    I feel this song. When I was young I was indoctrinated into religion like most people. The older I got, the more questions I had, that weren't answered adequately by any minister, preacher, priest, emir...The more I read about history the less I believed in god, any god. Although I am an Atheist I still love to study religion....it's an interesting way people used to explain the world around them that they didn't understand.

    • @ricmartinez2590
      @ricmartinez2590 Před 4 lety +9

      Sherri, we are like kindred spirits (no pun intended). As a child I went on a religious exploration but the more I looked into the bible the more contradictions I found. Not to mention all the hypocrisy I noticed among religious people or terrible things done in the name of religion. I keep toggling between atheism and theism. I to find different religions interesting for the same reasons you stated. I used to enjoy religious debates but not that much anymore. It saddens me that most people are simple- minded and can't fathom a different idea outside of the realm of thinking they were taught (brainwashed) to believe from an early age. I'm tired of hearing "I'll pray for you" or "You just have to have faith" when I've stumped them with questions they can't answer. Anyway...
      XTC is one of my favorite bands. And lyrically "Dear God" is beautiful. Andy Partridge is really asking the audience to open their eyes and really think.

This song is brilliant, but I don't believe there are any mixed messages in it. This song means a lot to me. We all, at least most of us, question the faith we've been taught. For some of us, the questioning leads to unacceptable answers from religion, and our faith is lost. I found this song when I was questioning, and it brought up many of the same issues I had problems with. Even though I've since become an atheist and no longer struggle with religious brainwashing, this song is still special for the support it gave me at the time, letting me know that it was good to question, even if, in the end, the answers were uncomfortable.

    I'm in my 50's. I could never buy into religion even though I was raised in it and back in the 60's it wasn't really something you heard people openly question or criticize. It made me think there was something wrong with me. While I never hid my lack of belief, I never met another self-admitted atheist until I was in college. When this song came out my reaction was "Finally! Someone saying out loud what I've been thinking for so long. It's not just me." I'm sure it was the same for a great many people. I still consider it one of the most important pop songs ever written. XTC is, in my opinion, one of the greatest and most underappreciated bands of our time. Their discography is full of brilliant songs with amazing hooks and incredibly clever and thought provoking lyrics.

  • @lordeggo
    @lordeggo Před 3 lety +33

    The message is pretty clear and it's delivered in a very interesting way instead of just slamming hate.
    The child starts out innocently questioning basic things and being a little cheeky "reduction in the price of beer". Then it goes to adult and he's questioning more serious things "a lot of quotes from this book us crazy humans wrote". The entire song goes from somber to intense as questions to conditions of the world make less sense ending with the pounding of anger or desperation (not hate). There's even the subtle use and progression of the phrases can't believe in, won't believe in, don't believe in. It's a controversial song but it's a very good one.

    It's written to the Bible character called 'God', and it has two meanings (I think). "If there's just one thing I don't believe in, it's YOU. Dear God."
    There's the atheist saying, "You're a made-up character in a book!" and then there's the one who believed in God saying, "I don't trust you anymore, God. I don't trust anything you say. We're done."

    Great song from my favorite band of the '80s. The writer Andy Partridge is brilliant, most of their songs are not this confrontational but the song does make the listener think. It doesn't take much effort to see all the crimes committed in the name of religion and the injustice going on all the time. There's no reason anyone in this country should go hungry or lack a place to live or healthcare.
    XTC released a lot of incredible albums, "Skylarking" is probably their most accessible (this song was not on it originally, it was added upon re-release) although my favorite is "Mummer" which is a little darker.

    The first time I heard this song it was brand new and I was still in college so I thought of it in light of Voltaire's "Candide" (1759) -- a book you might think of as "The Princess Bride" of the 18th century. Why do bad things happen to good people is a question of the ages. Anyway, for a palete cleanser to that check out the power pop stylings in "Vanishing Girl" by XTC's alter-ego group The Dukes of Stratosphear. The 2001 digital remaster sounds great.

It's another vignette of unrest in the UK in the late 70s-80s and how the journey to success is often easier for those who have the 'right' cultural attributes. The heavy issues surrounding it are an interesting contrast to the light-hearted tone of the music.
