"Monsters are tragic beings. They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice. That is their tragedy. They do not attack people because they want to, but because of their size and strength, mankind has no other choice but to defend himself. After several stories such as this, people end up having a kind of affection for the monsters. They end up caring about them." -Ishiro Honda
This scene hurts me more since we've lost another Godzilla legend today, Kenpachiro Satsuma... May he rest in peace with Haruo Nakajima and Akira Ifukube. No matter how cheesy the Heisei series was, that series will always be a special place in my heart. Especially, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah...
What hurts me especially about Godzilla's death is knowing that he died in grief. After the destruction of Birth Island, despite his horrid mutation caused by it, basically running a nuclear fever, all he could think about was finding his son. He spent almost the entire movie searching for him, hoping he's alright, despite not even being related by blood. And as soon as he found him, they were torn apart again by Destoroyah, who killed the only thing Godzilla truly cared about before his very eyes. He ultimately let his anger out on Destoroyah, but the damage was already done. Finally, as Godzilla dies, he uses his dying breath to let out one last roar, but not fierce, proud, intimidating or strong as the King Of The Monsters did so many times, but tired, weak and sad. As his live fades, he felt as though he had failed, never knowing that he actually won. His energy revives his son, and the will of the king is carried on into the next millenium. _You have lived a battle, now rest in peace, Heisei Godzilla, in my opinion to this very day the most iconic incarnation of them all._
Godzilla's death was indeed very painful to watch as a kid. But then, to see Godzilla Jr fully resurrected as a full grown adult, I literally thought Godzilla Jr will carry on his father's legacy
Saddest moment in godzilla history, the first time I watched this I was in shock. It’s hard to believe the one Godzilla we love and made this franchise come to life, suddenly dies because of his own ability’s. Thats when I saw Godzilla junior evolve, I knew this franchise wouldn’t come to an end. when I saw this in g fest, the audience also cried as if it was their first time watching the film. This will remain an unforgettable moment in godzilla history.
I can understand why the Audence was crying I can related to the Audeance I felt the same way when I lost my grandpa long live Heisei godzilla 1984-1995
The most solemn thing about this scene is for the entirety of the Heisei series, humanity was actively trying to find any way possible to finally defeat and kill Godzilla. Yet, when he finally dies: Nobody cheers. Nobody celebrates. Nobody starts clapping. Nobody says a word. They simply stand there in silence feeling pity and sorrow for this creature that, for all intents and purposes, was nothing more than a victim of Mankind’s hubris.
Something a lot of people dont catch is at 2:16 the flesh from his upper face and throat fall out from the eye sockets through his bottom jaw. Its what actually cuts off his roar, his vocal cords melt off right after his chest rips open and his heart explodes. Which is what the orange stuff is. Kawakita really wanted his death to be gruesome. What really sets the tone is unlike the 54 Godzilla who struggles as its dying this Godzilla just stands there. This is done on purpose as the idea was to sell to the audience losing Jr was more painful than the pain Godzilla is actually going through in his final moments. Going so far as to make Godzilla sound like he's sobbing as he's dying mourning he couldnt save his son.
This beautiful ending shows how well executed the Heisei series was. It built up its characters so perfectly and made this ending so much more impactful. I still cry when I watch this. It’s such a powerful send off to the greatest series of Godzilla films imo.
I saw this movie when I was a kid and it still makes me cry so hard as an adult. I literally can't watch this ending without crying. It just goes to show you how good this timeline if Godzilla was. Saddest Godzilla movie period. It would be perfect to see something similar done in legendary. The last movie as our king of the monsters fights a creature born from man's foolishness. But in the end, he wins, but at the cost of his own life. The world left in ruins due to monsters fight. Earth may never recover either. But they still mourn his death.
This scene's theme stirred in my head when I heard about Haruo Nakajima, the original Godzilla suit actor's death, and it made me break down. That's how powerful this scene was to be resonant with loss of a legendary actor.
@@nexuss13 They were trying to cool him down so he wouldn't destroy everything since he is a living/melting down nuclear reactor. Without freezing him, the entire city/planet would be ash.
I'm honestly still bummed that Toho decided against continuing the Heisei series with Junior, due to Zilla '98 being in production. It would've been awesome seeing Junior following in his father's footsteps and battling other kaiju to protect civilization, which would make sense since he was initially raised by humans in GvsMG2.
This scene now even hits harder, with the recent passing of Kenpachiro Satsuma. Thank you Mr. Satsuma, for have giving us a childhood that we couldn't have asked for. Rest in peace you legend, long live the king.
True so sad. Just watched it now. same as the kongs endings when he dropped of the tower saying "goodbye" to the ladies. But they always come back in another good version.
Don't worry this godzilla is actually a shin godzilla they thought it was godzilla but it wasn't the other godzilla wasn't around with shin godzilla but the other godzilla is 23 years old in 2023 he is still alive he is unstoppable he is still young and he is extremely powerful.
This scene was super sad to me, but in a "WOAH" sense. It then put tears in my eyes after I learned the significance of the music. Made by the Legend himself, the creator of the original theme. When he was given the task of making another musical masterpiece he was brought to an emotional point on the inside, because he felt the music he was composing felt like he was composing funeral music for his own son. His baby boy which he helped raise was dying, and ironically enough Godzilla had lost his own son in the very movie the music would be composed for. Not to mention the final cries out from Godzilla is like he is crying out for his boy, or something more heart wrenching, Godzilla giving up his life by exerting energy to explode his heart to try and save his boy before all the radiation runs out. This will always send me on an emotional/thought filled trip over those things.
It's even more significant that that. Requiem was the very last musical piece that Ifukube ever composed for Godzilla, and one of the last pieces he ever composed before he passed away.
