I absolutely adore the character Rocky! So much heart at the core of this film and a brilliant script that shows that it doesn't matter if you win or lose as long as you go the distance. Beautiful! Enjoy :)

This movie was a phenomenon with lines around the block waiting to see it. Every boy in town was in awe of Rocky and his poster was in every kids room.
Rocky and Adrian. Yes, it is a love story. Rocky loves Adrian. He wears his heart on his sleeve and that's what endears everyone to him.
For all the bravado and testosterone in this movie, Rocky is really the antithesis of all that. He's gentle, kind, sensitive, loving, full of heart, and still every bit a man, actually more of a man, as any. For all of his muscle, he uses his strength to help people, take care of people, and watch out for them. He's forgiving even to those that hurt him and carries no hate or malice in his heart.
He's emotional. He has fears. He has doubts about himself. It's OK to feel those things. He went the distance and that was as important as winning.
All of the messages in this movie are positive. It's interesting that it's all done within the context of boxing and a brutal boxing match.

Glad you left in, "...never talked to no door before." This movie is full of really inventive lines that display Rocky's simplistic mind, which makes him endearing. For example, when asked about where he came up with the name, Italian Stallion, he says, "I made that up when I was eating dinner." Please keep going. The whole series is worth watching.

In fairness to Mickey, he can't invest in every fighter in the gym, and Rocky was never invested enough in the sport to cause Mickey to take him seriously. Rocky smoked, broke people's legs, and was out of breath in the first round with Spider Rico. That's why he lost his locker -- Rocky wasn't even trying.

When Sylvester Stallone first wrote this, he gave it to his friend, Henry Winkler (who later played "The Fonz" on the sitcom Happy Days). Henry was friends with a network/movie producer. The producer loved the story, and bought it instantly. When Sylvester found out it was purchased, but, the producer wanted someone "else" to play the part of Rocky, Sylvester said absolutely not. He demanded his script back and returned the money. Luckily for him, the producer agreed. Sylvester then went on to get the movie made with him as the lead. They shot the entire film in only 28 days. The rest, as they say, is history. 😮🥊

Also because this movie was so very low budget at the time, the director and producers enlisted the help of Lloyd Kaufman (of the independent Troma films & of Toxic Avenger fame) who allowed them to use his filming cameras and movie equipment for the shoot in Philadelphia (and he even has a small cameo in the film as the drunk that Rocky picks up & brings into the bar).

One of my all-time favorite movies. It is easy to hate Pauly but he really has a hard time with his drinking and his feeling of resentment towards Adrian. It is never really said how long they have been living together but I think most people feel their parents have been gone for awhile and Adrian and Pauly have been living together for quite a few years, each of them not really have any relationships with others, depending only on the other for support. I think Pauly really struggles with loosing Adrian to Rocky and then thinking that he will be left alone because he knows without his sister he would probably be laying in some alley, she really helps to keep him somewhat on the right track and moving forward.

Rocky II is the second part of this story, and my personal favourite. Tonally it is very similar, and it was the first Rocky film directed by Stallone (he directed 4 of them). The stakes are higher, the dramatic twists are heart wrenching, and the climax is breathtaking. I think I promote Rocky II under just about Rocky reaction. Please ignore any suggestions to skip Rocky 5, you will regret it and end up going back to it just to see what you missed during Rocky's journey. If you skip then you'll get to Rocky Balboa (Rocky 6) in a confused state because so much happened in Rocky's life between Rocky 4 and Balboa. The Creed movies musn't be skipped either because even though he's not the main star, they're still a continuation and an update of the Rocky story. ✌

The scene about the giant Rocky poster being wrong was adlibbed.
The poster WAS wrong but they couldn't change it because of budget and time, so they created a scene that would explain the error.
This movie created the *training montage* and the song "gonna fly now" was created by the composer's wife and performed by her and her local choir.
This was the second sports related movie Stallone wrote. The first was "Paradise Alley". It was about a up and coming wrestler, trying to make it big.
Studios rejected the idea. Stallone went home, sat at his typewriter and said to himself "If not a wrestler... How about a boxer?"

You see it when a fight ends, both fighters collapse the moment the adrenaline wears off. The worst part is, it's and addictive state of being, once you get used to fighting. Being so keyed into the present, the current moment, is a truly addicting thing. You never feel more alive than during that time.

This is why you get the iconic shots of running up the stairs and feeling you are in the fight at the end. Before Rocky cameras had to be mounted on a rail system or a vehicle as they were so big. When you watch any sporting event today and you see those zip line cameras or small cameras that is the camera man from Rocky's company.

It's worth throwing on a poll in the future. He plays a "normal guy" who's Sheriff of a small NJ town populated largely by NYPD-employed residents and the challenges that situation creates. Also you get to see DeNiro yell "YOU BLEEEWWWWWWW IT!!" which is what we all wanted, whether we knew it or not.

So funny that youve never heard of the meat punching. Alot of movies and tv shows have imitated rockys workout montage especially the hitting the side of beef and raising his hands when he makes up to the top of the stairs

It's a classic American underdog story, as Stallone intended it to be. Considering our history we're especially receptive towards characters who are looked down upon as weaker and lesser-than by others, only to rise up to the top through nothing but sheer determination and hard work. Facing danger without a second thought, and not giving one second towards thinking about surrender. I love Stallone and his films 🇺🇸

The 4 Main Characters of Rocky are 4 people who never had a chance at life getting that chance on a random quirk of fate, Paulie is a trash person because he's literally never had a chance at life, raising Adrian, working a shit paying job, never ends up getting married Paulie resents the world and his friends because he feels trapped.

The rocky movies are indescribable. my favorite part is part 4. i love drago!!! To this day he is one of the baddest guys ever. purely optical. his face, his body, his hairstyle..... a total work of art. no I am not gay. absolutely not. but is just a fact that he was brutally handsome. Even Stallone said in an interview that he thought he couldn't see properly when he first saw dolph.

      SPOILER WARNING FOR ROCKY 4:
Its also quite a feat that Dolph Lundgren was so menacing that they managed to make the audience believe that Rocky, the heavyweight champion of the world, was the underdog against Drago who only had ONE professional fight. He was undefeated as an amateur, but his only professional fight was against an aging Creed who hadnt boxed in 5 years.

I know this is usually the only thing people associate our city with but there are much worse things to be known for. It think we sometimes forget he’s not real🤣. Though anytime Stallone was in town filming he would answer to the name Rocky when a passerby would say hello ie “Yo Rock” “hey how ya doin” he’s a real good dude✊

  • @TrackMaster844

24:06 - That was a legit behind the scenes error on the production side, getting the wrong colors on the poster. But the movie was so low budget they couldn’t afford another, so they made it part of the plot, with Rocky brought lower mentally before the match with a visible representation of nobody caring or giving him a chance.
