Peter Hickman's commentary gives us a great insight into a lap of the TT Circuit. What goes through a riders head during the lap? Even some tips on how they achieve such massive speed.
We've cherry-picked some of our favourite quotes from the man himself.
(0:20)"Bottom of Bray Hill, absolutely flat out in top gear, bit of a wheelie up over Ago's Leap, another one just there"
(1:02)"probably only cost me a second or so on the run up to union mills!" - could he break 16m:40s in IOM TT 2019? We fully expect he can, but will he be the only one?
    (1:45)"Awesome corner that - Ballascarey"
(2:07)"Over to the right for the Crosby jump - 175-180 mile an hour over the top of that jump"
(2:34)"Change of direction over the top here, you got to be really careful, the bike wants to shake its head a little bit, there it is."
(2:46)"got to watch your shoulder on the wall just there, and also a change of camber on the exit"
(2:52)"One of the best corners on the circuit for me, Gorse Lea. I send all my friends, people who wanna watch, get scared - that's where you wanna stand on the left just there Gorse Lea 7 miles in. Double right hander it's really fast 165-170 mile an hour through there"
(4:46)"end of Cronk-y-voddy we're gonna be off the gas and back on again - no brakes... Ready...off the gas...back on again. Absolutely pinned in top gear (laughs) bikes shakes its head a lot through there."
(6:01)"Bit of a spin on the exit there, she's getting a bit lively."
(7:32)"Listen to that motor screaming its head off. Up to 5th gear now, no brakes, this is Ballacrye, it's one of the fastest corners. Massive jump over there."
    (07:40) Jump (7:48)"You're jumping about 40 - 50 meters it's absolutely insane corner. It's Awesome!"
(8:23)"Listen to that motor, absolutely singing it's nuts off. It sounds absolutely brilliant."
(8:55)"flick left, stand the bike up, quick jump, get over there and now you can be pinned all the way to iron gates."
11:31 "this is the start of the mountain"
(13:56)"I was trying my absolute utmost to make this lap perfect, so far it was pretty good."
(14:14) "Windy corner's coming up next. Windy because...It's windy"
(14:19) "Bit of a spin on the white line just there. The white line was just a little bit dusty. Didn't cost me too much time luckily"
(17:03)"I still don't actually know I've won here by the way. So I'm asking the crowd. (Laughs) Then I do a burnout"
    What a rider. Top Bloke.

"The bike wants to wheelie and wiggle a bit" Any sane human would shit their pants after setting down a wheelie into a speed wobble at 120+...this dude talks about it like a light breeze on a summer afternoon.

    • @sfprivateer
      @sfprivateer Před 3 lety +16

Well actually a wheelie eliminates a speed wobble ... and if the speed wobble occurs after the wheelie, it's not any kind of problem if you have road left where to keep the throttle on. Not only that, but the race bikes have stoppers to prevent too much steering input and I'm guessing their steering shocks are set to pretty stiff.... so it's way less of an issue than non-racer would believe. I often visit 2 circuits here where you get speed wobbles pretty much every lap out of hilltop corner exits... and it's not a big deal, just keep it pinned.

Once you advance past a certain level you lose your fear of it. He's not scared of it because he trusts the bike will find grip. He's probably more relaxed at speed than most people are lounging around on their couch on a lazy Sunday morning. Just look at how confident he is on exit when it's wobbling and he's only got inches before he's into the dirt and a stone wall. You can tell he's put hours into the course alone and many more riding other courses.
A good rider/driver and a good car/bike can do things together that they can't do separately. They bring the best out of each other. That's the appeal of it. He's not crazy. In fact, to him it probably looks like it's all happening in slow motion.

What gets me the most is that riders may not have a speedometer during racing. As you practice and increase speeds at particular corners, you have to rely on feel and RPM of the engine in reference to the gear its in!

You can make all the settings like simulation riding. I Could be wrong but I think the real life actual lap record here is faster than the fastest lap in the game by professional gamers in 3rd person view which makes it way easier. Even playing Ride 2 I’m only 10 seconds faster than the real record on a bike at nubergring nordschlief and that guy who has the record in real life did it with traffic like cars on track the same time. The TT game is extremely accurate though. John McGuiness actually watches and commentates someone playing the game and isn’t even close to Johns lap times like the guy is still 3 min slower than John on the game. That really puts this real riding into perspective at the skill. Plus you can’t just restart when you crash either lol. Amazing mind blowing skill of all the riders

It's absolutely awesome. So much that people will never understand about the TT or the riders. It's a thrill that's surpassed living. Seriously. And let's just stop and think about the talent of Peter Hickman. It was back marker city, in no realistic world should he have broken the 135 in that traffic. And also credit to Dean Harrison and all the other riders.. but the following year, we had no idea what to expect as you can never judge one TT from the next. However the 2019 Senior was absolutely insane! The 135 wasn't beaten or matched but.. Hicky displayed a 200% improvement. He shot out the gate like a bat out of hell and by lap 4 had a big enough lead that his bike had malfunction out the pits starting lap 5. He ran 2 laps not being able to really ride the bike on full power and still came second. This race in 2018 he won by 2 seconds! And only just won on the last sector on the last lap! Let's be honest, Peter Hickman is not only the king of the road, he's also the champion of improvement. And the thing is.. he's that chilled out he's probably never noticed. People would give up everything to be that composed. Just wait until the TT is back on.. he'll beat his 135 lap.

Excellent narrating. I guess you'd have to know every detail, it's what kept you alive... Just made it look so easy... It was so fast it looked like a sped up video, and I know it wasn't. Watching the people go by at those speeds was amazing. The bug on his shield didn't get in the way either. Good thing he didn't try to wipe it off, could have made such a mess, then you wouldn't be able to see at all. It would be cool to put on virtual reality goggles and experience something like that.
