to-c,and we will have a prob when we come to the erection of multi walls later.Instead the single line between two walls will be used as a basis of offsetting half thickness both sides to erect a wall for the 2 partition by using a move tool.
Very nice tutorial.... Learnt a lot from you actually !!! Thank you for all the great videos.... Was just wondering if you could resize the entire model a second time (using the tape measure) so that the side that is 14 feet now at 27:50 to become 15 feet and 6 inches (to account for the 3 walls)...I think that would have restored the room dimensions to what you originally had in mind.... Please correct me if I am wrong !
Instead of using the line tool, why not draw the whole 12x14 rectangle first, then make the subdivisions within that? You don't have to hand trace that way. Much faster.
Why do you try to match the rectangle you drag with the floorplan and then enter the correct dimensions? You should be able to drag a 1' by 1' (or something random) and then enter the 9' by 5'.. correct?
I’ve cracked soft soft before twice as a kid. Never learned anytNice tutorialng to make anytNice tutorialng useful. Sad tNice tutorialng is a lot of my peers back then
Great Video! Are you using a special mouse to hover, orbit etc? I can't seem to manipulate my view as fluidly as you do no matter what combination of keys and mouse clicks I try... what is your secret??? :) Thanks
if you make the walls 6' thick isn't that going to eat from the original room size ? how do you compensate for the wall thickness and not effect the size of the room
In standard construction,. only exterior walls are 6" thick and that is typically only done in colder climates where increased insulation is necessary. Here in Texas, 6" exterior walls would be an upgrade. Interior walls are only 4" thick. Bottom line, plan your structure for the interior spaces you need or want and add the thickness of the walls to accommodate that. It all depends on what you are planning to build. If, for example, you need a brick veneer, your foundation would need to be even larger so it would have a brick ledge on which to start laying the veneer. Start with the largest footprint and move in.
Question: I don't have a scanner. But could I make a floor plan in, say, Excel, and then take a picture of that with the Windows snipping tool and save it as a jpeg? Then bring that jpeg into Sketchup?
When I use the tape measure and type in a specific dimension, I never get the comment box asking if I want to resize the whole model. Is there another way to get the whole image to scale?
You probably already found something by now, but for others: There are hundreds of floorplans available on ArchDaily... almost every project showcase includes one.
+carl landster I would just draw the model's overall area, extend the flat surface to 6 inches thick, and finally select the entire slab and make it a Group. Then I'd place it directly beneath the model shown here.
In practice ... Skip the paper version and scanning. If I need to scale the paper version ... Too much work. Most disappointing: walls. My rooms are a fixed size. Not minus a wall thikness. Drawing instrictions - good. Practical use - not so.
OMG. Everything is the first thing. I'm sorry, I'm sure it's a great tutorial but it's like attending a meeting without an agenda. It could have been a 5 minute video.
+Chip Sills Nobody should import paper plans. Just use the measurements from the paper. Paper lines are often askew and also you can only guess where walls end because the lines are to thick. I draw/design 30,000 sqr/ft gardencenters and that would not end well by importing paper plans...

Like 2 minutes in and you've solved the issues I was having. I didn't realize that box for showing what was going on was there, I didn't
I found this program being the most logical program I've ever used.
This is how a video should be produced! Thank you and Good job!!!!
definitely diving into your videos. Thank you so much for taking the ti to teach us that are green in the field. Have a great day
Thank you. Because of these tutorials I designed my friends house.

I have watched many videos and I think yours are the best.

it would have been perfect if you went direct to the point, you talk too much.
You should appreciate these tutorials. He explains everything very well.
Huge thanks! Could not figure this out. I need it to prop scale a land plat. Keep up the good work... you're a big hlep!
Thanks bud! great video and instructions.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together!
I'd rather have too much talking than not enough!
Agree. For those of us who are using Sketchup for the first time, the narrative definitely helps
they were to picky picky ... I felt you did great job and actually share visually reference boxes thanks
The wall with the biggest length would be the best reference ;)
This is indeed a great video , It solved a lot of problems . Thanks for the post .

best tutor ever

Any type of image format supported by SketchUp can be imported
@southboy153 Thanks! It's a lot of fun.
When I use the tape measure and type in a specific dimension, I never get the comment box asking if I want to resize the whole model. Is there another way to get the whole image to scale?
I'm using a Mac.
I don't get the comment box either
If you hold the option key on your Mac it will work and there will be no guide lines
Sorry you just need to press the option key to toggle between guide lines on/off
ok thank you
you know, it would be really nice if you put the image in the description, just something for us to practice with. :)
You probably already found something by now, but for others: There are hundreds of floorplans available on ArchDaily... almost every project showcase includes one.
Can you make rounded walls on here? I want to recreate some of the architecture in Star Wars and other sci-fi movies
Nice work. TreblD is good for floor plans too :)
Can you post a link to the video you mention on how to scale the one object instead of everything in the file
Does this work with paint images? What I mean by that is, does it work with an image that I created in Windows Paint.
Except that it's 1000x more complicated that what it seems
Get to the point!!
sa ...I don't even have a available device where i can download it
i noticed you did not make the slab on this method. How would you come back later and make a slab.
+carl landster I would just draw the model's overall area, extend the flat surface to 6 inches thick, and finally select the entire slab and make it a Group. Then I'd place it directly beneath the model shown here.
Great site :-).
Is the 3dconnexion super navigator available in the philippines?
Ok, nevermind.. I just saw your promotion for the 3d mouse LOL
Patience... patience... patience...

Well done tutorial but WAY too verbose and long!
hey does anyone know what template this is? thanks ;)

Make big room sir
Thanks, I thought your presentation was well done.
Doesn't use paper plan:
1: Draws 3 rectangles
2: Done
3: No thanks
Lol
+DaHeMpEr t was not necessary for him t import a paper plan, but he showed a beginner how it was done...

+DaHeMpEr Thanks for taking the time to answer. I am a newbie and bow to your experience.
Fakhri Habibi hamoud
I'm too stoned for tNice tutorials, I'll be back later...
It's not exactly the measurement? Wh are you? What is this? Waste of time
He is using the buttock tool which he advertises.
Really talk too much!