I’m a very hardy person. I hardly get emotional over anything. But I’ll admit this made me tear up a bit. The confusion and fear on Godzilla’s face when they start shooting him and the pain in his roar as he slowly melts away combined with the music got to me. Goes to show how amazingly executed this was
Good news!!! Those were cyro weapons, they were tying to save him and cool him down! I'm not sure why they waited so long though.... I'm guessing the hotter he got the more powerful he was, but they had to keep him cool enough to not go nukeywukey
They were firing at him with freeze lasers and missiles to try and mitigate the damage from the meltdown. He was frozen once earlier in the movie and it just delayed the inevitable….Godzillas death.
One of the hardest cries I’ve had as a kid. Still makes me tear up. Then the haunting rebirth of the son of Godzilla to tie things completely together. Such utterly well-done cinematography. I am still left in awe every time I watch.
It’s quite painful and emotional seeing Gojira in mental and physical pain. The loss of his adopted son that he spent the entire movie to search for only to have him ripped in half and die to the hands of Destoroyah, and the pain of literally melting because of something he could not have controlled. Wait I just died in 1954 and now my son who was on fire had a meltdown and his son just turned into an adult? My family is confusing but also sad that my son died cuz of meltdown :(
I remember reading a comment somewhere that hits the feels more. When Jr. is revived and roaring, he was actually calling out to his dad but of course, no response… I’m like damn, as if the ending wasn’t enough of a gut punch.
@@genociderex93imperator84 I don't think so. While not canon, the Godzilla vs Gigan Rex short implies that Junior dissapeared after GvD, and came back to fight for the Earth again 25 years later. It makes sense since Junior was a less agressive, more calm and reasonable version of his old man
I decided to revisit Godzilla vs Destoroyah and it was such a beautiful film, Godzilla's meltdown always get's me in the feels due to us of course knowing this Godzilla for so long. I loved the growling before He started to melt completely it sounded as if He was crying or just struggling to even breathe, and the roar was just so upsetting to listen to. Godzilla in this scene wasn't Angry, or triumphant, He lost the only thing He cared about and soon his own life, and all He could do as He started to melt was just sob, He never moved an inch while in meltdown. Like another comment stated the pain of loosing Jr was more painful than the meltdown Godzilla was experiencing. And I loved the calls from Jr, they sounded as if He was calling out to Godzilla, and to of course no response. And of course this was Akira Ifukube's last Godzilla film, this was more a less a farewell to both Godzilla and Ifukube himself. His Track "Requiem" hit me so hard during Godzilla's death. Bravo to everyone who worked not just on this film but the entirety of the Heisei series. And special thanks to Kochi Kawakita for His hard work making all those special effects to make Meltdown not only look so good, but make it look so real and painful.
@@jarrodskufcagaming5203 I said as if, not He was. I did know that the director said this scene was trying to show him crying but when I first viewed it I did think it was him struggling to breathe and or crying, the ladder of which being correct. Non the less thank you for letting me know
Long live the king, even though I never fully seen this movie, I can tell that Godzilla was in a lot of pain and seeing him in his final moments really is heartbreaking.
4:28 A new begines... To new era........ Millenium.................................... A new gojira births A soul for another soul........ "Most epic gojira roar"
@Sandra Chudziak but Junior didn’t stay dead for long. As the leftover radiation emitted from Godzilla’s meltdown was enough to resurrect Junior as an adult. Turning him into a new Godzilla ready for action. But the series would continually be rebooted dropping him all together.
@@tyrannosaurusrex3629 Oh that one. I heard about that short. But I haven’t watched it yet. Also FinalGoji is not Junior. That’s just a fan theory that claims FinalGoji is Junior as an adult. But it was confirmed that FinalGoji is a completely different Godzilla and not the adult Junior we saw at the end of Godzilla Vs Destoroyah. So that theory was debunked. The same thing was brought up with Godzilla 2000. But that incarnation was also confirmed to be a completely new and different Godzilla.
The fact that this is such an old movie yet it still gave me tears in my eyes shows how good or sad they made Godzillas death and it takes a lot to make myself cry
@1:31, this scene is almost like an orchestra. The tanks are the instruments and Godzilla is the conductor conducting his final piece... Absolutely breathtaking
Rest in Peace to another Godzilla actor Kenpachiro Satsuma May 27 1947-December 16 2023. Thank you for all the times you made me laugh and scream for joy and cry for sadness and all the lessons you taught me about the importance of nature and our duty to keep her safe thank you for being Godzilla
Tony Stark: I have the saddest heroic death of any hero. Godzilla: Kid, I was an anti-hero for the majority of the 90s, and I still had a more sad heroic death than you ever will.
No matter how many times I watch this movie (I watch it like 80 times a year because it is my favorite Godzilla movie, as it was the one that introduced me to the series) this scene will always make me cry rivers…
When a film-maker makes you care about a monster dying, especially one that cannot speak our language, and is equally a threat as they can be a 'saviour'; you earned your right to call yourself one of the best. The production and film crew of the Heisei Era Godzilla films not only brought Godzilla back after a long hiatus, but in my opinion, brought us the best of the Big G since his original outing. I'm sure if Ishiro Honda had lived long enough to see this film, he would have approved of the way Godzilla was portrayed and went out.
I heard that a film maker confirmed that mv godzilla won't die, but if it has too.. mv could most likely continue with a godzilla Jr unlike heisei era.
@@-ThatGuy_ IIRC Toho had it in the rights agreement that legendary can't kill godzilla unless its either the last film of the mv or godzilla Jr is a thing. So they probably could introduce godzilla Jr in the 3rd film. Ahe him up over time and then kill the main godzilla
This is the saddest but also probably the most beautiful Godzilla scene, ever. The cherry on top is the wholesome ending where Godzillas death revived his son who he cared for deeply. The Hesei era was the best one in my opinion.
I watched this movie when I was 8 or 9 years old in my old TV. I've never cried so hard for a monster in all my life until I watched this scene. It's also one of the reasons why I grew loving the MonsterVerse

@@Igorgetyou95 He eventually turns on humanity, blaming them for his father's death, and a new war begins.

I don't think so.
While not canon, the Godzilla vs Gigan Rex short implies that Junior dissapeared after GvD, and came back to fight for the Earth again 25 years later.
It makes sense since Junior was a less agressive, more calm and reasonable version of his old man
RIP Satsuma-San. Thank you for making my childhood so memorable and awesome. You will always be MY Godzilla. ❤
I will agree with the fans this is the saddest Godzilla moment in history and will live on forever and ever

R.I.P. Kenpachiro Satsuma, who played Godzilla in this film, and in the six films before). We miss you!!!
And special thanks to Kochi Kawakita for His hard work making all those special effects to make Meltdown not only look so good, but make it look so real and painful.
no that is not the reason. he was crying because he lost his son. PERIOD. that is the truth and reason, PERIOD

I remember watching this and it was the saddest part of the Godzilla franchise and I had tears in my eyes, he still had a son to look after 🥺🥺🥺🥺
@Sandra Chudziak but Junior didn’t stay dead for long. As the leftover radiation emitted from Godzilla’s meltdown was enough to resurrect Junior as an adult. Turning him into a new Godzilla ready for action. But the series would continually be rebooted dropping him all together.

@@tyrannosaurusrex3629 What?
@@sammontanez6908 u know, the new short out from yesterday?
@@tyrannosaurusrex3629 Oh that one. I heard about that short. But I haven’t watched it yet. Also FinalGoji is not Junior. That’s just a fan theory that claims FinalGoji is Junior as an adult. But it was confirmed that FinalGoji is a completely different Godzilla and not the adult Junior we saw at the end of Godzilla Vs Destoroyah. So that theory was debunked. The same thing was brought up with Godzilla 2000. But that incarnation was also confirmed to be a completely new and different Godzilla.
After satsumas death, this scene hits harder than burning godzillas Atomic breath.

The fact that this is such an old movie yet it still gave me tears in my eyes shows how good or sad they made Godzillas death and it takes a lot to make myself cry

@@gekozilla7339 i feel like this would also help in introducing destoroyah or spacegodzilla as the final big bads of the monsterverse
This is the saddest but also probably the most beautiful Godzilla scene, ever. The cherry on top is the wholesome ending where Godzillas death revived his son who he cared for deeply. The Hesei era was the best one in my opinion.
